Just a thought here. Since our gliders eat with their hands and groom with their "spit", hands and nails...wouldn't it be possible that they could have say a piece of food (or urine or whatever) on their nails and scratch (sharp nails) an area, nick it and get an infection? People can do this..and nails are (on people at least) full of bacteria.
Here we have gliders that eat with their hands, walk on them, etc. then groom and scratch..hmmmm
Hang in there Lorna! Badger will be fine!! (((HUG)))

We have found what caused the sore
Today when I was cleaning the sore I decided to take a look at the area from the other side, I noticed a tiny black mark with a tiny lump (very much like a blackhead). So I called a lady I know who's husband is a dog/cat vet in town. I persuaded her to ask her husband to take a look at it for me. So I went in with Badger and he popped to lump. He put waht came out on a slide and thought it was a wood splinter. It was smushy from being in his skin for this long but that's what he thought it was... He reckoned it was working it's way out through the skin with the help from Badger doing all the likcing.
I'm thinking the splinter came from the door into the glider room, he has tried glide/jump on that door a few times before and after I ran my hand down it I could believe that a splinter could come off it.
Bourbon was right when she said what she thought we were dealing with. I wish she would move up here to VA and start educating ALL the vets as to the needs of sugar gliders. I can't thank everyone enough for all the words of wisdom and advice and support. If there are any other changes I'll keep you posted, but things are looking good now that the foreign object is out of his body.
I'm attaching a pic of him from play time tonight... he's looking a million times better Again, THANK YOU all.

Wonderful that you found the cause!!! In that last picture, he's saying "Extra Mealies Mom, I deserve them for being a brave boy!" So you be sure and give him some.

Quote:
Now really, WHO would have thought that?

Bourbon DID ask if there was any way he could have a splinter in there. She thought it could have been anything from a bug bite, splinter and nail scratch (Badgersmommy also suggested that one).
I think Bourbon is a Glider Psychic... she could have her own show .
I'm still helping them with feeding and giving extra fluids, I'll continue this only for another day or so and hopefully they will be back on track. I'm thinking at this point that Roxy is doing whatever he does ~ from playing to eating. This evening you could tell that she was having a lot of fun when out for playtime and then he decided he wanted to go take a nap. Within a minute she was gone in the pouch with him. If I offer her some food she will wait until Badger is there and lets him take some first, then she will take a piece and if he ignores the food/treat she tends to do the same (for anything except mealies), it's really fasinating to watch her follow his lead on almost everything.

Lorna... remember what I said, look at all possibilities, also look for something that he could have rubbed up on as well something in his play area.. a basket? a planter.. something he could have rubbed the top of his membrane on.. I would think that on the door it would have been splintered on the bottom?? or is the vet saying that it could have went in on the bottom and was pushing out at the top?
did you notice if the door was rough enough to splinter him?? I knw you said you checked it..
I am thrilled you have found the cause.. lets just make sure, check and double check, so it doesn't happen again..
Peggy, the membrane isn't something that is generally chewed on, I have a few gliders that have had the membrane torn, and they acted as if nothing had happened, they couldn't glide of course.. so it led me to conclude that whatever the problem, it had to be very localized..

Quote:
or is the vet saying that it could have went in on the bottom and was pushing out at the top?

That is exactly what he thought, he said that it looked like Badger, by licking at it, was pushing it in deep and the body will naturally try to expel any foreign object even it it goes in another direction.

Quote:
also look for something that he could have rubbed up on as well something in his play area.. a basket? a planter.. something he could have rubbed the top of his membrane on..

The door, baseboards, computer desk and 2 cabinates are the only wood objects in the room/play area. When I rubbed my hand up and down on the door it was rough and I was able to peel a few pieces off (hard to describe, but it's not varnished). I also went over the desk and base boards and they seemed very smooth.

Great.... seems like you both are in for a night of much needed sleep... you have done a great job .. give him an extra mealie for me.. and please keep me updated..
Wow, I'm glad you found what caused it! I wasn't sure if a glider would try chewing there or not, but knew SOMEthing had happened to it to start it off.."small enough you can't see it" but I didn't think to suggest a splinter (mental note taken). Give him a pet and get some rest! Let us know how his recovery goes!

Wow! I've been following this thread, and I'm so thrilled to read your success story! You've done a great job of caring for your wee ones! And sounds like you might've finally found a vet, eh? Maybe he'd be interested in adding gliders to his repertoire.

as of yesterday, she still doesn't have a vet in her area that will see gliders, the vet friend she had used is a cat and dog vet, and doesn't have the time to do exotics.. he is not an exotic vet.. she is still trying desperatly to find one though.. I gave her suggestions on trying to find one that hasn't done any before, but at least is willing to learn..
B. what about Dr. Sthal or Stahl. He sees gliders and is in Fairfax VA. His website is under the vet page on GC.
There is a vet in Ferry Farms Animal Clinic in Fredericksburge VA that treats gliders. That's about 35 miles from Warrenton VA. Marie has had her gliders nueterd there and treated. vets' name is DR. Hartitan DVM. 540-371-5090

Ellen thank you for the info of the vet in Fredericksburg. I will go see them soon and have a talk about gliders .
I actually found both the clinics that Dr Stahl is involved with. Unfortunatley he is spending most of his time giving lectures. He now has his own clinic "Seaves Exotics" in Vienna, this is where Badger got neutered and where they would not let me see a vet as they didn't think it was an emercency. The other clinic that he is affiliated with is Eastern Exotics in fairfax, he is a cofounder. That is where I went for the first wellness exam. I have never met Dr. Stahl, but had read wonderful things about him. I did try to see him and even begged and promised to pay extra if that's what it took .
I'm excited about the other vet you mentioned , this might the one!!!!!
The gliders are doing well, Badgers sore is almost gone and he was running like a mad man in the wheel last night. They still are not eating any fruits or veggies... I will try a few tricks of the trade tonight (maybe drizzle some honey over, or sprinkly on some Gliderade).
