My 8 1/2 yr. old male Glider, Tazzie, lost 1/2 the fur on the tip of his tail a few months ago. It then started to grow back and he looked kind of like a poodle. Then a few weeks ago the very tip of his tail became bald & red and now it looks like the bone is sticking out. There doesn't appear to be any infection or gangarene. I put some antibiotics on it but of course he sucked it all off. Tazzie is a bachelor and has never been sick. Thank you for any advice you can give me.

The only advice I can give it to take him to the vet. Usually tail chewing/sucking is the result of another problem. Some times as simple as an injury, other times, it can be something much more serious. Take your little man to the vet ASAP.

Leyna is right, you need to take him to the vet and have him checked out. What diet is he on? (Being 8 yrs old, probably a good one) Sometimes an illness can cause calcium to not properly absorb and can lead to HLP. In its mildest form, it can cause their tail to tingle and make them over groom or even chew on their tail. Now, I'm not saying that is what is going on, only a vet can tell you that but it warrents a vet check. Please watch him closely that he doesn't start to chew on his tail (which he might already be doing)

I know that my Sassy would always overgroom the tip of his tail whenever his teeth started to hurt him again. I would second the advice to take him in for a vet visit. It can't hurt and if nothing else would give you peace of mind.

To put in a third opinion: vet. If the bone IS exposed, it leaves him open to infection, self mutilation, and dying (necrotic, black) tissue, and he could lose his tail, if not his life. Please get him in as soon as you can.

As stated above... your glider needs to be seen by a vet ASAP. Plucking the hair from the tip of the tail... indicates the glider is stressed by pain or out of boredom. However, now that he is actually chewing the flesh... rule out the boredom. He is chewing because he is in pain. Pain can be the from a UTI, constipation or from a parasitic or bacterial issue. Only a vet can test and Dx the primary issue as to what the problem is. Also, since the tail is now chewed... the glider's tail may need to be docked since there is exposed bone, pain med (Metacam is usually given) and antibiotics for Primary Illness that caused the chewing in the first place.... for home care to prevent further damage to himself. Need further help... post to this thread. Please keep us updated as to the vet's findings and treatment.

Hopefully you have a vet that knows quiet a bit about gliders. Probably the initial place was caused by either stress or maybe as mentioned calcium deficiency. Of course there are a variety of other things that could have caused the glider to chew it's tail like constipation, injury, UTI, and the list continues. A check up to determine why he started to chew the tail should be done. The tail should then be amputated toward the body to remove the initial injury. It is probably not getting proper circulation. If it has deteriorated to the point that the bone is showing chances are it will work it's way back toward the body. Better to stop it now. Charlie H

Today I will be calling vets in the area to find one who has soom experience with Gliders. Thank you for all your input. I will keep you all informed. P.S. Tazzie's diet has consisted of dog food, fruit, seeds, peanuts, & occassionally meal worms. When we were given Taz there wasn't much info on them so I feed him by trial & error.

The first thing I would suggest after your vet visit is looking into a proven diet. Not to be mean, but your diet actually isn't what most people would consider healthy for a glider. Seeds and nuts espcially aren't very good for gliders. In the wild, they would never eat seeds or nuts and they are not designed to eat them in the least. There are several proven sugar gliders diets out there, including Bourbon's Modified Leadbeaters, the SunCoast diet, and Darcy's diet...

First off, nuts (or any very hard food) is a big no-no, and can cause a condition called 'lumpy jaw' or an infection in the jaw and face as bacteria take root in small scratches in the gums. I'll give you the links to 3 of the best most recommended diets for gliders..BML, Darcy's, and Suncoast: BML (Bourbon's Modified Leadbeaters) Darcy's Diet Suncoast Diet When people meet my suggies for the first time, and ask what they eat, my generic answer is Ensure or a Leadbeaters mix as staple, fresh fruit, frozen veggies (NEVER onions, garlic, lima beans or seasonings), yogurt, fruit nectars, gliderade, mealworms, and, of course, water. The usual advice is to pick an accepted diet and stick with it. BML's ingredients can all be gotten at your grocery store, and the vitamins/minerals at Petco. Same with Darcy's, as the staple is Ensure with added Jurassical (from Petco), the SOFT pellets from the Suncoast diet are available from Suncoast Sugar Gliders, or under the name Insectivore Fare from Exotic Nutrition or the Sugar Glider Shop. I hope this helps some. This could be from something lacking in his diet..I've seen that before. Always remember-we are all here if you need us, anytime, and don't be afraid to ask questions..that's the purpose of this site and we are always happy to help.
