It's not ALL homemade. The original version is what the vet sent him home in. A lid like the size of small butter dish or what my mealies come in. They cut out the center and then covered the cut edge w/cloth surgical tape. The outside edges were the lip of the lid so they weren't rough at all. After I wiped my tears of feeling so sorry for him we all sort of laughed becaused he looked like he ran straight through a mealie lid and got stuck! Here's a LINK to a full size picture of the original 'lid-collar.' Lid Collar - Sadie Eating Lid Collar - Poor SadieI stayed up with him all night so I could feed him and make sure he could drink ok and get around his little hospital cage. During the night I noticed if he could get sitting up like a little buddah, his little nose could reach his neuter site. Now I really wasn't getting any sleep! When Eddie got up the next morning he got the duct tape and found a lid. I cleaned it real well and cut an opening in the middle a little larger than the original lid he was wearing. MY lid was a full size butter dish lid so I had to cut off the lip, leaving a rough edge. All I needed was for the new lid to stick out about 1/2" more than his original collar. Lauren kept him busy with HPW while I stapled the 'extension' on and covered it with duct tape. Once it was covered completely I went over it with a cotton ball and alcohol. Here's a pic of the extension under construction. We took a break and took some pictures. 1/2 way done with modifications I will be ordering a real e-collar for MoJo's neuter coming up in March just in case his lid isn't quite big enough either. I spoke with the vet 3 times before Sadie's neuter and each time made sure he was coming home w/an e-collar. And the lid would have been perfect had it just been a little bigger around. In fact, it's a PERFECT fit. There's no way he's getting it off, and yet it's not rubbing his neck raw. So 3 cheers to them for that! And I have to say I think other than not being able to use his hands, I feel like he can eat a little easier with the lid vs. a regular e-collar. So now I have to decide if today's the day to take it off. The vet said that night, but I was like nooooooooo, don't think so. His neuter was Monday, so now it's been a full 3 days. The site looks really well, not red and no dried blood. They left the pom on and used glue so I'm wondering how long it takes the glue to 'go away.' I'm more concerned now with over grooming.

How do you get it on him? Is it just a hole? It fits over his head?
I need details!

yep thats how our boys who get neutered at Farmers branch are collared by the vet there. The lid is cut and fit to the gliders neck and stapled in place. the lids have medical tape around the neck area but are disposable and for short term use only as there is not enough padding around the neck (no moalfoam).

Eh, I wondered if I was going to have to explain this part. Let me try........... When they first cut the hole out of the middle of the lid, they just started cutting from the outside edge/lip where the lid would seal around the rim of the dish. They cut a straight line to the center, and then cut out the center hole. At this point it would be a broken circle I guess you would say. Then when they put it on him (after taping the edges) they had to staple the 'ends' together at just the right tightness. That was the 1st part I checked was to make sure the staple folded flat and a nail couldn't get caught. I ended up covering their staples and mine once I was finished just to be sure no accidents occured. I have no experience with any other collar on a glider so I can't even begin to compair, but this lid seams like it would be better if were clear like the e-collars. How sticky is the moleskin? Maybe we could use the same supplies to make a collar like this - clear plastic w/moleskin around the neck and outter edges. It really is a nifty/thrifty way, but I'm thinking it would take lots of practice to get it to fit just right. And I'm tellin' ya, Sadie's is PERFECT. No rubbing, but he aint gettin' this sucker off. Believe me, he's tried. Most of his waking moments are spent with all fours propped up against the back of his lid while he's chattering and rolling around. Bad Mommy! Stop laughing. Cora, how'd your appt. go?

That is an interesting idea. I was wanting to learn how to make an e-collar and I think it would be great to learn both.
I would really like to see a demonstration about e-collars. Making them and putting them on! Maybe when I go to one of the conventions they will have a demo there.

You're in luck, Ashley! I don't know how far away Germantown is from Hartsville, but there's going to be a "glider gathering" in February where you could learn how to make one & apply it. (sorry but my geography of the Volunteer State is just a little lacking: I know where Hartsville, Lebanon, Nashville & Clarksville are....the end! I need to scramble for my map to find Big Sandy, Dixon, and....oooh....where is it that Wanda lives???? used to be Murfreesboro but I've forgotten )

It's quite pittiful actually, to me anyway, to watch him sleep in his cage. Most of the time I have him wrapped in a fleece blanket in my hands or my lap and he usually ends up on his back! And that is really cute.
