I forgot to mention this... I talked to my vet and we decided it would be okay to introduce Godiva back to her mate Specter. Since he's already been exposed to Godiva, we aren't really putting him at any risk and we think it would do Godiva some good to have some glider company. I put them back together this morning and Specter was so happy to see his lady. Godiva seemed a little over whelmed by his show of affection, but didn't seem upset. If Specter has his way, Godiva will be spotless with in the hour smile

Also, some more good news! Godiva is up to 1 tablespoon per feeding. I also got her to take few bites of a pureed papaya mixed with yogurt and a couple bites of apple sauce. She still won't drink water, but at least she's starting to try different things... And, since she has been eating so much, I've been able to discontinue her sub-q fluids. I haven't had to sub-q her for 3 days now!

Awww, I'm so glad to hear she has her mate back - I have to wonder if that might speed her recovery, love does wonders you know! Its absolutely wonderful that shes eating so much, I wonder if she would drink flavored pedialyte or juice? It might be like training wheels to get her back on water...

I want to stress yet again, Godiva's neurological condition is not improving. Her main improvements are due to her increased appetite. She is getting physically stronger, but it's actually making things more difficult for both her and myself. She's getting very hard to hand feed because she won't hold still, but she can't/won't eat on her own, she just kind of flops around in her food. Also, she's getting too active for her Kritter Keeper, but she can't be in a wire cage because she rams her head into the bars and rubs her nose/face raw. I put her back with Specter in hopes that maybe he would help her live a normal life, maybe leading her to food, help her groom, etc.

Ohhhhhhhhh frown I stand corrected. I'm so sorry. At this point, we have to celebrate even the smallest progression though. She drank some water! She got to spend time with her honey! She's getting stronger! (blessing in discuise)...

~sigh~ I'm kind of flustered as to what to do about Specter too. I had him with Godiva in the Kritter Keeper during the day, but he wanted out when it was time to wake up. It's way to small for an active/healthy glider, but Godiva can't be in a regular cage. So, I don't know what I'm going to do now. Specter was so happy to be back with Godiva at first, but I don't think he understands that she can't run around and play like he can... It breaks my heart to see him so frustrated and confused by her behavior.

Maybe even if they can't be together all night they could have "playtime together" (although I know Godiva can't go far) and perhaps sleep together? And then just have different adjacent cages at night? I was able to make this work pretty well for my 2 gliders a while back when they were fighting all the time.

Lynsie, you mentioned getting a rept. Honestly, I don't think a rept would be a suitable enclosure for Godiva at this point in time. She tends to bury her nose/head in corners and I'm afraid she would hurt herself some how on the poles of a rept. Also, she has been attempting to climb, but due to her lack of coordination, is constantly falling. Even if I laid a rept on it's side, I fear an 18 inch fall may be too much for her brain at this point in time. If Specter is willing to sleep with Godiva during the day, I will continue to let him. I think it does them both some good....

The longer this goes on, the more I'm starting to believe that Godiva might of had a stroke. A stroke would explain the bulk of her symptoms, as well as her lack of response to treatment. If she did in deed have a stroke, now a whole new set of questions come in to play. Why would such a young animal have a stroke? What might have triggered it? Can she be rehabilitated and possibly live a semi-normal life? The list goes on...

I had wondered about Cessna having a stroke, since neither vet could really figure out what caused her symptoms at first. She just lost the ability to use her back legs, along with a lot of the feeling in them. I had similar problems with her trying to climb the bars of her "hospital cage" and ended up stringing a hammock across the top half of it at Val's suggestion. I found her sleeping in it one night before she had to go in her ecollar due to SM, and she stopped climbing after that.

How old is Godiva? I agree it would make sense for an older glider to have a stroke, but not a much younger one...though I have known people 20-30 years old who have had strokes, and if it can hit anyone of any age, it can probably do the same with gliders. Both vets I saw eventually agreed on spinal inflammation as the cause of Cessna's ailment. We are still not sure what caused it, though the fact that she was 12 was considered a big factor.

I wish you good luck...I will say a prayer for Godiva.

Stroke is most often caused by high blood pressure, has your vet told you what might cause high blood pressure in a suggie? Also, I believe that diabetes can also cause a stroke, that may be a thought to toss around...did her blood tests reveal anything that may indicate diabetes? I think I read somewhere that you can actually have a stroke as a result of shock.

My aunt had a stroke in her twenties - she ended up with pneumonia because she had trouble swallowing & aspirated a lot of what she tried to swallow. If Godiva DID have a stroke, this is something you might want to watch for.

Gina, when Godiva had her first blood test done, she was only 56 grams, weak, and anemic. I do believe her sugar was low, but we pretty much associated that with her lack of eating... Now that she's been eating more and has fattened up a little, I'm going to see if we can get another blood panel done. Also, I'm working on getting x-rays done to see if they can tell us anything.

Well, I talked to my vet yesterday and she's recommending me to a specialist... I'm going to set up an appointment with them as soon as I can and see what they can do for Godiva. After talking to Dr. Renae we have pretty much concluded that if the specialist can't offer any help or suggestions, Godiva will most likely be euthanised. While the thought of it breaks my heart, it's obvious that Godiva will never have any quality of life in her state frown

????? I justed checked on Godiva and she's eating out of a bowl!!!! She's got both paws in there pretty much standing in her food, but she's eating totally on her own... I've been leaving a bowl of food in there for a while now on the off chance that she might decide to eat on her own and mostly, she's just been bumping into the bowl or wading threw the food, never eating it... I already hand fed her breakfast, but if she's eating on her own, maybe tomorrow I won't won't have to hand feed her. That would make tomorrow the first day in 3 weeks I didn't have to hand feed her! Could my little girl be getting better? I wonder what sparked the change? I haven't done anything different with her...

Well, the good news first... Godiva spent the night in a regular cage with Specter. I moved the nest box to the cage floor and also put the food dish on the floor so she could find it. This morning, the food bowl was empty and Specter and Godiva were sleeping in the nest box. Also, last night, I saw her perched on the edge of her food bowl eating a yogurt/apple sauce mix that I made for her and Specter. She was really wobbly, but she keeping her balance smile

And now for the not so good... Godiva still isn't grooming herself and looks like a total mess. Also, she has started this head bobbing/weaving thing. I don't quite know what to make of it. She does seem a lot more aware of her surroundings now, but at the same time, it's like they overwhelm her...
