Rose has had diarrhea since 8/5. She has 3-3 week OOP joeys. She saw our vet yesterday and the float came back negative for any parasites. Her belly felt normal and her lungs were clear. She is not dehydrated, is acting as fiesty as ever, keeps herself groomed, and is a good mom to the joeys. She is eating well, but has developed a passion for frozen carrots, where she never liked them before. The vet looked at the joeys (as I do every day, several times a day) and they are not dehydrated either. They are gaining wight every day, but still comparatively small. These are her first joeys, she is 1 yr and 4 months old. She is on the BML diet. Her cage mate & mother, Delta, has soft, bulky stool, but formed, and M.J.'s(dad) is normal. The other strange behavior is that both her cagemates were found at different times during the day yesterday sleeping alone outside the pouch, which is really weird! She still has the diarrhea today, and I'm thinking if it's not parasites, maybe a bacterial infection, but no evidence of one by exam. Maybe there was a bad piece of food in the frozen veggies that did it. All of them(13) were at the SGGA and she and Delta seem to be the only ones ill, with Rose being worse. We also spent a week in Nevada, MO. I really am not sure what's going on, but could use some brainstorming.

I thought about that, but the stress ended two days before onset. She seemed VERY happy to be in familiar surroundings. Thanks, and I guess its still a possibility. Ayone else?

It could be that the additional joey is taxing her system to some extent. It is hard for a mom to get her required nutrients with two joeys, much less three. Many breeders recommend supplementing mom with marsupial milk replacer, in this case with the additional joey, it would seem to be an even better idea. Normally I just increase the amount of BML for mom, so you could try that as well. As long as she is not dehydrated and comes up clean for fecals, it sounds more like a lack of nutrition (due to everything going to the joeys)then parasite/illness.

I am already supplementing the joey's twice a day with BML and put extra in for Mom. Their dish always has some left, and she has both Papa & G'ma to babysit while she eats and plays, plus the time I have them out. Her activity level when she gets a break is frenetic!

Hmmm, then maybe it was just a bad veggie or something If it doesn't clear up in a day or so, I'd probably have fecals run again just to be sure. Just keep checking in the mean time to make sure that she doesn't become dehydrated due to the loose stools.

Shot in the dark Linda, but what about the water? Did you use bottled water, or use the various waters provided at the visits? Just a thought.

I used local water from the tap. If it was the water I would think it would have affected all of them. But you know what...I'm such an airhead! I've been doing more thinking about the stress angle and it hit me! (duh) Why was I trying to find a home for Marvin's family group in the first place: because having the two family groups in the same room was causing both groups to behave differently, not only with aggression towards each other, but more nips and bites to me as well!!! Of course she was happy to be back in familiar surroundings, until she figured out she was sharing with them again! I had said in my post it started escalating while she was carrying the joey's, to the point that I felt they would be better in a new home....why didn't I remember that! First light tomorrow I make drastic changes in their housing and get the two groups on completely different floors. I think the temporary stress will be mitigated by Rose not feeling she or the joeys are threatened. I couldn't see the forest for the trees! I'll let everyone know if it works....Thanks for your help!
BTW: I 'm not so sure now about finding a new(better) home for them is the right thing, or even the best thing for them. Having second thoughts about how stressfull THAT would be for them, even once the joeys are old enough.

Getting purified or distilled water is a good idea. Howqever, one of my gliders had diarhea after her joeys came OOP for a while, and the vet said is sometimes happens.

Have the vet do another stool check. Cytology report will determine wither or not it is a bacterial problem. A stain sol is used to see the bacterial and also helps determine wither or not it is gram positive or negative. Stress often leads to an overgrowth of bacteria that normally would not affect a healthy glider.

Linda, I like Judie's suggestion about another test -- Diarrhea lasting this long doesn't sound like a temporary stress problem, but something more systemic. I know it sometimes takes more than one fecal in the case of parasites, and the tests Judie mentioned can be necessary for the right diagnosis. Remember what Dr. Bradley said at the Getaway about making sure you do the tests to ensure treating the right problem? And the added stress of the triplets could make her more susceptible. The fact that two of them seem affected make it even more important for a re-test.

I wish this were Monday...I will be taking stool samples for testing first thing in the morning. I spent the day Sat. separating the two glider families, and by evening Delta's were soupy, Rose's were looking formed but with a large ring of water around, and two of the glider's in Grumpy's family are now affected, one soft but formed, the other soupy. I have to stop this. I don't think it's the stress or the water, now, it's got to be contagious. No one as yet, including Rose, is acting the least bit 'off' nor is she 'tenting'. After 6 days of vaious stages of this I would think she would be. With a supplement of BML every day, usyally morning and evening, the joys are growing faster than ever! I'm stumped.
I'll let you know the results when I get them back.

Try looking up 'Distilled Water' with the Search option. I found THIS in Best of the Board.

Dawn seems better, more formed with less water ring, Delta has gone from pasty back to soft formed. I think they are getting better. My exotic vet is on vacation but back tomorrow. I talked to the other vet and her take is that it was probably a virus, but she will definately have Dr. S call me tomorrow about running more fecal tests. The joeys are still growing, and loving the BML suppliments. None are dehydrated. Two gliders in Grumpys family have it now, so I'm hoping they will be alright, too. I'm hawk lady right now, watching them. I'm going to open a new post to see if anyone else, breeders, etc., have had anything like this go through their gliders. It is hard because mine are colony gliders. The risk of spreading a disease is higher, but the tradeoff is that they are not inclined to be sick at all. This is the first time this has happened.
