Ok, I just read in another post "What NOT to Feed" that 'Anmaw' said you should not feed raw sweet potato... I never knew this. What does feeding it raw do to the suggies, mine had it last night for dinner and ate all of it (1 tablespoon) between the two of them. Have I done something terribly wrong???

dont worry they will be fine--a lot of people feed thier suggies raw sweet potatoes--there has just been some discussion as to why you shouldnt feed it to them-- one time will not hurt them-- we do not throughly cook ours--we will peel them, cut them, and place them in a microwave safe bowl with water (just enough to cover them) and microwave for a few minutes--
this is why people say you should not feed raw sweet potatoes, as written by Glideroo: "Feeding raw sweet potatoes is not recommended as they contain trypsin inhibitors: substances that inhibit or prevent the pancreas from producing trypsin which is an enzyme essential for the absorption of protein by the intestine. You should, therefore, cook sweet potatoes before giving them to your glider. "

Chaungo1, Sorry my post upset you. The poster had requested a list of things that were no-no's and I just listed some things that I had read that you shouldn't feed them. Did you check out the Safe Fruits & Veggies? I really need to learn how to do that thing where you can just click on it. I think we all, at one time or the other, feed things that are no-no's and then find out later that they aren't the best things in the world for them. I just read a post recently where someone's gliders had found some chocolate that's a no-no and they are okay. Once again, sorry I upset you.

Oh Anman, you didn't upset me at all, what upset me is the fact that I fed my babies something that I shouldn't have . I thank you for posting that information or else I would have continued to keep feeding it... especially since they ate ALL of it
I'm still unsure as to why it's not safe to feed the sweet potatos raw... do you know???

Since when is it unsafe to feed raw vegetalbles. People come on. Gliders do not have kitchens in the wild. They eat raw fruits, vegetables, insects, birds, lizards, eggs. All raw in the wild. I really do not think its that big a deal to give gliders raw sweet potatoes. breeders and glider owners have been feeding them raw for years and years and years with problems. Why all of sudden is it dangereous to feed raw sweet potatoe? I do not mean to seem harsh just would like more info before people stop feeding sweet potatoe altogther over what one person said. Gliders love this type of veggie and personnally I think its very nutricious for them.

Sweet potatoes don't grow wild in Australia hehe anyway, neither does most of the stuff we give our kids..difference being that they live a whole lot longer with us than in the wild. I give mine sweet potatoes..they LOVE THEM!

Oh I know they don;t grow wild, LOL. Hey farmers most likely grow them, LOL. And I am sure our little boogers could not resist sinking their teeth into some.

They also have predators and such in the wild, which helps explain why they live longer in captivity.

Ooopps I did not mean to stir up a small whirlwind . I'm new to gliderland and just trying to do the right thing for the little fuzz balls .

Regular potatoes are what we aren't supposed to feed them...but I was eating french fries one night mos. ago and Badger literally snatched one from my hand and ran across the table, he was making all kinds of "happy" sounds while I was panicing and trying to get it away from him..he was NOT about to let me have that fry!! lol (I finally got it, but will never forget the sad look on his face) *sniff*

heheh oh man that is priceless. I can just see a glider running around with a fry. heheh. I feed mine raw sweet potato from time to time they haven't kield over yet. I for one wouldn't know how to cook a sweet potato and even if I did I would more than likely over cook or burn the potato.

Lets get back on topic.
First if you peel the sweet potota and wash it it should be fine.
And we need to remember that most of our gliders have not been raised in "the wild".
So let's stay on topic.

Thanks Ellen,
I was peeling the potato and chopping it into cubes, I do this with all the fruits and veggies (less mess to clean up). I think I'll continue to feed it to them the way they like it and about once every 7-10 days.
OK now I can sleep peacefully tonight .

I feed raw sweets and was wondering about continuing to do so, but I think unless there is a proven issue I will do so.
