hello- i have a female glider that recently got her hand stuck in her bed and appeared to have bitten off one or her thumbs in an attemp to excape. I was able to cut her free from the bedding. It has been a couple of days now and the hand appears to becoming more swollen now then it was right after the incident. I was wondering what I should do to help with the swelling. She does not appear to be in any pain, and the actual cut has begun to heal just fine, except the swelling of the hand. Any sugguestions?

The hand is badly infected, hence the swelling. You need to IMMEDIATELY get her to a veterinarian for treatment and antibiotics. Unless you do, the infection is very likely to go systemic, which can lead to painful death. PLEASE get her to a vet right away! Do you need help finding one?
Also, please take a few minutes to register with the board. It is free and will give you full access to the benefits of the board. In about a half hour, this thread will be moved to the Health & Hygiene forum. At that point, you will need to be registered so you can post updates for those of us that will be worrying about your little one.

Thank you so much for your advice! I am new to the Portland area but was able to the southwest animal hospital, The Exotic pet practice. I have an appointment this afternoon. I will keep you updated on her progress.

Penelope (our female glider with the injured hand) was able to see the vet yesterday (monday) and was put on medication to help with the infection and pain/swelling. The vet doesn't think there are any broken bones in her hand. Today (Tuesday) she went back in for a minor surgery to remove the rest of the bone from her thumb that she was not able to chew through, which was causing the infection. She appears to be recovering very well. Her appetite has been normal and she has been taking her meds pretty well today. She had to have a collar put on her head in order to help with the recovery process, and she is not very happy with that. However, she has stopped trying to get it off constantly and appears to becoming more used to it. I can't thank you all for your great advice and thoughtful words.

I'm so glad your vet was able to help her. sounds like the surgery was a success. Have you been able to figure out how to set up her cage now that she's in an e-collar?

Right now she is in her small traveling cage to help stop her from moving around too much. her sleeping bag is on the ground with the opening pulled open so she can enter without any problems. But if you have any suggestions about the cage setup with the e-collar i am all ears

For feedings, you can hang the trough-style pet-bird feeders on the side of the cage. Liquify the food so that it comes down the tube more readily. Here is a picture of the type of feeder I am referring to:
You can also hang Shelf Hammocks in the cage so your glider has something to land on as a safety net if she tries to explore the top of the cage. Some people make a tunnel for the glider to go into for sleeping. You can easily make one by using two plastic embroidery hoops (for each end of the tunnel) and a piece of fleece looped through the hoops. The water bottle should be positioned about 3" above the cage floor so she can easily get her mouth around the nozzle of it, in spite of the e-collar.

So it has been 5 days since Penelope’s surgery and her hand is still swollen and there appears to be pus around the area where the vet performed the surgery. She is still on anti-bodices and pain/swelling meds. Is this normal after surgery? I am going to call the vet in the morning but I will take any advice? she has an e-collar on still and i was wondering if there was some ointment that I could put on that could help?

If it has been 5 days and the hand still looks infected, then another trip to the vet is advised. It needs to be cleaned and a sample of the "pus/infected tissue" needs to have a culture and sensitivity test done to determine the type of bacteria involved so that a target specific antibiotic can be given. Also, I don't know what meds are already being given. Metacam is often given for swelling but should NOT be given for more than three days as it can cause organ damage/failure. If you have her on metacam, please talk to the doctor about something different.

update- we brought penelope back into the vet on tuesday and he said her hand is looking better. There had been a mistake in the labeling of her meds (metacam and SMZ-TMP) and the antibiotic (SMZ) had a label stating to only have her on it for 5 days and the other (metacam) had no time table listed on it. We had taken her off (metacam) last friday and SMZ on saturday. The correct time he wanted to have her on the antiboitic was 21 days and metacam for 5 days. Anyway, we got everything cleared up and added amoxicillin to her meds. She still has a swollen hand, but it is looking better everyday. He sugguested soaking her hand in hot water (if we could get her to allow us) to help with blood circulation. I tried last night and had mixed results. She allowed me to put her bad arm in a little cup of water for about 1-2 min. Has anyone ever tried doing something like that? or do you have any suggestions? thanks again for all of your knowlege!! We will keep you posted with her progress.

update After we got the med mix up figured out, her hand started looking much better, the color got better, the swelling started to dissipate and the wound is scabbing over. Unfortunately now she has been off the Metacam for about 3 days now and her swelling seems to be getting worse again. She is still on her antibiotics but I am worried that it was too soon to take her off an anti-inflammatory. However, Metacam can be dangerous after a few days so I was wondering if anyone knows of any other anti-inflammatory medications that are less harmful?

Poor little suggie! sounds like she has been through a lot. I hope she starts getting better soon! I was thinking.....I'm no expert...but could the heat be causing the swelling to happen? I know when one of my kids gets hurt ice helps with swelling, heat makes it worse. It's just a thought. Are you still using the hot water? I would put a call in to the vet and see what they say. They may want to take another look at it. Keep us posted on how she's doing!!!
