My lil sydney pasted away yesterday. I am so sad, I can't stop crying. He was 6 months old and he was a doll. Out of my five, he was the most playful, the most lovable and he just loved me. I came home from church to find him on the bottom of the cage and picked him up he just looked at me and didn't want to play. I knew something was wrong. I tried to give him a mealing and he didn't want it so I immediately called the vet. I was getting ready to take him in and he started seizing and then his body went limp, then he would have another seizure and this went on for about 15 min. When I finally go to the vet about 20 min after this started, he was unconscious. They took him back and put him on oxegen and gave him a calcium shot and some other stuff. About 15 min later he woke up and I got to go see him. As soon as he heard my voice he started to try to move, I picked him up and he just looked at me like don't let me go. I clung on to me and it was just so sad. He died a few hours later at the vet hosp. The doctor said he was seizing because his balance was out of whack. I told her he was on the BML and had fruits and veggies every night. She said, but does he eat all of them or just what he wants. I told her I put it in the cage and all of them eat the food. I told her I also gave him a pinky the day before. She said that apparently, he was not eating the BML with his vitamins and was only eating what he liked and when he ate the pinky, it through his whole body out of whack and it drained him and he started seizing. So just FYI to everyone, it is okay to feed pinkies, just make sure they are eating all of their BML. She told me to let my BML thaw for a few minutes and then put it all over the veggies, that way they have got to eat the BML to get to the other stuff. I did that last night with my other babies and sure enough, they ate everything. But my heart is just breaking over sydney, I really miss him. I remember when he was a baby and I wasn't sure if he was going to make it because his sister didn't make it.

Deanna, as you know, I am so grieved by lil Sydney's death. I am just so sorry. I hope you get more answers from the vet tomorrow. I sure wish I knew what to say to make things better, but I know it's not possible. Just know I'm grieving for my great-grandson, as are you. []http://www.sugarglider.net/images/Lucy/Image3.gif[/]

I am so sorry for his death for your sake. I am not sure I would agree with the diagnosis. I sold a glider recently that contracted Morganella. Who ever heard of it? It is an opportunist bacteria that effects gliders who have low immune systems due to stress, being taken different places before the glider is bonded, only eating BML and no fruits and veggies(poor balanced diet), owner playing with the glider too long(three hours straight), not allowing it to rest in between playtimes. It seized just as yours did and died a few minutes later. The bacteria affects the liver causing it to look fibrosis or some type of fibroids on the liver. The glider showed no other symptoms. Naomi feeds pinkies all the time and one night on the pinkies would not be enough to throw everything out of wack. Hopefully none of your other gliders will get this. Mice can also carry samenella, but don't know if that would cause a seizure. Seizures can be caused by things happening to the body over a period of time, not just the day before the seizure. Amonia can built up in the liver if protein is not broken down. It is like this explosion of amonia in their poor little bodies and the seizures begin. Again, I am so sorry, as he was your favorite and I know that can be really heart breaking. It is good that you went to the vet immediately as you did all you could do.

Thank you everyone. I am now more confused than before and more worried about my others. All four of them are on me now sleeping. They all seem healthy and fine. I just really wish I knew what really happened to lil sydney.

Deanna, it's possible your vet has him refrigerated. Why don't you call in the morning and see if a necropsy is still possible? It might not be, but it might still be possible to find out for sure.

There have been an increasing number of gliders in recent months (that we've been hearing about) who have died after seizing. While seizing could be a symptom of many things, it's just not clear what caused the death without the pathology labs and/or necropsy. So I'm hoping that's still possible. If they can't do it, I would rest easier if I knew the others checked out okay and didn't have a bacterial condition (Sheila talked about two, but there are many). I hope you can find out without having to have all your gliders tested, but why don't we see what tomorrow brings?

I'm just so sad with you about this --

I think you are right. I will call my vet first thing and see. How long will it take? If it takes too long, I think I will go ahead and have my other babies checked out just to be on the safe side. I can't handle this again.

Ok, here is exactly what the vet said yesterday, I am getting this from my husband. I was too upset to really listen yesterday. She said that pinkies were very high in phosphorous and low in calcium, so the phosphorous absorbs the other nutrients especially the calcium and liquid (sugars), causing the glider to dehydrate and to go extremely low on calcium. Both of these causes seizures. Now new glider members please don't panic, I am just telling Lucy, Bourboun and the other great people that have made comments and concerns regarding lil sydney, what the vet said.

?? The only websites I could find with pinkies and calcium:phosphorous ratios rate the ratio as about 1:1. I'm not sure those ratios are accurate, though, since I just got them from personal websites. If it IS a 1:1 ratio, that wouldn't account for what happened, I don't think. ????

I did contact drrosebud, also concerned about the diagnosis, but only because I was concerned for her remaining gliders, although yes bacteria and viral infections is and has been a recent concern and cause, there is also the possibility of a head injury, as he was only 6 months oop. I believe at this time her concerns she has voiced to her vet, and was and still may be discussed in the future. She had stated that she is going to move some things around in the cage which may or may not have been an issue. but once the vet have done their exam the chances of retaining the cadavier is slim to nil. at this time drrosebud needs to find peace in her heart as she is feeling a lot of pain due to his loss.

As for the pinkys ratios they differ depending on age and size rats or mice. yes sometimes they can be very inverse. but also keep in mind, she had also stated that it is a possibility that he wasn't eating the BML at all, filling up on the pinkies. which in itself may still be a factor. so many people feel they need to add that extra protein, with the BML and they don't in fact the extra protein as you had seen may also have a poor ca:ph ratio attached to it. It is still not known whether or not the extra protein may cause problems in itself.

again my prayers are with you. May you find peace within your own heart.

My suggestion is....have the other gliders checked out by a vet...it is possible it could be bacterial or protozoa related problem. I know I lost a female two years ago...had seizues and befor I could even call the vet she died in my hands. Two days later...I took the remaining family into the vet's office to have them checked out...found Geridia in the Male but not the babies. Female...necropsy was done but it was inconclusive. I had to treat all of my gliders....five days on five days off...for three rounds and I have not had it since. Anyway the point is....have the others vet checked to be safe.

The one glider who passed...may have died from a bacterial or protozoa infection and the calcium deficency could have been secondary since we know when a glider is severly ill it may not show any signs of impending problems until it is too late. It's system is depleted of necessary calcium from the illness. Thus the seizuring and dehydration is secondary as well as the lack of calcium but to a vet who is inexperienced...he may have totally missed the boat. I have seen this too often with vets who lack experience.

Please...take the other gliders to the vet and have a simple fecal smear done. If nothing else...take stool samples from each glider and mark on the plastic baggies who they belong to. If anything is found...treat all the gliders due to possible cross contamination.

Deanna, I'm so sorry about little Sydney. Sending you glider hugs and praying for you to find peace in your heart. Sweetie, sometimes things happen for no reason other than that He needs them elsewhere. I think that has to be the hardest to accept. I know you well enough to know that you did all you possibly could do to take care of him and ensure his good health, that's all you can do. The rest is up to a much higher power than us! I know that I would trust you with any of my gliders ANYTIME!!! And I don't trust many with them! Sydney will always have a super special place in your heart, remember the good times and he will always be with you. He is now waiting for you over the rainbow bridge.
Please let us know what happens with the others, that they all check out ok! You are in my prayers!
Chey

Thank you so much, Chey, Lucy, Bourbon and Judie. I am taking my gliders to get checked out or at least one of their samples. I really want to thank all of you for your help. I will let you know what the vet says, and pray that there is nothing in my other gliders.
Oh and Chey, thank you for the kind words, that meant alot to me.

I'm so sorry to hear that, dsrosebud ...I can just imagine what a panic you must be experiencing at this moment in time ...Although I've never experienced anything like this, I dread the thought of it...Would hate to lose even one of my angels let alone have the possibility of losing more...Hope all is well with the rest of your crew and that your vet gets to the root of the cause...

My husband picked up lil sydney's body lastnight. The vet said couldn't do a necropsy, I don't know if it was too late or what, but she did run tests on Bacteria and it was not that and she was positive it was not a head injury. She said that she went over the body thoroughly. I am glad that I have him back and I know that he is in a good place now.

Thank you, I know he is in a good place. The bad thing is that I always call my other glider by his name on accident. I have got to stop that.
