I know that pine is toxic to gliders, but what about pine cones?

This sounds like such a silly question, but I ask because I recently spoke with someone at Australia Zoo who said that they give their gliders pine cones stuffed full of food as a foraging activity. I'm sure they wouldn't do that if pine cones were toxic, but I figured I'd ask here anyway.

First, it's a good question, not a silly one. wink And I honestly don't know the answer. smile But I do know pine nuts are given as a treat with no problems. I would only wonder if the pine cones in Australia are different than those in the U.S. and ours (or not all of our varieties) may be edible. dunno Otherwise, that sounds like a great treat station! Hopefully someone (maybe a botanist or arborist) will be along with definitive answers.

You're right, I didn't really think about the different types of pine trees. I will ask tomorrow what species of pine tree their pine cones come from-then we would know at least that the cones from those particular types of trees would be safe. See, I knew there was a reason I asked here, I didn't think it all the way through & someone was bound to come up with something I didn't think of! Lol. Thank you!

Dried pine cones that are mature (FULLY OPENED AND DRY) are safe as they no longer contain any pine sap. You can find them for sale in some pet stores as a toy/chewing device for small animals. You can also purchase them from here
http://www.forotherlivingthings.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=pine+cone&x=30&y=9
I also have used them and stuff treats in them for the gliders and they LOVE them (treats ot not!)
NOTE: if you gather them from outside...be sure they are fully opened, and dry before using. also make sure there are no chemical residues from spraying. I will only gather in areas where I know no dogs or cats have sprayed on them either...and check for bugs! ticks and such. UGH! that is why it may be better to purchase them. that site I mentioned has the CLEANEST cones I have ever seen! LOL

Good info to have- I never even thought of pine cones because of the toxcicity of Pine sap... I am glad someone thought to ask this question!

JillMarie is correct. I use the pine cones from the pet store for my animals - I don't have any pine cones around me.

If we never loved, then maybe we would never feel pain. Love anyway. It's worth it.

I have tons of different types of pine cones that have never been sprayed. Can they be boiled to clean out any bugs or maybe heated in the oven?

I would think heating them in the oven at a low temp for a couple of hours would kill anything you needed off them, before giving them to your gliders. It works for branches smile
