Hi,

I would just like to hear some GOOD stories from those of you who only have ONE glider or who have successfully had one glider. Also, I would like to know how much time you spend OR try to spend with your suggie.

Thanks!!!

One of our 2 gliders was put down after getting pneumonia very badly. Our little guy, ShyGuy, did fine on his own for several months. He is still technically alone, but we just adopted three girls from a nice woman and they're living next to each other now. Eventually we are going to intro them and hopefully they'll live together.

I've heard many stories of solo gliders doing fine. We always visit with our little guy for some time every night (it varies from 20 minutes to 3 hours depending on what we're doing). He has a huge cage, with lots of toys, and he loves his wheel - we make sure he's active and eating (but not overeating).

I believe solo gliders can thrive with the right attention and close monitoring. A pair or more may be happier in most cases, but the special glider can do fine on their own. ShyGuy is very mellow and often dislikes too much company, so he is an ideal candidate for being a solo.

I think Kasanolia has a solo glider, Christopher Lee, that is doing well. I think it really depends on the personality of the glider. I've had a lone glider before, and with lots of love and attention, I believe they can live, but thriving is a matter of opinion. Gliders, like humans, are naturally social. Some gliders are like me - they don't like too much social interaction... but every once in a while, they still need it to thrive. Some are like most of my friends, who would die if they were alone for a week. They love spending time with other animals... but there's something intangible about spending time with your own species that makes it more valuable. It's something I wouldn't want to deprive any animal of unless I had no other choice. JMHO.

I've got one glider here who has rejected every attempt at intros. He did the same at the previous rescue home he was at. He seems to be happiest living in the same room as the other gliders, but not having one in his cage. He has shown interest in 2 other gliders before, but only from afar. He gets extra playtime w/me and spends a lot of daytime on me as well to make up for being alone. I do not recommend planning on keeping lone gliders, but sometimes it's their choice.

I think this is tricky to answer. Someone who has just one glider and never gets another, might think that they have a happy healthy glider. They would never know what kind of glider they have if they never introduced it to another. For example, I had my first glider by herself before getting the second. She seemed happy enough by herself. But once I paired her, she became a new glider. Much more outgoing, bold, friendly, playful, etc. I never would have known that she could be that way. And lone glider owners probably don't know what a difference it is either. Not that a lone glider can't be happy...

Had a solo glider but not a happy story. She did OK, but I wouldn't want to see her now as a solo glider still.

I fully agree with Nari.

Mia was alone for a month and I thought she was really happy.

But now with Milo, She is a completely different glider. Her personality is really shining now.

What age is too old to introduce gliders? Can an onler glider be introduced to a younger one?

Really depends on the glider's personality, not age. Intact males can be more difficult to introduce. You can introduce an older glider to a younger one. Sometimes that works better. But you do need to make sure that the younger one is about the same size as the older one. Or just be really careful to monitor them together at first. A smaller glider could get seriously hurt by an older, bigger glider. If you want to do introductions, there's a lot of helpful suggestions out there for how to do it. Make sure you do some research.

I have an only glider, I tried to introduce her to one glider and she would try to dominate her and would not sleep in the same pouch given a choice. The one I was introducing her to was a lone glider too and blind to top it off. Shy wanted the companionship but Rascal wanted none of it. So I got 2 joeys for Shy and Rascal was introduced to appr. 4 other gliders (all one at a time and over a span of time) but for some reason does not get along with others whether her with them or them with her. I now try to spend extra time with her in the evenings. I wish I could carry her around with me during the day, but she is extremely pouch protective and will crab at every jarring. I think she's going to be one of the ones where she likes being in the room with them just not in the same cage. I wish it was differently because I have seen Shy blossom since getting cage mates, but.....
