Oh, this is sooo sad. I am so sorry to have read this sad outcome. I guess we expected too much from Gladys. I like the thought that she waited for Lucy to come and say goodby.

Rest in Peace Gladys and prayers being sent to Lucy for comfort during this difficult time.

Donna, you bet we're having a necropsy done. My vet's convinced (as crittermom suggested above) that this was not just pneumonia. It might have been multi-organ failure, or primarily heart failure, or several other possibilities.

Thank you so much for all your condolences. Chey's gliders even got out of their cage tonight to type out a message to my gliders and Miss Lucy. It was so sweet .

I want you to know that while there's sadness, I had a year with her that I had no right to expect. Those of you who saw her at the SGGA fully expected her to die during that weekend, I know. And the fact that she recovered and lived another year is more than I had any right to expect, and I'm so grateful for it!

These are such remarkable animals. I don't know if this is a coincidence or not -- but my other family of gliders, which never EVER rise before 1:30 a.m., ALL came out tonight at 9:00 just to crawl around on me for about half an hour. I have no rational explanation for that, but it was so sweet and comforting.

Thanks again -- We should know the results of the gross necropsy tomorrow, though the labs and slides will take awhile to produce....

Lucy, I have said on the phone all I can say. My heart is broken for you and your glider family. But I agree with you that she had more time than we all thought she had. Even Gladys'. She is a TRUE PRINCESS and what a fighter.

She is with all her cousins and other glider now and will be there for all of us that in time may see our little one cross the bridge.

Lucy, I don't know what to say...my heart hurts so much for you and Reepicheep. Have no doubt Ms. Glady's waited for her mom to come kiss her goodbye. Rest in peace sweet Gladys.

i really feel for you as i no if i lost a glider it would be like losing a child. i'm sure God will put aall of us who have lost gliders together one day when its our turn to join them. i no nothing can replace gladys on this earth but i would look for another gladys the second with similar traits.

Thanks again to all of you -- I'm overwhelmed by the support from my friends here and love you all!

Reepicheep left their pouch last night and won't go back to it. He clearly knows she's gone and isn't coming back. He seems a little bewildered and isn't terribly comforted by me, but I'm spending a lot of time with him hoping that eventually he will --

My vet sent me the preliminary gross necropsy results tonight. It will surprise no one who had seen her that a severely diseased liver was the most obvious finding. Additionally, she had a tremendous amount of peritoneal fluid, her lungs were largely collapsed with clear fluid in her chest, her heart was grossly dilated, and her gallbladder was distended. There's nothing we could have done for her. How she was so functional for so long is just beyond me, with this kind of internal damage occurring.

The next step will be finding out -- if possible -- what the nature of the liver damage was. That will take a few weeks, but I will update everybody when we find that out. At this point we can't rule out cancer, aflatoxins, or other kinds of liver damage. My guess is that the liver damage eventually took its toll and began causing the shutdown of other organs.

I feel a little self-indulgent posting all this, because it is therapeutic for me, but I also hope it's helpful to others down the road, once we know more.

Lucy, she truly was a fighter! With all of those things wrong, she put up a good fight. I am proud of her, she must have felt that it was okay to let go, I hope that Reepicheep is better soon..

Lucy-you are truly an amazing woman and glider mom. Your strength, under these difficult circumstances, is incredible. Thank you for letting us be there with you as you've traveled this painful path-fighting to save Gladys and then letting her go. Sharing this experience with us will, no doubt, help save many gliders. And Gladys lives on in our hearts.

I'm glad you posted the results of the necropsy. Dr. Bruce is going to be taking a second look at Dawn's slides. She was full of peritoneal fluid, too, but it was not clear. I'm interested if ultimately there may be something we can all learn from our sad experiences.

Thanks again to all of you. Reepicheep is doing okay. He got out and played last night/this morning, and is eating well.

I agree, Linda, that it's important to get these necropsies and lab reports to find out what it is that's killing our gliders. I don't know how old Dawn was, but I'm really worried about the 2-3 year age of so many glider deaths. In fact, I think there are probably a series of little polls we could do about this --

Frankly, I think heredity really matters here, too. All the more reason to know about the ancestory of our gliders, if possible.

Dear Lucy,

You don't know me, but I've learned a lot about you and your little Gladys, just through this post.

I've learned that Gladys was a fighter and a beautiful glider who was meant to be a part of your family. And I have learned you too are a fighter who fiercely loves her furkid family and watches over them with much love in your heart...

It is not self indulgent, but educational when you post- for the newbie Glider lovers like myself to the old pros out there as well. Since I believe most of us have probably lost a furbaby to the Rainbow Bridge at one time or another, we all grieve with you. I feel a hollowness in the pit of my stomach thinking of you kissing your little girl and then her letting go of her battle for life... You two were meant for one another.

I'm so sorry for your loss
