ok, this may have been covered, but I havent seen it..so I thought I would ask.

Recently, I adopted another glider from a very nice lady here in town..he seems to be quite healthy, very active, and well tempered..however only issue..he absolutely reeks!!

I don't think I have ever smelled anything so horrible in my life. The first few days we had the cage, I kept trying to figur eout if it was the cage or him..it's him...I just want to give him a bath, but I know that isn't healthy.

My husband and I discussed it, from all the research we have done in the last year, and we think it's because of his poor diet he was on...when we got him, there was a bag of trail mix, and both his water bottles only had human gatorade and water mixed. I couldn't believe he was still alive if that's waht they were feeding him his entire life of 7 months. The family was very nice, and I honestly think they just didn't know any better. They were given a lot of incorrect info when they got him, so I can't fault them. And the lady had just begun looking online I do believe for info.

However, my dilema, is that yes, I do expect some smell, after all he is a little boy...but he has an entire room in my home reeking, he can not stay if this continues.

I have both him and my little girl on the sun coast diet, which seems to be something he never had..he literally has devored his food every night, like he was starving and never seen fruit, veggies and meal worms before.

Do you all think once he has been on the proper diet for a while, the stinch will go away?at least some. Again, this is not a typical urine smell, this is awful, worst than any hamsters I ever had. He does not have a UTI, evidently they went to the vet recently, for a check up and he was fine. But I wonder if the vet, realized he wasn't supposed to emall this bad.

giving him a healthy diet should help, another thing to consider is getting him neutered. Neutering him will help with the smell a lot!

Yes. A proven diet will help reduce the odor. If he is not neutered, having that done will help too.

Is it also his poop and urine that smells? I noticed jay & silent bob had smelly poop when they came here...but now they are on a better diet, it's gone away...except for the musky smell intact males will have. And even that's not overpowering anymore.

I don't know much about the suncoast diet, but I have read here that the hpw diet makes them smell a lot more "sweeter" plus it does wonders for their fur.

Since you just got him, make sure you get him to an exotic animal vet for a wellness check up, just to make sure everything is ok.

Other than the odor...this little one sounds like he's in much better hands with you!! Fantastic! smile

sounds like he is an intact male and even on a great diet they will mark and try to stink up the place.
I think if he is neutered you will be amazed at the difference.

I agree- it does take a while- maybe a month for the odor to change after changing to an approved diet. An air purifer with a HEPA filter for the room does wonders! (non- ionized of course). Kudos for taking in the little guy. It's ashame so much bad information is given as it benefits no one and only hurts the animal.

I'm am surprised because after my boys were neutered you can't smell them at all. They don't mark everything now so I can't tell any difference in smell between them and my female. I assumed all neuters would have similar effects regarding smell.

I can speak from experience, with time on a good diet, that stench will leave, but it can take a little while, especially if they were on a very bad diet for a long time. Of all my gliders, Molly and Oliver were definitely the stinkiest and took the longest to loose that. (They lived on hedgehog food, parrot seed and Quiko pellets...can we say STINKY!) In the meantime, changing his stuff out and washing it will help (the smell sticks in the fabric). It is not the same as the 'marking' smell, either. Give him time, he will get better.

outnumbered, has he been seen by a vet? A neutered male should not stink.

SL, Elimina is a spray that goes onto the food and is suppose to reduce the odor of their waste. I've never used it, but I know several do.
But first thing is first and that's vet check and diet change and time to adjust.

a few other things you need to consider..

The type of cage, how often it is cleaned (more is NOT better), air circulation in the room is a must and if he has reached maturity and has the scent of females around, or other un-neutered males. If he is old enough to breed and has a female with him, she could be with joey and he is over marking the joey..

A change of cage, environment and room mates also can attribute to it.

Lots of things can attribute to bad smells on gliders, diet is usually one of the last things I look at.

odor eliminators such as elimina and febreeze hides and covers up the real causes behind the smells.

I only said about cleaning more in the beginning. I know that goes against what you should normally do. But with gliders that just stink from diet, you are smelling that smell more than the smell from the marking. It is what I did with every one of the ones that came here stinky from a bad diet and for me, it worked well and they seemed to always chose the 'clean' pouch.

Thank you everyone! I do not know what Lilly was on before I got her...She has been on HPW since the beginning of February. Duke I got from Peggy so I know he has always been on HPW. He was neutered in April, I am a clean freak and I have been trying to go a few weeks between cleaning so that they do not over mark. Lilly is young and has never had a joey, Duke is the first glider I put her with and I did not put them together until after he was neutered so I don't think we can have a joey in the pouch. My son does have a family of gliders now...his female had a baby come out of pouch about a week ago. We had his male neutered at the same time we had Duke neutered and his seem to smell better. His gliders are upstairs and mine are down. I use carefresh on top of a puppy pad with some baking soda underneath. They are in a large room, in a hex cage. When they poop on me it is discusting...the smell that is...my husband puts up with my babies, he secretly loves them, but the smell is getting to him and me...I am super nose! I do think in the beginning I was over cleaning but now I try to wait two weeks at a time and in just a few days they have the cage smelly again!

I piece clean. I will take the laundry(all fleece pouches or toys) out and put in clean one week and clean the cage the next. I do not ever use anything scented in their area as I feel they want it to smell like theirs, even if I can't smell it they can.
My cages are in the den which is the heart of our home and if they smell my sons or my mom will gladly tell me.
I wipe with clorox wipes every am and change drop pan liner evry other day.

Thank you, I keep thinking that is what I will do but when I start to clean out one thing I end up doing a total clean because I think it stinks and why waste my time only cleaning one part of the stink. I use a cleaner that I orderd online that peggy recommended. You dilute it and then spray it on, leave it for 10 minutes and then rinse. I do not think they can smell it but maybe so. It is a vet cleaner/disinfectant. I will try changing the pan liner every other day and wiping with clorox wipes. It takes a lot to change the litter in my pans, I have a hex cage to there are two large litter pans. I can not reach all of the inside of the cage because of the shape...that is why I like to spray it down and hose it off! I did buy some of the natures miracle for litter, I will try that also. If it continues I will take them in for some tests.

SL if you have litter in there you can probably go longer in between, you'll notice when it is getting dirty.

I change mine every other day because all I have in the drop pan is a fleece liner and they get dirty pretty quick.

If your saying the stools itself is real smelly, then I would seriously do a vet visit, giardia as well as other parasites or bacterial issues can cause smelly stools.

also stress poo is very smelly, but that is far more obvious when they are out of cage,

Ok, maybe it is stress poo that I think smells so bad? I am really bonded with lilly and her poo stinks, stinks, stinks! When I get her out, I usually stimulate her with a kleenex and she goes potty and poo sometimes. I do this before I put her in my bra. She will come running out of my bra if she has been in there for several hours and I know she needs to go. She usually goes before I can get a tissue...I guess she has held it too long and has to go now! She bolts out of my bra like she is being chased by a cat! When I stimulate her or she bolts out of my bra her poo stinks! I think Duke is still not totally bonded but he is happy to see me, comes out of pouch, crawls on my hand, and will get in my bra with lilly. I haven't tried putting him in there alone yet. When he poos I am sure he is still a little stressed since we are not as bonded...I have only had him a few months. His poo stinks to high heaven too! So..I wonder if it is just stress or something is wrong? I will take them in for a fecal smear to make sure! Is there anything else I shouldhave checked? Thanks in advance for all the help! I couldn't do this alone! You know what they say...it takes a village!

OK...cleaned pouches toys and changed the litter to the back to nature. I have to say the back to nature is not as cute as the pink care fresh...I hope the difference in smell makes up for the lack of cuteness! I did not wash down the cage and I put a few things back in the cage that had their smell on it...suggestions?
