So sorry to hear Gladys is ill again, Lucy. I will be thinking of you two... hoping she recovers, with such a great mommy to look after her. As always, if there is anything at all I can do for you, call me day or night. I know how much she means to you, and you know how much you mean to all of us.

Lucy, I'm soooo sorry. I know what you are going through
I just went through this with Dawn. I know you've got more important things on your mind right now, so disregard my e-mail request.
Hugs & Love,
Linda

I just talked to the vet again. She thinks the Lasix may be helping a LITTLE, though it may be too early to tell. It's kind of a catch-22. The Lasix is a diuretic, and at the same time she's getting fluids -- it's a hard balance. She really needs the oxygen, and is pushing hard to breathe. My vet doesn't think she's in pain or horrible discomfort, though, and sees her initial response to the Lasix as positive, though it's guarded optimism.

Reepicheep is with her and apparently REALLY enjoys the good oxygen Someone, or perhaps both of them, ate fairly well last night. I doubt that she's eating much, though -- the last day I had her at home she was eating slowly, and is having more problems now than she was then.

We should know more as the day goes on. Thanks for bearing with me-- I hope people don't mind the frequent postings. It helps me, and I keep thinking that the more we experience these things together, the more we learn about symptoms and diagnosis and treatment. Thanks for going through this with us. I've already told the vet that if at any time today she dies, that a necropsy, labs and slides are to occur -- just in case.

Gladys is a fighter, though, and I'm sure she'll give it all she's got.

I agree, I'm glad you are posting. I wish I could have when Dawn was so sick. I just want you to know that when she gets too, too, tired of fighting you will see it in her eyes, (I'm remembering and crying my eyes out). Remember as often as she may see the vet, they don't know her like you do, and may not realize how shee feels, because gliders are so good at hiding it, until they can't any more. I know you know this, but you may not want to admit it right now.

I'm so sorry that you have to go through all this Lucy! It is never easy to decided to put a friend down, but if Gladys is in as much pain as you say she is, then it may be for the best. Lot of prayers and support going out for you in your time of need. Hang in there Lucy and shower your little girl with love.

I am assuming that they are using the lasix to get the fluids off of the lungs, however, why was the urine orange colored (hematurea) blood in urine, or was the specific gravity too high (ie dehydration) With lasix you have to watch for dehydration and sodium wasting, lasix causes the patient to diurese fluids quickly (increased urine output). As I stated before, gliders tend to respond more quickly and much more severely to illnesses than their human counterparts due to their shear size. However, as sick as your little one is and what all she has been through in the past you need to do what you think is best. I only asked you the above questions not to question your decision, but to inform and educate us fellow glider parents. I believe we all will stand behind any decision you make and support you all the way...I know I certainly will.

The vet thinks the lasix is helping a little, and isn't ready to throw in the towel yet -- so we'll keep trying tonight. I won't let it go on for a long time, but as long as she's not in pain, and is relatively comfortable and is showing some sign of improvement, I'm willing to wait it out and see what happens. Her mate (Reepicheep) is still with her, which is a good sign, and she's eating and grooming a little. While she's considerably weaker than she was a few days ago, the vet does see her as slightly improved from early this morning. I'm hoping to talk to her again soon, as I'm taking them their dinner - A homecooked meal . I think I'll be able to tell more when I see her.

Another thought is sometimes congestive heart failure is confused as pneumonia because fluid backs into the lungs. The lasix will take care of the fluid on the lungs. People can live with congestive heart failure with proper medication, however, you need to first need to find out if infact that is what she has and secondly what is causing it. I suspect that this maybe a sequela to the liver damage she sustained previously and the respiratory problems maybe a symptom of a more systemic process. But DO NOT DISPAIR if you get the fluid down your baby will feel and look so much better. But if this is an on going problem your baby may have to say on a low dose of lasix or at least an occasional dose when symptoms arise (if I remember correctly lasix is one of the cheaper drugs) I am just just suggesting theories, I am not a vet...your vet know a whole lot more than I. I am praying for Gladys, you and Reepicheep (because where would we be without our husbands ?)

A little while ago, I took Gladys & Reepicheep their dinner at the vet's. The tech brought Gladys out to me, and I couldn't see her long because she needed to get back into the oxygen pretty quickly. She looked asleep. Her eyes were closed, her ears down, but other than that, she looked okay. I held her for a minute, kissed her and told her I loved her. Then the tech took her from me, and she died.

I guess I want to think that she waited for me to come and held on that long, and then it was time to go. In reality, she probably had just been out of the oxygen for a few minutes and couldn't tolerate it.

My task now is to tend to Reepicheep, who absolutely adored his lady. She liked him, too, but the there was no comparison....

I'll post in memorials later tonight, partly because I want the whole story to be there --

Thanks for your support. I don't know what I'd do without my glider people family.

Oh - the tears, the tears.... Saying I'm so sorry doesn't help but I truly am so very sorry. Little Gladys was such a lucky wee one to have you to care for her and to love her. Reepicheep will be okay as long as he has you with him and I think you are right - Gladys held on for you, and then her task in this world was over. Lucy, I am still in disbelief, as I know you must be, but if she was going to go, she didn't suffer long - and she was with the ones she loved.

Lucy,
don't belittle the idea that she held on to see you once more before she went.
I admit my rationale wants to reason the same way, but there's more to bonds between people and animals than most of us might realize.

I feel she knew how much you loved her, and i think she held on knowing how sad you would be if you hadn't gotten that chance.

I feel for you. Hang in there, and you have her mate to comfort each other.

Tanja

[:"green"]Lucy,
Words seem so inadequate at a time like this. We are all deeply saddened by your loss. Like you, there is no doubt whatsoever in my mind that she waited for her mom.

We love you. [/]

Lucy, I'm terribly sorry to hear about Gladys, and yes, Reepicheep needs you desperately now.
Are you going to have a necropsy done? The pneumonia might not have been her only problem; Darcy's pneumonia was actually caused and complicated by lymphoma.
(And no, I had no idea he was in respiratory distress, I only knew he was uneasy and not his normal bouncy self.)
