Probably a dumb question but can you feed gliders nightcrawlers? I have not done so but was wondering, because of nightcrawlers being so high in protien. I do not know if they are harmfull to a glider for a snack.

I have been thinking about this for a few hours and I personally would not feed them. The reason is because you never know what type of dirt thye have been crawling around in.... if it has been sprayed with some type of chemicals for what ever reason. Also not to mention...how gross!!! !!
I don't know if that is the right answer or not. I have never been asked thta before.

I'm kinda with sil on this one. I mainly have a hard time getting past the gross factor. Also, nightcrawlers aren't insects, and I've always heard of feeding insects rather than just any bug.

I suppose you could get around the problem of what they've been crawling in/eating by knowing your source (i.e. your own organic compost bin vs some farmers back 40) but I just don't know why you'd want to feed them. Ick!

The reason is we go fishing all the time so we have them handy Plus, I don't grose out by worms. I have 2 pythons so a little worm does not bother me lol. They do not sell meal worms in my area only beemoths (waxworms) and crickets (my babies do not like crickets). My little girl is expecting and I wanted to get her some high protien food. Oh well, I am going to buy some mealworms off the internet. Thank you for trying to help me out you guys have been great:)

*shudders* OMG worms... *shudders again keeping from screaming like a girl*

*rubs temples repeating: "They're one of God's creatures, too... They're one of God's creatures, too..."*

If they're earthworms from outdoors then I'd really reccommend against feeding them to the gliders. If you aren't worried about pesticides infecting land and air organisms, you should really be concerned with pesticides and subterranean organisms, like worms, because much of the run-off pesticides of course ends up in the soil systems, not to mention the worms feed on decaying plant matter (e.g. freshly clipped grass on a golf field which is regularly sprayed). Also, parasites like nematodes are rampant in wild earthworms.

If they're from a tackle shop, there's always that possibility that they may be treated with a variety of things (some are even treated with dyes and the stuff). It's really hard to say, because I've fed tackle shop worms to many of my reptiles and amphibians. For some reason I'm reluctant to give them to my gliders, though.

If you're looking for a high protein snack for your little one, why not try pinkie mice?

Oh Mikey... Way to make a gross situation even grosser. *Imagining first an icky worm... Then a poor little pinky.*

Okay, I'm over it now... I work with them and kiss them b/c I think they're so darn cute! I hate when I have to sell them to people. I guess it's the cycle of life...

LOL I'm done now.

they usually eat EVERYTHING. Sometimes you might find a bone, but very rare. I feed frozen then you don't hear the poor baby crying

Oh my bad, Christinahan619... *sings* "The Ciiiircle of Liiiiiiifeee.... and it mooooves us alllll.... through dispaaaaiiiir and hooooopppeee... through faith and loooooooove..."

Oh, another thing I forgot to mention about wild nightcrawlers is regarding the pesticide issue.

An earthworm's skin is covered in mucous to allow for respiration through their skin (yes, they breath through their skin) and to allow for the facilitated passage of materials like water and such in and out of the worm's body. This makes them more prone to absorbing pesticidal compounds through any soil-bound pesticide run-off than any land creature, for instance.

My good Lord, have you seen the size of the giant earthworms in Australia?! They're horrifically huge! *shudders* Now they should eat THOSE on Fear Factor!!!
