I think my joey is oop?

I think my joey is oop? - 05/07/11 02:38 AM

Okay, So I've had Mama in the bonding pouch the majority of the day and at 9:37 pm I decided to check on her again and she was half laying on her back and the joey was basically all the way out. The pouch was pretty opened up there is another joey that is farther back in the pouch anyway the joey that was mostly out was turned on its side and it didnt appear to be attached to anything. But, as soon as I noticed this it started climbing back in. So, do you think he/she is offically detached?

Oh and she has been sleeping on her back with her nose tucked in her pouch holding the sides of her belly. Is she just being protective of them ( she is getting used to me but still has her crabby moments) ? Or is she just cuddleing them?

Re: I think my joey is oop? - 05/07/11 03:03 AM

Probably some of both.

I don't count the OOP day until mom is outside eating and such without them. Meaning they are left in sleeping pouch with dad.

Okay update! One Joey was fully detach from mommy today.I held him for two seconds so cute! I went to open the cage and mama leaped out near the door smelling me like what in the world do you think your going with my baby! I handed the baby back to Daddy and he started grooming the joey and mommy quickly followed and the baby reattached to mommy and started suckling. After the joey was back suckling they quickly just went back to sleep.I was wondering once I am able to weigh the joey (which may be tonight if they are not attached while Mama is eating) what is a healthy weight for them to be at at this point? They do seem very tiny to me but they are growing more and more hair daily. They no longer have that "pinky" look to them.

Re: I think my joey is oop? - 05/11/11 07:10 PM

I have pics of them nursing on Mama that I can post but I havent taken pics of just them yet. I need to put my camera by my scale and have everything prepared! Mama and Daddy are very protective and I don't wanna hold baby to long and have them stress out. But, I will be taking pics of them asap! But, anyway posting pictures of here is a little confusing could you explain it to me so I can post pics?

Re: I think my joey is oop? - 05/11/11 07:15 PM

Sure I can. smile

Don't stress them out, take pics when the time is ready. thumb

Your first option is as an attachment: click on "Switch to Full Reply Screen" , below the post box, click "File Manager", click browser to search your computer for the picture you want to upload. Select the photo, click "add file" ,click "done adding files" and upload your photo. thumb

It only accepts small size pictures, you will more than likely need to re-size the pictures. For resizing you can use www.cranno.com

Another option is to upload your photos to www.photobucket.com, then post the link to your pictures.

Hope this helped. thumb

Re: I think my joey is oop? - 05/14/11 02:17 AM

Okay I have a question. Georgia(Mama) "sings" to her babies like 2-3 times a day is this normal? I check on them everytime I hear anything sometimes the babies will be trying to get in her pouch to nurse and she will start the "singing" and it seems like shes trying to shake them off her. Is this okay? Or is she irritated by them?

Re: I think my joey is oop? - 05/15/11 08:28 AM

This is perfectly normal, momma will rock the babies while she sings to them, just like we do. thumb

Re: I think my joey is oop? - 05/16/11 04:15 AM

Okay, Thanks I figured this I just wanted to make sure. So, as of right now the joeys are in the pouch and the parents have been away from the joeys a good 30-45 minutes. Eating and playing in there cage.I've lowered the nesting area to the floor of the cage and the Dad just keeps going behind the pouch but the babies are inside.Ive seen the mother just stick her head in the pouch and go off to playing again. The Joeys havent cried at all.Is this along time for them to not feed on there mother they are only like 4 days oop?

Re: I think my joey is oop? - 05/16/11 05:17 AM

Im making a new post in hopes I'll get a quicker reply? The parent gliders I have left both of their joeys in there sleeping nest for almost two hours.I took both of the joeys out and did the tent test and it took quite a few seconds for the skin to go back down. I tried my best to give them some pedilyte but only one was really interested. The other was trying to squirm his way out of the "burrito" he was in.They were both warm when I took them out of the cage.I just put them back and finally Mom went into the pouch and one joey went into her pouch and she hopped out of the nesting area with one joey but not the other. Then after a minute she went back into the nesting area and she still remains there along with the father.Id like to open up the cage and make sure both are nursing but she seems to get nervous or stressed out and jumps out of the nesting area away from me.Does anyone have any advice? Im assuming they should stay with her aslong as they are nursing? If they are nursing will it be enough to get them hydrated?

Re: I think my joey is oop? - 05/16/11 05:28 AM

With newly oop joeys, their skin can be pretty loose and appear to be dehydration. Check the joeys belly and see if you can see a white spot just off to the right of center down near their pouch/pom. That is their stomach and if it is white, it means they have milk in their tummy.

New joeys will nurse almost all day so if they don't nurse as often at night, they will still be getting what they need. It is best to check for the white spot after you have seen them nursing.

Also, weighing them at the same time every day will let you know if they are gaining weight. Use a scale that weighs in grams. They should gain a little (maybe only one gram) a day or STAY the same weight. Any weight loss could be an indication that mom isn't producing enough milk.

At this stage, I would not give pedialyte to them. If they fill up on it, they won't have room for mom's milk.

Re: I think my joey is oop? - 05/16/11 05:34 AM

Yeah my little boy wouldn't even take it my girl had a few drops and that was it thanks for replying. Im feeling a little more relieved!I have weighed a few times and everytime they had seemed to gain a little.I did try to check that area in the tummy I didn't see anything but at the moment that I know of one is nursing for sure.I'm going to be sure to weigh them daily without a doubt and check tummys for milk. I could have been wrong when checking if there was milk I wasnt really sure what to look for but I know now thank you again sooooo much!

Re: I think my joey is oop? - 05/16/11 05:59 AM

No problem. I know it is hard, especially with the first joeys, but try to relax a little and just enjoy the little furballs.

While mom and dad are out of the pouch is a great time for you to "steal" them and get photos to share with us! They grow and change so much in the first 8 weeks. (hint hint!)

Re: I think my joey is oop? - 05/16/11 06:26 AM

Oh thats music to my ears! They both just brighten my day. I was holding both of them two days ago for a short period of time and for the first few seconds they were really squirmy and climbing all over each and then I swear they were laying in the palm of my hand and both wrapped eachothers arms around one another. It was like they were hugging!I wish I could have gotten a photo of that! Then I put them back in with Mom and Dad and they started nursing. They seem to be doing well I guess I just panick easily lol. I'll try my best to just relax and enjoy everyone.
