Does anyone use puppy pads? #54555

I work at a pet store and saw puppy pads. I was wondering if I could line the bottom of the cage with it instead of using CareFresh or aspen bedding. I figure it's easier for me to clean in such a large cage. Any suggestions would be great and why or why not I should or should not use them. Thanks ahead of time! :o)

Yes, lots of people use them, if you want to it would be fine to use.

We use people pads from Wal-Mart,never use any wood, pine or cat litter because, just the fumes of the pine will kill or make the glider very sick. You can get the pads in the Depends section of Wal-Mart near the Pharmacy.

I'm thinking of using puppy pads, or maybe like someone suggested use puppy pads and then kaytee over it. I hear it REALLY cuts down on the smell. But then I don't know, I haven't tried it yet. I never thought of using people pads! Um, do they work better than puppy pads? Thanks for posting this Tina--I was wondering myself

YAY for puppy pads! I've never heard of the human ones. How big are they??? They might work better since I have a larger cage and larger drop tray...

I'm going to get some tomorrow. I'll let you know how they work Ariana. :o)

Take care everyone!

You can get oversized puppy pads at Walmart. I use them. What is this Kaytee stuff you mentioned?

I think Kaytee is the brand that she is talking about. Kaytee also makes bedding. Kaytee makes aspen bedding, but also makes cedar and pine. Ariana, make sure that you are not using pine and or cedar as they are harmful to their respitory system. Make sure it is aspen only. :o)

Definitely not! I read a post made by GunterVanWalstein called "bedding types" sorry i don't know how to make a link..but it talked all about the safe beddings and bad beddings. Sorry BHBribbit--I didn't word that right, I meant Kaytee Aspen Bedding. Boy not too bright 'm I? LOL Tina, I can just imagine myself and my mom shopping for people pads....my mom isn't too subtle lol. What a fun ride that would be!! But hey, thanks for trying them out--I'd love to know how they work. I hear a lot of people are using just pieces of fleece on the bottom of their cage, but I dunno if that would cut down on the smell any... Who knows? It probably won't be as irritating as shavings lol. I don't know....if you use shavings and your cage doesn't have a screen over a tray, could your gliders get respiratory problems just from all of the dust?? Thats something to think about. Hmmmmm....

I saw some sort of pad actually aimed at small animals in the pet section at Walmart the other day. I think it had a picture of a hamster on the front. I don't know how they compare to puppy pads. I think Roger was afraid I would start throwing bird toys in the cart, and steered me pass, before I got a better look.

I know exactly what you are talking about. The only bad thing I caught about it is, is that it only measures 1.5 x 2 ft and my cage is easily double to triple that size on the drop tray alone. It cost $3.96 or something for 7 of them, and I thought it might work as well. It might be good for those of you who have smaller cages.

The next time I go to Wal-Mart, I will get the name and brand as well as the cost so you all can check it out as well.

If your Wal-Mart has a small animal section, check the shelf where the food bowls are. They should be right around there. My Super Wal-Mart had it on the top shelf. :o)

A question for those of you who use puppy pads: How often do you clean them out a week?

I do a thorough clean once a week including the bedding, but didn't know if puppy pads would be different.

I use puppy pads in my two four foot cages because the tray is very shallow. Debrie is shaken daily from them. Pads themselves are thrown out once a week.

Do you have other bedding with them? I was thinking about just having puppy pads for easier cleaning.

Wow! Only once a week! How do they work with the smell? Is there a certain brand of puppy pads you think work better? I only saw one pack at the walmart near me and they were a pack of 14 for $20.00!

When done as Judie is speaking of, shaking them off daily, there is no smell at all. Puppy pads have baking soda in them which helps control odor anyway. When one does not clean the trays daily and start talking about smell, 8 out of 10 times it is actually the food pieces that are in the tray that you wind up smelling and not the actual glider smell.

Thanks everyone! I'm going to purchase those for sure now for the large cage I have. Cleaning it is one heck of a chore. LOL

Thank you Peggy! I'll be getting my 2 babies soon, and I'll be going out for some finishing-touches-shopping. I'm so excited though! I'll have to look around for the best deal on puppy pads though, or is 14 for $20.00 the regular price?!

Me too Tina! I don't think I wanna go thru the hassle of shavings anyways. Puppy pads sound great! Thanks all

I also use the puppy pads and replace them once a week. I was using the care fresh on top, but I smelled the pee alot more that way. Also, with the puppy pads, I can see their poop and make sure it is not runny. I wipe down the whole tray with clorox wipes before I replace with new ones. I also wipe down the cage every other day or so and I haven't had a smell problem yet. The whole cage gets a complete wash once a month. I've only had them 5 weeks and so far this has worked for me. I have a very sensitive nose. I wash their pouches every week making sure I leave one in there with their smell, then the following week I'll wash that one. So they stay there two weeks.

ok, i noticed that most all the puppy pads I've seen are "treated to attract your pup" with pheremones. Is this harmful to the gliders?? Anyone?
