a couple of weeks ago my glider lost part of her tail and i took her to the vet and the vet said the tail was healed but put her on metronidazde 250mg for a parasite in her stool... well all was fine and she never touched her tail at all how come now i noticed this morning she is taking the fur off at the end of her tail and i also noticed a black spot on her tail gangreen i guess .. i am calling the vet now and i am printing the instructions for a e-collar .. but why if everything was ok and the tail was healed would she start doing this now??? is she unhappy?? she was shy when i first got her but she has bonded with me now she is my snuggly bunny is she trying to tell me something?? please help

Usually when there is a black area on an injured gliders tail it is a sign of gangreen or poor blood circulation. The vet should amputate the tail back to where there is healthy flesh. Amputate in the same manner a dogs tail would be docked. Remove at a joint and be sure and leave enough skin to overlap the end. You may have to use an ecollar to prevent her from chewing on it. Some have found that slipping a short piece of an oversize plastic straw over the end of the tail will prevent the glider from chewing on it. You will need to secure it with self adhesive stretch gauze.

If there was a spot on her tail that didn't heal properly and died off she was probably trying to remove the part that hurt or was still damaged. It doesn't mean that she's unhappy, she just knows that something isn't right with her tail & that's the only way she knows how to fix it.....by removing what is causing the problem. As to why she's a snuggle bunny now, well, alot of times when a glider has gone through a traumatic experience, it brings them closer to their caregiver. The trust between you has been built up while you were nursing her and has created a strong bond.

i called the vet and the only one in town that treats sugar gliders is not in today they told me i can drop her off in the morning and they will take care of her... i will continue with the antibotics they gave me and keep a eye on her all day long and night today... i feel that right now there is nothing i can do but just watch her and give her meds and love on her until tomorrow morning... i feel also by looking at her tail the doc will have to amputate it a little then i will try the straw thing i think that may be better than the e- collar but i am buying today the stuff to make the e- collar just in case...
one question for charlie you mention stretch gauze to secure the straw would that be the same as when you give blood they put this gauze like material on your arm that stays put but also is easy to pull off without having glue like adhesive????

That is the type of tape Charlie is talking about. The important thing is to make sure she does no further damage. You will have to do what ever it takes (ecollar, straw, holding her) to prevent her from doing more damage.
It is very important that she be seen as if the tissue is necrotic (black, gangreen) it could turn septic and cause blood poisoning.

I went through one of my gliders having a tail amputation recently. He lost about 3 inches of his beautiful tail (still has about 4 or so). Make sure the vet gives you pain meds for her. If she is in pain, she will continue to attack and chew on her tail. With Sebastian, the straw alone was not enough to keep him from chewing his tail when he was in pain. With the pain meds. he would leave his tail alone.

Please keep us posted.

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance

i will keep you all posted on her tail... thanks for all the info... when i do the straw thing i should only cut a piece of straw just to go over and slightly beyond the wound then use the tape to secure it right??
now if the vet has to amputate part of her tail and stitch it up dont you want air to get to it so it can breath and heal faster?? did you do tent time and take to straw off for awhile?? i can see having it bandaged during the day while she is sleeping and at night while playing and while i am sleeping ... i have a feeling i am going to fight with her to put something on it to protect it and fight with her to keep it on ... is this the welcome to glider world??
oh and this time i will make sure she gives me pain med also ...
thanks everyone !!!

That is the reason I recommend both a collar and bandaging..so she can't chew off the bandages or do further damage, and the collar in combination keeps her from getting to it easily. Straws don't work with some gliders, and in some cases might hinder the healing process. I'd discuss it with the vet, as to whether he thinks bandaging or a straw would be beneficial more. And do not remove them even during playtime until fully healed...you'd be surprised at how silently and how fast they can cause more damage when they set their mind to it.

Here is what may be going on..in amputees (those who have lost a limb, or finger or toe) there are often nerve issues involved, and what they call "ghost pains". It actually feels like the limb is still there, and like it's itching or hurting, when in fact there is NOTHING there. My husband, who lost an index finger, suffers from this. That may be why she went after it. You might need to keep her on a low dose pain med for a few months..while those nerves have a chance to calm down and heal themselves, beyond the point to where the tissue is actually healed. Now, of course, you're going to have to treat the damage she caused. Go with your vet as to whether more needs to be removed. If the spot is very, very tiny, it may slough off on it's own..if not, more may need removed, or if it starts getting bigger (spreading to healthy tissue). I would ask for more antibiotics, and at least a couple months worth of painkiller (mild) to control any "ghost" symptoms she might be experiencing.

Keep us updated on your girl, and let us know what the vet has to say. You're doing a fine job so far.

WOW thank you Xfilefan i had'nt thought of the ghost pain.. it makes sense since she was doing sooo good after the time a piece of her tail came off and it healed so nice too... but now sad to say i think her tail will be a little shorter again... i just wondered and wracked my brain cause it made no sense to me if everything was good why she would do this now to her tail... god if i had thought of that i would of asked for pain med then to prevent this... Awwww i feel aweful but i am a new mommy to them and sad to say its live and learn... thanks i will make a e-collar tonight if i can figure how to make it from this site.. i have a cold and my head is in a fog so it makes it much harder to concentrate on things ... thats why also i dont want to spend too much time with her now at this time since i am sick.. i just hope she doesnt fight me too much with the collar and straw tomorrow i dont want her getting sick on top of what she is already going thru....
thanks again for all the info

You are very welcome! What I forgot to do earlier is, you can also call me if you need help...day or night (I keep odd hours). The number is 435-783-6097. Also, if she is housed with other gliders..separate her if you can, so they don't "help" take off the bandages, etc. Forgot to mention, too, that she'll have a hard time eating in the collar. She'll either need hand fed, or use the birdfeeders (pic will be attached)-you can get them at Wal Mart or most grocery stores, and they only cost a few dollars for a pair. I don't know what you feed, but things like babyfoods, BML, and Ensure are best for the feeders. Anything they can lick. Don't worry too much about your cold...you will need to interact with her a lot right now. You can tie something over your nose/mouth, or use the dust masks like in the hardware section of WalMart...that and making sure your hands are clean when handling her should be sufficient if you're worried about contagion. Again, call if you need help-or even support...I'm always around, and am more than happy to do what I can.

If she hasn't been in a collar before...if her nose starts to change color...like blue..it's too tight, and you'll need to try again until it will stay on, but she's getting enough air. It may take a few tries. She will likely fight it for 30 to 45 minutes before giving up (and periodically after that, tho not like at first). A blanket on the floor she can fight it out on works best..she'll give up when she realizes it's not coming off. As sad and heartbreaking as it is to watch, don't give in and give up...it's for her own good. You will also need to watch for signs of depression...spend as much time as you can with her to help that.

Also...what did the vet have to say?

Pic 2-put together. As you can see from the shape...the glider is able to feed itself, because the trough fits into the collar.

I just went through my littleoz chewing on her tail. The reason was because she had broke it-in two spots.
She tried chewing for a bit after i had it amputated but i just heldher until she went to sleep that first day.AFter she woke up I gave her pian meds and her antibiotics and she was fine. She was so mad at me because she wanted her wheel back LOL. I have been very fortunate it hasnot been bothering her.I too have an e-collar handy and some straws in case. Good luck today! If you need anything or have any questions feel free to ask!!

The waiting can be the hardest part . Let us know what the vet says. You're doing a good job..and are very observant to have caught what she was doing so quick! All my hopes with you and your little one!

sorry it took me so long to give you all a update but i have been watching her and making sure she is eating and drinking.. i picked her up from the vet and they had to amputate a piece of her tail and the vet put the e-collar on her ( thank god i didnt have to do it ) she was groggy when i got her but now she is alert and eating some and drinking and boy she is showing me in her own way she is mad at me biting me but also letting me hold her and pet her so i guess things could be worse...
i am leary on putting her in her big cage with her friend but i know she wants to see her too.. i think i will just have a sleepless night tonight and keep her in the small cage and maybe tomorrow i will put them in tent time in the morning when i give her the pain meds and see what the other glider will do and i guess base my decison on how they get along and if the other will touch her tail.. what do you all think??
we go back in a week for the stitches to come out so poor thing has to be in the collar until then .. she gave up trying to get out of it and she is climbing the cage pretty good with the collar on.. it just looks tight but i am afraid to take it off to double check then i wouldnt get the darn thing back on...
well let me know what you all think?? with the cage thing by keeping them seperated or put them together...
i would imagine if the vet put the collar on she would know how tight it should be huh??
i will keep you all posted...
thanks again

oh to me it looks like her nose may be a little blue but my husband doesnt think so but on the same hand her nose is pink but under her nose like by her upper lip would be that is a little blue her breathing is normal and like i said the vet put it on and yes this is the first time she is in a collar but she seems to be doing good with the collar on should i continue to keep it on and watch her or take it off and make my own and risk her getting out of the one i make??? what do i do and what do i watch for????

i guess i am also being overly protective since i am new to this.. and i may jump to conclusions i just dont want her to chew her tail or the other one for that matter i just want to see her healed and happy again

I would keep her separated from her cagemate until healing is well under way-she won't be able to move well, and will be prone to falling while in the collar. A smaller cage is recommended because if she does fall, it will reduce the distance and lessen the likelihood of a serious injury.

Is the collar the vet put on adjustible at all? If you think her nose doesn't look normal, and it is able to be adjusted, try loosening it just a little. It (her nose) shouldn't change color. I'll attach a pic of Riker in his collar..that might help, might not. If you could get a pic of her nose, it would be easier to advise.

Once in a collar, as well, she won't be able to use a regular pouch. A hammock placed low in the cage seems to work best for them to sleep in, or a shirt on the floor of the cage. It might not be easy for her to eat, either, and be prepared that you may end up having to hand feed. And watch for signs of depression. As to keeping her in the collar..if you think she may go after the surgical site, keep it on. One of those better safe than sorry things. Bird feeders-like you get at wal mart or the grocery store-fit in the collar and make it easier for them to eat on their own. Soft foods that they can lick, like BML, Ensure, and babyfoods, are going to be easiest for her. Other than that...just keep a really close eye on her.

Back to the collar..you can always make one (they tend to get pretty gunked up with food, and need changed in any case), you can keep her in the vet's one while you get another one made. Since she's already gone after it again when it seemed to be healed, if it were me, I would err on the side of caution and keep it on.

well i caught her several times going after her tail and i gave her some pain meds so i placed a straw on her tail to keep it straight so she cant really bend it now but i left the surgical site open for air... i also made her a new collar her nose was getting blue and the collar the vet gave her was turned down toward her body making it easy for her to curl herself up and go after her tail.. so now the new collar i made is up like a lampshade over the head... the way it is suppose to be... she is on the suncoast diet where she eats her food with her hands so i purried ( spelled wrong ) her food so its mushy and she can lick at it... i also bought those feeders like you said but she does not go near them so i will continue to hand feed ... i think tomorrow i will give her food in a syringe... but yes you are right it is better to be more cautious now...
i have just cried tonight thinking that this is all my fault and i feel so bad for her right now ... god i only hope everyday will get better...

Sad to say, she WILL need to be kept separated from her cagemate for AT LEAST a week. I, too, have 2 suggies with tail issues: Mars has the black tip missing from his tail (self-mutilated when I took a week's vacation) and Tiger Lilly has NO tail at all! Her mate & 2 children kept trying to "groom" her stump for her, each time costing her a little more tail. She looks more like a hamster than a suggie, but she has adjusted quite well to being tail-less. She just can't soar as far as she used to, but she still JUMPS!!

A few days of solitude FAR OUTWEIGH being tail-less. Hang in there!

Don't think it's your fault! There was no way you could know. They can't tell us what's going on...one of the things that makes these gliders so difficult. No blame is yours. You caught it before she really did serious damage, and deserve credit for that!

And yes, it can take a while before they'll use the feeders...they get downtrodden and depressed in the collars, and don't understand it's for their own safety, and want to be pampered. They also need to learn to maneuver in the thing. Can you blame them? I think they think they're being punished, and don't understand what they did wrong. Just keep up the wonderful care you're already giving, and things will turn out okay. Again, you can also call anytime if you need help or support.

If she doesn't seem to be eating enough to get her vitamins, tho, do try the ensure. It's almost like a treat for some gliders, in addition to being easy for them to eat, and may encourage her to eat more. Hand feeding her from the feeders may also help give her the idea of what she's supposed to do with it as well.

I know how hard this is, and how sad to see them in the collar, since I've been there myself. Hang in there and know we're here for you!

thanks all for the info and encourgement i needed that... you all are great
i will keep you posted on her tail... have a great day and enjoy

well now i have a new question... aqua is doing good with her tail she has been out of the collar during the day but i keep a very very close eye on her... i let aqua and sapphire do a real quick tent time together and i can see they miss each other sooo much ... but it was sapphire going after aqau's tail.. i now know who the more aggresive one is... i swaped pouches for them so they can smell the others scent and now i have aqua in her bonding pouch with me... my queston is.... when i get aqua's stitches out how can i prevent sapphire going after her tail??? i figure if i let them do tent time every day and every day longer maybe when its time to put them together sapphire wont go after aqua that much... does this make sense?? and keeping them seperated is not a option since they are my only 2 and i dont plan on breeding they have been best buds since oop and i would like to keep it that way... any sugestions would be greatly helpful for me overcome this next step in a week...
thanks again
