A person adopting from me put on their application they will clean the cage with baking soda and water... I know baking soda can be used for cleaning and they claim to be safe around pets, is this safe for the gliders?
Also does baking soda disinfect?
It does not seem like the best choice to me but I need some facts before I decide what to tell her...

I used it on a small section of my cage a couple days ago. Just to try it as a de-oderizer. My monthly cage scrubbing (err...cage scrubbing for one and clorax whipes for the other =X) isn't up for a little while and a wet cloth just isn't cutting it. I used baking soda and water then whiped it down after with a hot damp cloth. It cut the smell a little bit.

Okay thanks, I suggested Natures Miracle, which is what I use, and told her there are many different options.
A vinager baking soda mix is suggested online for general house cleaning also. I read one article that said vinager bleach mix is very effective to kill everything.

Vinegar and baking soda might be good for bubbling up stuck on "stuff". It won't disinfect, though. I have heard that 5% vinegar, used straight, is a bit of an effective disinfectant. Really, just for removal of organic debris, nothing beats good ol' Dawn dishwashing soap and hot water in my book. No matter what disinfectant you use, all the organic matter has to be removed before disinfectants are truly effective, anyhow. I use Dawn and hot water, rinse thoroughly, and then use a 10% bleach and water solution after. I then rinse that thoroughly. It's not as much work as it sounds. The scrubbing is done with the Dawn; with the bleach solution I just soak the cage down, let it sit and disinfect, then rinse.

any of you tried cleaning (scrub and hosing down) a flight cage? tried it once and it's soo difficult. i used to clean/disinfect my [smaller] cages outside and hose them down every week or two...before used small amount of dish soap, then began using bleach and recently switched over to either green works or vinegar & water (alternating). i'm looking for other alternatives to clean a flight cage. lately i'm only cleaning inside using the vinegar and water with a cloth b/c i'm not sure how to rinse all the solution of green works....i know its natural, but my gliders like to lick when they sense moisture anywhere in the cage.

I scrub down and hose my cages (with dish soap) every week or two. I break my back going down the stairs when my fiancee's not home but when he's home it not so bad..
Many people use steam cleaners, which I was considering trying.

All of my cages are flight cages! I have five cages right now. I have to pace myself throughout the week to get them all done! LOL!
I have a Steamfast steam cleaner that I use during the winter months here in Michigan. It is great, so long as I keep at the cleaning and don't miss a week.
