That's a huge relief Sheila, thanks for posting! I was worried about Milky Way and his babies(and grandbabies! His babies didn't waste any time! lol!). Phew! Honestly, I don't think that Leda's problems are something genetic(and neither does the vet). I think it's caused from something either dietary or environmental, or a combination of both. Especially since the other 2 gliders that showed signs of being sick are not related to her.

I thought something was sent to Dr. Tristen but I was not sure. Haleys liver was supposed to be sent to Tim, however, it never was. So there was no test done on the liver. Haley did show as a healthy glider during her necropsy. I am almost positive this is not a genetic issue that Nicole is dealing with.

Bridget, Peggy is in her car, so I am copying and pasting what Dr Tristan answered to these questions. With doing blood work on gliders, should there be a fasting period?
Does the calcium and phosphorus levels remain stable or go up and down in the blood?
Such as, a diabetic. Blood sugar can go up or down in minutes, hours, it changes constantly whether a person has diabetes or not. With a diabetic, when the blood sugar is out of control, ALL of the organs start to suffer which in a matter of time (days, week) the blood work will show just about everything is imbalanced. Liver shows toxicity, kidneys show protein and ketones, heart rate changes and can mimic arithmia, heart murmur and even heart attack.
How long does it take for calcium in a glider to go up or down?
In humans, it can change rapidly depending on infection, excersize, DEhydration or any other illness.
We need to know more answers as to how this works before the actual diets themselves can come into play. With doing blood work on gliders, should there be a fasting period? No, not at this time. We have not found any parameters....yet......that are affected by fasting, but I am sure there are some.Does the calcium and phosphorus levels remain stable or go up and down in the blood? They remain stable over a days, changes occur over longer periods of time due to chronic disease...ie metabolic bone disease, dietary calcium deficeincy, 3 weeks after a dog has had pups, etc.Such as, a diabetic. I have some possibly good news! I vet called the lab and they said it's POSSIBLE that there's an "error" in the lab work. Not really an error...let me explain... With dogs/cats they spin the blood before testing it. However, because glider blood samples are so tiny, they can't spin them at the lab. When blood isn't spun the phosphorous in the blood cells can leak out. In a dog/cat it's not that big of a deal, but the lab said that it might be a bigger deal with gliders. Sooo...we're taking in Carmine on Wednesday. The vet wants a big glider that isn't too "fluffy", so he's the perfect candidate, lol. They're going to spin the blood at the vet's office before sending it to the lab. That way, hopefully, we can get some more accurate results. Anyways... Please keep your fingers and toes crossed that this is all just because of blood not being spun! It would be SUCH a huge relief!

Carmine got his blood drawn today. I guess the vet was able to get more blood then she expected because I looked at the bill when I picked him up at it showed multiple different tests being run(kidney, creatinine, BUN, calcium, phosphorous...there was another one, but I can't remember it off-hand...it was 4 letters and started with an A. :\). Hopefully the test brings back good news! If so, then we'll be re-testing some of the other gliders. Off-topic: if it turns out that the phos levels were due to the blood not being spun, do you think it'd be rude of me to ask for some type of refund/credit from the vet or lab? I mean, isn't an error like that something that the vet or lab should have mentioned?! Look at the chaos it's caused!

looking forward to seeing results and YES you should ask your vet for credit back on that test.. it was their fault.

Well...good news and bad news... GOOD NEWS: Carmine's phos levels were lower then the other gliders. BAD NEWS: They were still pretty high. :\ His calcium level was 8(a tiny bit high) and his phos level was 10.8(still way too high). I've had all the gliders on a new diet for a little over a week now, so that may have been why the phos levels are lower. Either that or because they spun the blood. We're not sure. The vet wants to re-test the gliders once they've been on the new diet for a month. Oh yeah, and all his other blood levels were normal and his kidney test was all normal as well. So, the vet still thinks that the gliders' high phos levels are diet-related. *Has anyone else using HPW been able to get bloodwork done yet? I'm curious if anyone else's gliders have high phos/low cal.

Well, Carmine hadn't previously been tested, so we don't know if his levels are down or if his just weren't as high as the others... I wanted to bring back one of the gliders that had already been tested, but the vet needed a bigger glider so she could get enough blood to be able to spin it. :\ So, rather then test more, she wants to give them more time on a different diet and then retest them in a month. I don't like waiting though. I'm crossing my fingers and toes that the diet change is what helped because that would be such a relief to finally have this all over with. *sigh* 1 good sign is that Leda started showing marked improvement within less then a week of being on the new diet and now she's SOOOOO much better! She's walking way better, cleaning her plate, and has put on some weight(I keep forgetting to weigh her! I'll try and remember to weigh her before going to bed...).

I just wanted to post an update and say that for the first time in I-can't-remember-how-long Leda is playing in the wheel with her daughter!!! She's walking normal, acting normal, cleaning her plate, and, from the look of it, she's all better! I'm so stinking happy right now! I don't know WHAT worked, but whatever it was, I'm happy and Leda's happy! Now to just get to the root of whatever has caused all this darn trouble to begin with! ARGH!

Well, out of curiosity, I weighed Leda... She's 82g!!! When she first got sick she was just 69g. Her normal weight is 80-85g, so she's back in her normal weight range.

Thanks for asking. Everyone is doing GREAT! I had one glider get pneumonia a couple weeks ago cause I was having issues keeping the glider rooms at a stable temp, but another room heater and some antibiotics fixed him right up. Leda's back to her normal silly self, Precious is all healed(AND has lost some of her "baby fat" on the new diet and is looking sleek and beautiful!), no more "seizures"(or whatever they were), or any other things out of the norm. I'm hoping to get some of the bloodtests redone by next week to confirm that everything's as good on the inside as it is on the outside, so I'll be sure to post the results once I have em. Keep your fingers and toes crossed! Oh yeah, and all my mommies/mommies-to-be are doing AWESOME! No more losses, thank God!
