Hello everyone, I just got home from checking on Val & Jacki Chan & Sassy. Jacki was asleep when I arrived, so Val & I visited for awhile. Then Jacki decided to wake up so I gave him a couple of yoggies and he loved them. He was such a good boy. He had to come out and play and boy can that little boy move. He was everywhere in just two seconds. He looked and was acting great. He and Sassy had to have a few extra minutes out for playtime & exploring times, then Jacki went back to bed and right back to sleep, so I came home. Val will call me tomorrow to let me know how things are going. We'll try to keep everyone posted on how things are going on this end until she gets home so she can update everyone. Just wanted to post a small update to let everyone know so far so good with Mr Jacki Chan & Val. Keeps those healing prayers heading their way. Anita

Jackie woke up from the surgery, he started biting everything, the doctor, himself, Val. He bit a hole in his patagium, and then went after his foot. Sometimes that can happen post-anesthesia. You have to hold them firmly wrapped until they stop-my Chronos went after his feet. In his case it was about 10 minutes or so before it started to subside. Even if a glider's been under before, the body doesn't always react exactly the same way coming out of it. Unlike us, gliders don't understand or have any concept of "temporary"....odd post anesthesia sensations...pins/needles, numbness, etc., can cause this type of reaction in an animal-fortunately, if they don't do damage, it should stop and not continue. In this case, it might-do use a painkiller until he heals from his self inflicted wounds, and please keep us updated.

Jen, I've had it happen with several of my gliders. What my vets office does is hand them a piece of fruit, like a grape or an apple chunk. The glider will focus on that, and bite that until they calm down. **Note to self, take fruit with to vet visit

I couldn't do anything with Chronos but hold him-he ignored everything else. I've had several go under, some repeatedly, but he was my first to try and damage HIMSELF after - the others would bite ME (or the towel), and that was fine. It also lasted longer than those who didn't. Just be ready with a towel or something if the grape doesn't work.
Any update today?

Val should be on her way home, but she may not update, as she only got a couple of hours of sleep last night. I know he got what ever was irritating it off, and has left it alone since. But his foot is swollen to the size of her pinky finger, so after Coopies little episode, she's really nervous. They went back to the vet this morning. I don't know how that went.

In this case, it might-do use a painkiller until he heals from his self inflicted wounds, and please keep us updated. I wish this had been the case with Jackie Chan.... He did not stop going after his foot until about 11:00 pm.... Once he finally relaxed and ate a bit and then slept for a little bit, he was better. BUT, those first 8 hours were horrible. He refused to sleep or eat or do anything but try to bite his foot. Of course, he wouldn't sleep for me. BUT, Sheila walks in and tells him he is cute and he cuddles right up in a pouch in her arms and goes to sleep! The little stinker. Later, after Anita's visit, Jackie went to sleep for about 2 hours and then woke up as if nothing had ever happened. He was fine until this morning, when I noticed that his foot was VERY swollen. Got him back to the vet. We were able to massage the fluid out and with activity it was subsiding all by itsself. The vet felt that Jackie is just suffering from his nervous system going "haywire" below the break in his spine. It is very difficult to make sense of all that Jackie experiences because his nervous system is no longer coordinated like it should be. Jackie is home now and is settled in a cage next to his Sassy's cage without too much drama. However, he spent most of the day awake and trying to get out of the bonding pouch and to Sassy. This is where most of my concern lies now: not that Jackie is going to continue to attack himself because of pain or phantom pain or pins and needles pain, but that he might begin to SM from the stress of being separated from Sassy. In the past neither of them has done well with being separated. He really is quite a challenge, but you guys he is SUCH a blessing! He is so full of joy and of LIFE and not one of these set backs has affected his disposition at all. He is an inspiration to me.

Val, I am glad to see you and Jacki Chan & Sassy all made it back home safe & sounds. Jacki Chan was such a sweet boy last night I couldn't help but fall in love with him. Val you are such a beautiful person and an extra wonderful mommy, now you make sure Mr. Jacki & Miss Sassy gets their yoggies when they want them. It was wonderful to sit and visit with you and watch Jacki Chan sleep & then Jacki Chan & Sassy play. Please keep us posted on how little Jacki Chan is progressing. Anita

After thinking about it, in his case I have another theory as well.
Before my ALIF (spinal fusion) they tried a procedure called a Rhizotomy-basically burning the nerve ends to stop the pain.
Well....it didn't work. In fact, I ended up in MORE pain than I had before they messed with them (this was at the L5-S1 level)- and it started as soon as the anesthetic wore off. They kept telling me it would stop and it never did. I don't know if what Jackie had was similar, but there IS a possibility it won't do what it's supposed to-just thought you should know if it could apply in his case.

Jen That makes some sense.... I have been saying all day that SOMETHING that they did during that procedure caused him some pain....he was acting as if he was in PAIN in an area of is body that he has hardly felt for the last 9 months.
I guess I will never know.... BUT, he is better now, so I am just going to accept that blessing and keep moving forward with him.

It's possible he felt the same post op agony I did (and it is literally indescribable), but in his case it is going down...watch it doesn't come back, tho. I hope he heals from his wounds good.
You can also try SSD cream (silver sulfazadine-sp? cream)-it really helps regenerate tissue qucker, and won't sting his wounds. It can be used with neosporin or another topical as well. I keep a tub of the stuff in my ER kit ever since Troi cut her hands on the hamster ball when she was about 8 mos. old.

I don't know if human experience translates, but I had no feeling in most of my legs either-but I felt that! ALL I could feel was the transferred nerve pain...nothing at surface level (In fact, my son dropped a full humidifier on my foot and broke it, and I never felt a thing!)-the ONLY feeling I had was directly along the nerve pathways down the legs-and it HURT. I can't imagine a glider going thru what I did, but I would imagine their nerve system works similar to ours.

Well, I do know that he was getting return of sensation in his legs prior to this procedure (even though I was told this could NEVER, EVER happen). I don't know if he was feeling any pain, or if he was just feeling .... I know that he has NEVER acted like he felt pain below the break in his spine until yesterday --- He self mutilated his pom pom, his tail, his butt wound AND his penis ALL without so much as a whimper, a crab, an SM sound or a flinch. I don't think that he felt pain before. But I KNOW he was in some pain yesterday. sounds a lot like what you are describing, huh?

As to the first...numbness is kind of a sensation in itself, especially over a large area...that's hard to describe, but true. It just doesn't feel right when you have feeling to a point-then none. If you've ever had a hand or foot go totally asleep (before sensation returned)-it's similar. You CAN feel it in a way-even though if you then smashed it you wouldn't. And if they did the same thing-those nerves likely would have been on fire. I described it like someone taking hot tongs to mine and twisting. I know in humans burning the nerves (cauterizing) is called a Rhizotomy-why they call it different things in animals is beyond me, but it sounds like the same procedure.

sounds like the same procedure to me too, Jen. His nerves had apparently grown beyond his spine to where his tail would be if he still had a tail. They were continuing to grow and creating a neuropathy of sorts there that was pushing/bulging out. So, every time we closed his butt wound up, the vet believes that the neuropathy would begin to push on that newly closed skin, creating a sensation and/or pain further up the spine where Jackie could feel it. Therefore, Jackie split the wound back open, thus relieving the pressure/sensation. After opening the wound back up, he would never touch it again. So, the feeling was that if they use a laser to essentially vaporize the nerve endings and the neuropathy, then there would be no more growth and no more phantom pain/sensation. Then perhaps we could finally leave the wound closed till it heals. That is what we were going for---- we were all surprised when he woke up and was acting as if he was in pain. Not what I expected at all.

Hoping it does the trick for him, at least with the growing part. I know when they cauterized mine it didn't kill them, because once they restored the vertebral spacing with the fusion (over a year later), I had full feeling again (pressure off the nerves)...that would not have been the case with dead nerves- so I'm not sure what the outcome of this will be. It could take them a lot longer to regenerate, though. Might be worth looking into human Rhizotomy and running it by your vet?

I wonder if, because they burned the nerves (thats what cauterization does) you feel the burn? I know its weird, but unless you kill the nerve all the way to the brain, the nerve right next to would feel the burn and hurt. Regardless, I'm glad Jackie is feeling better this morning. Val, you are doing a great job, you are a good momma. Jen, I can't imagine ((((HUGS))))
