How could a vet act that way. I swear it is just simpler for them to give up then to put forth the effort to help a sm.
I am so glad the vet I finally found didn't give up on Mimzy. Even though she passed I know that we both did everything we could to help her heal. WE didn't give up on her.

This just so breaks my heart and makes me miss Mimzy all over again. You have vets like this that just give up.. And you just think it's not fair that we didn't...

Hopefully the owner will register and give us an update. I am now moving this thread to Health & Hygiene.

oh this is just terrible. This is definitely a lesson for me when I need to take Kioshi to a vet. I would never let some ignorant vet tell me that he that he knows more than me or one of us. I would DEFINITELY LOVE to have a number for a consult if I ever need one I don't care if it is out of state! I'll only take the best for my Kio...as I'm sure all of your would for your precious babies.

I know that there is an occasional debate about well visits but I think this reinforces the need to have a vet BEFORE you need it.
I feel for this poor little one.

All I can say is I heart my vet!!

Trigger, actually in Houston, you have some excellent knowledgeable vets, especially in the SM areas.

as for vet names and such, as Ellen said we are all working on this as we speak. I am going to try to get a list of various vets in many areas that not only do SM's, but also some of the very specialized areas, with of course the help of many others. Mary especially.

Maybe if we can get this list together as well as a list of resources for some of the extensive emergency's commonly posted here. At least at the bare minimum that the mods could post or send to others in PM's that could direct them for more help.

the people with SM problems, needs to contact one of the SMgroup before they go to the vet, so they are armed with info, including vet resources for their vets to contact.

The SM's sadly are cases that the vets have limited knowledge and really need the resources that we can provide, as well as instructions regarding their care while waiting for the vet. So in these cases just sending them to the vet asap, is not really helping much without the info to go with them.

All of us are sickened over what has happened here. and I am kicking myself in the butt wondering what more I could have done.

Soooo. getting with Ellen and hopefully being able to build a resource center for the mods, Mary and I also are talking to Karen Milas from TGI about getting the many vets that have experience with the SM's of various degrees of injury to get together to do a peer review journal about the self mutilators, their various causes and the treatments, after care and such, at least that way we can get the new info out to the vets so they too can learn that the gliders no longer have to die. We also are going to aggressively work on the SM website, in order to be sure we have everything covered, expanding to include hair pulling, after neuter injuries as well as various other injury's that may cause a glider to chew itself.

There will also be an Info packet available at the SGGA and hopefully be able to get it together for the Midwest gathering, so that at the gatherings they too can be passed out, so that even if you don't know anything about SM's and other serious issues, that at the minimum you will be able to get them to the right people for help. each person needs to take the packet of info to their vet as well, and have it placed into their gliders folder, just in case the vet needs it.

With Sm's the reason that this is so important, is because varying degrees of injury require different handling at the beginning, some may think that fur pulling is sm, or that a glider chewing after a neuter, although we work with all of these, the care and treatments may be different.

angelic4296- the best we can do is to be sure you know who to contact, as well as make sure you have the link for the SM website, where the e-collar plans are. which BeckiT has posted above. Know what signs to look for prior to them doing damage and KNOW how to put an e-collar on.

I feel in my heart the biggest problem here was us not doing more to get the info out there so the vet was left with no new info (relying on old..)

We have made great strides, and many vets as well as owners have been educated in this area, but as we seen today, there are many more that needs it as well.

I do want to say thank you to the first few people that posted. Each of you said to Get the glider in an ecollar and then to the vet.

This is excellent. It used to be the first response was to get the glider to a vet. The ecollar is so vital to prevent the damage from getting worse.

Now though we need to ask for the advice to be...

1. Get the glider in an ecollar. The directions can be found HERE with photos HERE Once the ecollar is on, the glider has a little more time. This time can be so critical. If you don't have an ecollar or know how to use one, CALL Mary, Bourbon, Jen or someone with experience to help walk you through it. You can always wrap them in fleece (like a burrito) to keep them from doing more damage while you are working on the ecollar.

2. Go to the SM Site and get the contact info and CALL one of the SM people. Talk to Mary, Bourbon or Jen (Xfilefan) before you head to the vet if posible, so they can tell you what steps need to be done first. They have the experience to assess the situation and know what steps need to be taken.

3. Get to the vet. Take the info Mary, Bourbon Jen gives you with you as well as then names and phone numbers of consulting vets that have the experience dealing with SM's.

While fixing the damage is important, the root or reason the glider sm'd to begin with has to be addressed or the glider will continue to sm. Certain tests need to be done to determine the cause. Some of these tests, such as the culture and sensitivity tests have to be done BEFORE any antibiotics are given or the test results won't be accurate.

Thanks T

as for the e-collar, we are trying very hard at the local gatherings as well as the SGGA, to teach as many as we can on how to put a collar on, If you have not been able to be a part of it, with one of us on the phone, we can help walk you through it, it will save you loads of time and frustration.

Through the various gatherings we are getting pictures of the various stages, a compilation of those pics will be placed on the SM site, as well as possible a video to help as well.

once the e-collar is on and secure, it may buy you more time to compose yourself, and get the info together that you will need to give to your vet.

for those of you that haven't yet read the sticky in health and hygiene above, please read it, it is titled "will your glider self mutilate" please,

Please prepare your self, again if not to help yourself, maybe to help someone else. Learn the warning signs, know where to find the link for the e-collars, learn the link for the emergency sm contacts

I am so sorry for your loss. Our members here try VERY hard to help gliders - and unfortunately many have learned their knowledge the hard way.
