Suz, I'll ask, thanks. Though with the location, I don't think bothering it is an issue, but regardless. I'm out of ideas.

Here's the pic from late yesterday afternoon:

Judie,
Yah that's pretty much what she did. Except for the drainage.
Now you got me concerned. I hope she will be ok. It is looking SO much better already and she just did it yesterday. So I have high hopes for everything going well.

Jen,
Ask your vet about Scarlet Oil. One of my vets had me use it on a NASTY wound on one of my gliders neck and it worked well and did not harm him.

Ozzi, I thank you for the advice, but am really uncomfortable with that product on anything smaller than a cat, for a number of reasons. So is my vet.

Sorry for the delay on the update-I got the super form of the last flu I had, plus migraines, and was literally bedridden for 3 days (then playing catch up) frown We did get to the vet (one of the SHORTEST visits I've ever had, and why is it I always have to go down there in a blizzard? shakehead )

The vet still thinks this will close. She approved my use of Betadine, which IS helping, and also suggested diluted hydrogen peroxide, which I will likely begin adding to it tonight. It's not closed but not looking nearly as bad as it was, or as wet. She still gets the Silvodine on top of it, and will be on the Clindamycin for a further two weeks or so.

AND her fur in general is looking a bit better, which means she's feeling a little better and grooming at least some-she wasn't-she looked absolutely awful prior to this last visit. frown

Here's some pics...you can tell it's not nearly as wet looking, no infection now, and white, healthy SKIN showing through, instead of a pussy pit, even though it's going to take more time for it to heal over. The last two are after I put the Silvodine on (which is why it's white there) while she is enjoying her after meds mealies. She's a lonely girl though, and I feel so bad for her. frown Still need to find a potential cage mate for when she's better. Anyway, here's this morning's pics:

Jen, my heart goes out to you! hug2 Her wound right now looks like Minka's did about 10 days ago...I can see "granular tissue" starting to form (fancy words for "a scab") from the pictures & I'm going to be VERY HOPEFUL that the infection will stay away!

Odd that you should mention your hesitation about Scarlet Oil on anything smaller than a cat...the bottle specifically says 'DO NOT USE ON CATS' (I have a bottle I picked up in Tennessee & was tempted to use on Minka...but didn't.) While it may have wonderful "healing" properties, I'm just a bit nervous about using something that isn't tried & true in SEVERAL situations.

Scarlet Oil is normally used on much larger animals, horses, cattle-and it's fallen out of favor with all but the older generation of large animal vets. Cats and dogs would probably be able to handle a diluted, lite amount PROVIDED it's not ingested. Something smaller than a dog/cat I wouldn't even try-gliders have been proven to be so sensitive to such small amounts of toxins, I don't feel it's safe at all. And no way to know what long term effects may show up, like liver damage, months or longer down the road.

Jen, Myst is looking better and better! I hope that things will heal up soon for her so that she can have a little friend. Thanks for the update, I've been wondering how she was doing, as well as you. I'm sorry to hear that you picked up that horrid flu! hug2 Hope your feeling better!

I had to trust my vet on that one. 10 different vets will probably give 10 different answers, so it seems confused
The Scarlet oil, and it might have been diluted?, worked well with no ill affects. I used it sparingly and applied it with a Q-tip so there was not a lot of extra oil anywhere except on the wound.

Maybe its different for animals but I have been a wound care nurse and learned the newest scenario is Betadine and Hydrogen Peroxide kill healthy bloodcells. The best thing to flush a wound with is normal saline. The deal with scarlett oil is it does not know the bad tissue from the good tissue. On a person I would be putting Bactroban ointment on a wound like that???? I dont know how things work with animals just throwing that stuff out there just in case it might help. Hope that nasty wound gets better soon!!
