Help...my gliders left cheek is swollen under her eye. This happened a couple of months ago with her right cheek. We went to the vet and he said it was an abcess from something, but he couldn't say what, other than it wasn't a tooth. It cost almost 400 dollars to have her surgery and antibiotics. I drained my savings...but her health is worth it.
I am VERY concerned to see this again. and I can't afford much more of this considering I am doing my student teaching and can't work right now.

I have no idea what could be causing it...does anyone know anything ????

Please respond soon...I need some help.

Are you by any chance feeding hard pellets, nuts, seeds, or anything else that could scratch her gums, and allow bacteria to enter? This type of infection is usually associated with one of those, but not always. It is a form of lumpy jaw. Your vet may or may not be able to get a culture of whatever bacteria is invading, but it is worthwhile if he/she can. If not, shotgun with a combination of either Clindamycin or Clavamox (broad spectrum antibiotic) and there's another, I'll go look it up from when Riker had this..starts with an M...to cover all the bases for possible infective agents. I would advise, since i've been thru this a few times myself, for a course of treatment lasting no LESS than 6 WEEKS, since it recurred after the last time. Jaw infections can be difficult to treat, esp. if they invade the bony structure (an Xray can help determine this...Xray should be clean with well-defined lines...if it's diffused, or doesn't look normal, infection is likely in the bony tissue. I can give you a link to the thread with Riker's Xrays, but am at work, so can't repost them. Give me some time to find his last thread on this.

Here is the thread with the copy of the Xray that is NOT normal...both sides should match.

Riker's Infection

Farther down in the thread is a contrasting view of the same glider...one Xray normal, one not. You can see the difference.

Thank you for your response. I don't know if it is lumpy jaw though....the only reason I am speculative on this is because the abscess was in her cheek...that is what he drained....can lumpy jaw be in the cheek and not just the jaw???

Again thanks.

The swelling shows up in the cheek...when it is the jaw where the beginning of the infection started, if that makes sense. So yes, the cheek can swell from a jaw infection as it spreads. Or possibly it started in the juncture between cheek and jaw, and went from there. It can be difficult to diagnose, and hard to treat. Best treatment is shotgun with antibiotics. And the second name I was looking for is Metronidazole for the second med.

Lumpy jaw can be in the tissue and if severe enough it can invade the bone as well.

My suggestion is to have a culture done. Abcess may need to be drained again, flushed daily to allow the wound to drain and then heal from the inside out.... along with an oral antibiotic for a month to six weeks.

Some vets only perscribe med for 14 days and usually that will not clear up all of the infection... and thus it returns.

X-ray... would determine if there is only tissue involvement or wither or not it involves the bone as well.

Sending Get Well Wishes for a speedy recovery.

[:"green"]I have experience with this type of infection, too. Both of my oldest gliders have had it. Print out a copy of this entire thread along with the one that shows Rikers x-rays to bring with you to the vet. It is very important to get your little one onto a long course of antibiotics in order for her to completely heal. If the infection moves into the eye at all, it can cause total blindness and possible eye loss.
