First I would like to reply to KarenE's post:
According to the person I purchased Riker from on February 16, he was 8 weeks OOP at that time, so is 11 weeks OOP now. I have had him for just over 3 weeks. He was purchased at the Salt Lake City Gun Show from Sandra Martinez of Westwind Critters in Sandy, Utah. There have been no changes in the house at all, and no sprays of any kind used. Frankly, I wouldn't buy my next one from her, and would not recommend them to anyone. I think our next one will come from Suncoast.
We took Riker to a 24 hour veterinary hospital recommended by the Exotic animal vet that will be our regular vet. They have worked with other gliders.
Riker weighed in at 40 grams, and had no signs of any kind of respiratory problems. He was kind enough to provide us a fecal sample on the exam table upon arrival, and we asked that they perform a fecal smear, which they did. It showed a slightly elevated bacteria level. He received 3 injections: 1. subcutaneous fluid w/dextrose 2. an Anrofloxacin antibiotic 3. a calcium injection.
We also have a Trimethoprim-Sulfa Elixir antibiotic to be injected twice daily @ .02cc for about 3 days.
The vet could not pinpoint the cause of his illness. Speculations mentioned were meningitis, hypoglycemia, or an infection. He seemed to think, after the tests, that infection was most likely.
Anyway, he is home-still not acting quite right, but eating and drinking, and his diarrhea has stopped. Time will tell, I suppose. I am extremely worried, and intend to stay up with him all night so I know if a problem develops.
I want to thank everyone for their incredible support and advice. We did get pedialyte down him, and I think that's what kept him going until we got to the vet. I was so panicked I don't think I would have even thought of it, so I send a sincere thanks for that advice. I am so grateful for this site and all the great people.

Jen, I'm glad that Riker is doing a little better. Please stay positive...I know it's hard.

We're all here praying for his full recovery. Remember to take care of yourself as well. He needs you!

[:"brown"] I would continue to give him fluids with pedilyte diluted with juice as much as possible. Keep him warm. Make sure he is eatin his BML. If his diarreah returns...I would take him back to the vet in the morning to be sure he is well hydrated and is not exhibiting secondary problems such as HLP due to nutrients not being able to be asorbed in his system. Ask for a med to help tighten up his stool if the diarreah is watery.

Some gliders when going to a new home do become stressed. Stress then causes the normal flora in their tummy and gut to sort of go out of control...and now a normal bacteria has become a nasty one. This in no way reflects on the breeder. However, a good breeder should always discuss how and what to look for if a glider should become ill from stress. Stress related illness can hit a baby glider within a few days to a few weeks after he has gone to his new home.

Sending prayers for a speedy recovery. [/]

We're giving him his pedialyte & juice mix every hour. He drinks about 1cc or so each time. And we're keeping him warm. His shaking is still bad enough he has trouble eating and drinking on his own, so we are hand-feeding him. I am frantically worried, but cruising around GC is helping me keep it under control. They gave him a shot of Calcium as well as the dextrose solution at the vet's. Hopefully that will keep him until he can eat again on his own. The continuing shaking has me really worried, though. Any thoughts on what could have triggered this, other than stress? Or could all this really be stress related? I feel terrible.
Also-do you think I should feed him his BML with a syringe? His head and 'hands' are shaking so bad he's having a hard time trying to eat.

[:"brown"] The shaking could be from being calcium deficent which is secondary to his infection. Or he could be shaking because he is cold from being dehydrated.

Tomorrow when you take your glider back to the vet...might ask about some BenBac...which will help replace some of the natural flora in his tummy. I would ask also for some liquid calcium to give for seven days or so. If your glider is still dehydrated...he will need another sub q injection. If dehydration is going to be a problem for a few more days...suggest you have the vet teach you how to give the fluids at home this way. Fluids given sub q at home every three to four hours can substain a glider till he is able to eat and drink on his own. Make sure it is D5w to keep his blood sugar level. I would also ask for another fecal...just to be sure something was not missed by the first one. Also, if the diarreah is severe...an anti diarreaha med can be given so ask your vet for it if one is needed.

For now keep him hydrated, and warm and preferably in his pouch tucked under your shirt. This is the best way to warm a cold glider.[/]

[:"brown"]And yes, if you can hand feed him his BML with a syringe by all means do so. Feed him as much as he will eat. May have to do this every hour or so in order to get enough down him. And by all means...Keep Him Warm. [/]

It sounds like the vet is knowledgeable and has really helped. Please keep us updated as we continue to pray for Riker! The good thing about bacterial infections is that they can be cured if found quickly, and it sounds like you did that

Jen,

How is Riker doing this evening? I am so sorry you have to go though this but it seems that you & your vet were able to catch it early, which is always a good thing. I will be keeping you and Riker in my thoughts and wishing for a speedy recovery.

Thank you

Riker is still holding on this evening. Continuing to give him fluids and food every hour by syringe. He has eaten a small amount on his own, but not nearly enough to eliminate the syringe feeding. He is still shaking alot, but today he is actually sleeping (and when he falls good and asleep he hardly shakes, if at all). Last night and yesterday he was shaking so badly he didn't sleep at all, I don't think he could. I know he needs it to get well. I secured a ride and am taking him to the exotic vet in the AM. His appointment is for 10. Despite some reduction in his shaking since pre-vet yesterday, he is still an extremely sick little glider
He has been SOOOoooo good about the syringe feedings, too. He is a little fighter!
Something is still very wrong, though. I'm going to ask that the vet do another fecal smear, a urine analysis, and blood tests if necc. I can say his dehydration is not nearly as bad as it was. His skin doesn't snap back as fast as I'd like, but it goes back now. His stools are looking much more normal also. I need to say: last night and today are the first times Riker has ever barked. It was the coolest noise! I don't know why he chose now-it made me cry to think I might never hear his bark again soon if things don't go well. The picture on the main page did the same thing to me when I saw it-Riker LOVES to climb upside-down.
In any case, I intend to ask the vet for sub-q fluid injections for at home based on your suggestions, as well as any others and/or supplements as necessary. I took printouts of the posts to the vet with me, and intend to do so tomorrow, also. I'll let you know how things go in a new post when we get home from the vet (a 100 mile round trip). I WILL NOT GIVE UP! He is such a sweet little glider and doesn't deserve this. Thanks to everyone again for all your help, advice, and support! You have no idea how much it means to us.

Praying for Riker. He's sure a fighter! It sounds like things are a little better and that you're doing what you can -- it will be good to hear what the exotic vet has to say tomorrow. Be strong and of good courage!
