Citrus should be fed sparingly.

Lima Beans are only toxic if they aren't cooked.

Grapes....that's debatable.

Broccoli may cause gas but I have not heard of it being harmful.

Cinnamon....why cinnamon?

Bandit loves grapes! I haven't heard anything bad about them, though.....have you?

Cinnamon.....I've heard it's kind of strong for them. I could very well be wrong! :-)

my gliders love anything with cinnamon and cinnamon is believed to be good for balancing blood sugar so there isnt that peak and low thing going on. I wouldnt give it to them straight, but mixed in with foods...

grapes are debatable as mentioned.

as is catfood. not all catfood is bad as a treat, depends on the brand

add cherimoya yummmmmm

I'm curious why grapes are debatable? Bandit doesn't get them daily, but he does love them as a treat. But, if they are going to hurt him, I don't want to feed them! Thanks for the info on cinnamon...I suppose just like anything else, using it sparingly or mixed in wouldn't hurt.

I've read that report and many others. But I feed grapes to my gliders. I have for the whole time I've had them. (Over 11 years). My oldest glider is over 13 now and his mate is over 11.

We all have to make our own decisions based on what we research and what we observe. I choose to continue feeding grapes and have yet to see one single incident or bit of proof that grapes will harm gliders. Other animals, yes, but not gliders.

Yeah I dont think grapes would be dangerous, as long as you wash them off like any other fruit. No telling what the farmers spray on them to help keep bugs and stuff away. But it seems like a lot of people have always fed grapes and their gliders are fine and healthy.

I haven't had gliders as long as Dancing, but have fed them grapes for 2 yrs. now with no ill effects. They don't get them often but they do love them when I offer them as treats and I do mix up fruit salad, especially in the summer and it has red & green grapes. My bearded dragons love them too!

I generally give mine grapes as a little treat when he's in his pouch during the day to keep him hydrated. Occasionally, he'll get them with dinner in the evenings, but most times not. Thanks for all the thoughts...I agree that it's a "to each his own" thing...

Hi,

I am new to gliders, but here in the UK we are recomended to feed our gliders a few pieces of Iams dried cat food. why do you think cat food would be bad for a glider?

The "Iams" cat food here in the states is NOT the same as the "Iams" cat food you have in the UK. Your's is much higher quality. I do know that many in the UK offer a few peices of catfood as PART of the diet.

I also know that it isn't often suggested to feed catfood because there are those that are LAZY and will believe that they can feed nothing but catfood and expect their gliders to be healthy.

One of the concerns with cat food is ash content. Though I have to be honest and say, I have no idea what the concern is. I haven't researched it. Another is the belief that hard dry foods can cause mouth abcesses (from scratching the gums) but I tend to not believe that either. While it CAN happen, I don't think that hard food is the most common reason for the mouth abcesses.

I just don't feed cat food simply because gliders are not cats.

I listed my source for grapes. So if you have sources for the other questionable foods please post them. A good anti-catfood article would be great. In that safe food list there are a lot of the things i mentioned that can upset stomachs. Honestly i think if there are so many choices for our gliders i'd go with the ones that don't cause them discomfort.

Would grapefruit also cause an upset stomach for them?

I've heard Tomatoes can cause stomach lining issues has anyone else heard about this?

ok, my turn, lol. I've been told NOT to use Globe grapes. I feed regular red grapes & can understand the seeds in the Globe Grapes but why else is it considered bad for gliders??

I'd like to know a definite about the cinnamon. There is a no & there is a yes so that does not help.

I have seen on the safe fruit list that cherry tomatoes are safe dunno? Tomatoes themselves, i've heard nothing so i'm curious as well.

Sunflower seeds and pine nuts (natural, unsalted) are ok in moderation. Mine LOVE them. Like I said, in moderation.

This is good & this thread is helping me to form a new list to add to my info I have at our TGI glider booth.

Please keep adding the Safe & Not Safe Fruits & Veggies.

Plus anymore Moderation type foods will help the list as well.

The only problem I have with tomatos are getting the seeds off the walls after they get done with their food fight. I am always amazed to find how high and how far they can fling tomato seeds!

I do feed grapes occasionally as they are a nice traveling treat for a bra baby to keep them content.
I also use catfood as a treat as well. I use only high quality food that has no grains and no preservatives. I also try to use foods with no meat byproducts. honestly I would rather just give them regular chicken, but the catfood makes a nice treat. I also do not believe that it contributes to abscesses.
when developing my cookie recipe I did research on the effects of cinnamon on animals (already knew for people) and found little if any. so I came on here and asked (this was forever ago)and many members stated hey have fed cinnamon mixed in foods with no ill affects. I have been also for almost 2 years and no issues. I make a nectar for them that I add a tiny bit to and they seem to like it.
tomatoes...have fed once in a while.
foods to add to list

dragon fruit
honey plums
how about dandelion flowers?

roflmao Too funny Teresa! I know mine are bad with flinging food but just like Aimee said, i'll have to try it to see where they get! I have to re-paint my walls anyway from them so might as well let them have their fun for now & more work for me scrubbing! lol

There is a link on that page if anyone wishes to contact me to have a food added to my list. If you do contact me with a food item, please also explain why you believe the food to be unsafe (and a link to any info you have about it). I know I need to add uncooked lima beans to the list. The list that i have is kind of a compilation of information I found online. It is by no means exhaustive. I am happy to update it as needed though & it would be helpful to me if the requests come through my website or my email, rather than a forum topic. I can keep track of the requests a little better that way & I don't always get on the forum as often as I'd like.

As was posted earlier, my safe foods list is here:
http://www.sweet-sugar-gliders.com/safe-fruits-and-vegetables.html

Tomatoes are safe but I think moderation is probably good there. Aren't they acidic? I don't eat tomatoes, so I'm no expert on that. With the foods that can upset their stomachs, moderation is good. Oranges, for example, are very healthy. Too much can cause diarrhea though. Sure you can choose to not feed it. But you could also choose to feed a little to provide them with vitamin C, etc, and just know not to feed too much.

Grapes have been linked to kidney failure. I saw someone said it was something with the skin. If that is the case (I'm not an expert, so I haven't researched it much myself), then the gliders are probably pretty safe from it because they don't eat the skin. I posted them as a controversial item on my website because there are some possible risks & I felt it good to just put it out there. People can make their own decisions about them & do their own research if they want. Again, nearly anything (except for the toxic foods) in moderation is probably ok. Corn, for example, has no nutritional value. But feeding it in moderation is ok...if you want to feed it, just use it as a treat (or a small portion of their diet)rather than a main component. As the others said, cat food is the same way....it shouldn't be their main diet, but a high-quality food with good ingredients is probably fine as an occasional treat.

Our suggie likes grapes, also, but I don't give them as a treat as much as I used to based on what I have read here. "everything in moderation" I guess! Love this forum and appreciate all the wonderful info

Yep...I carry grapes with me in case we're out for an extended period of time and my babies need a drink. It's good for hydration. Other than that, and an occasional snack when they're out running around, that's it. Bok Choy is in the relish recipe I use - they like it!
