I would like to know if glider's teeth grow out like hampster's. I have heard that they do a good job keeping them short, but her teeth are getting big. She does have chew toys and dry food available 24/7.

From what I've read glider's teeth do not continue to grow. I think www.glideruniversity.org might have some data on that. --fje

shaving or "floating" glider's teeth can actually cause them pain. No glider teeth don't continue to grow as they aren't rodents. The teeth may seem big but no worries, they aren't gowing excessively and don't need treatment aside from simply keeping them healthy with a good diet.

I beg to differ. My gliders teeth were so long his little tongue would not stay in his mouth! My vet clipped them, and I didn't know it was a bad thing, but then they grew right back. So despite what people say, my gliders teeth do grow. I check them all the time. So far, they are a good length. If there is research that says they don't grow, then Bandit is just special. He has dry food and toys to chew on, but that doesn't help. We are going to a different vet tomorrow. One that I saw on GC. So I will ask him and see what the verdict is. Cauase now, I'm confused!

No big deal banditsmommy, it's a common misconception and their tongues DO seem to sort of catch on the teeth but I suppose humans see it that way because we are used to things loking a certain way and the long upper and lower teeth being so much longer than all else, automatically instinct tells us it's not quite right. However, I suggest you get another vet if he/she did float the teeth. If they didn't know that it's a bad idea, then they need to a) learn and b) not get your money until the do.

You say the tongue was hanging out the mouth? I have a glider that I took in over a year ago that had this problem. I took her to the vet and he said her jaw had been broke in the past and never seen to and it was out of line causing the tongue to stick out. Her lower teeth cause of being out of line were going into the roof of her mouth. But like I said her jaw had been broke in the past and the teeth in the roof of her mouth was strictly from her jaw not lining up right. How old is your glider and how long has the tongue been hanging out of her mouth? After they clipped the teeth did the tongue go back in? If you have any questions feel free to email me at []mysticangel@glidersanonymous.com[/] or PM me on here.

Ok, I just went to the vet today. I found him in the vet directory. He said that the incisors grow, but the other teeth do not. But ya'll are right, they are not rodents. All of a rodents teeth grow continuously.

It may be time to find a good glider knowkedgeable vet. This article seems to explain it rather well. http://web.ask.com/redir?u=http%3A%2F%2F...&Complete=1scroll way down.

Well if you think my vet is not knowledgable enough, have him pulled off of the GC vet list!!! I am here to testify that my gliders lower incisors do grow! I don't get them clipped at the time, beaqcause when I did I didn't know any better and I had a horrible vet (only saw her once!)

banditsmommy, my apologies for coming across too harsh about your vet. We have a case of different vets stating opposite things as fact. One has to be wrong. Hopefully the one in error can be taught and is willing to learn. This thread from the best of the board may help explain why it appears that a gliders teeth may grow. Bourbons response explains it best. http://www.sugarglider.net/ubbthreads/sh...true#Post126158I have spent the last several hours looking on the internet for a definitive answer to the question but have only found personal and breeder sites, Some say the teeth grow and some say they don't. With that in mind I have to rely on the anecdotal evidence from this board to to reach a conclusion. With so many people feeding a soft food diet, if the incissors grew I suspect that we would be seeing a lot more cases of dental injury as a result of overgrown teeth. Again, my apologies.

i had a rescue come through my home and when i got him checked up by the vet with a handful of other gliders, the vet commented on how worn down his teeth were compared to the rest. not only were the two front teeth completely gone and unusable from wear, his lower teeth were also missing a substantial amount of length. my history on him placed his age at 3 or more years of age, but likely not more than 4...this is very young to have so much tooth worn away, but it was not entirely suprising since the person he was rescued from and the previous owner before that had him on hard pellets for a staple, and didn't soak them to soften them. i do not feed my gliders anything on a regular basis that's harder than carrot, and carrot is hardly solid enough to wear away teeth. none of them have been compulsive chewers. i had this particular glider for 4 months, rehomed him, and then got him back 3 months later. he finally found his forever home after another 3 months under my care. this makes 10 months with me, and his teeth never regained their length, even though there was nothing for him to wear down his teeth on. my vet (excellent doctor, i wish there were more like him) told me he would never regain the use of his two top teeth, and as a result would have to be fed soft foods for the remainder of his life. he also told me that the bottom teeth would stay too short. again, this is medical opinion, but after 10 months and no regrowth, i can believe his didn't grow. none of my other gliders have had teeth problems, and as before, the hardest food they get is carrot, and none are chewers. after the teeth on the rescue, i have decided hard pelleted food is not the way to go...a glider's teeth are delicate and should be treated with care. if you trim a glider's teeth, not only will it cause pain (imagine getting a hole drilled through one of your teeth) but the glider will no longer be able to properly eat. they also are much more seceptable to getting sick. just like in people, if your teeth are not healthy there is a much higher likelihood of getting sick. i don't mean to sound rude or condescending at all, but i have to admit i was extremely alarmed when i had seen that you got your glider's teeth trimmed. please, please, PLEASE don't do it again. if they continue to grow as you say, perhaps you should get the species checked. a sugar glider can no more have growing teeth than it can have a fish tail. it's a trait from a completely different animal.
Beth Glide free Dimitri and Tegan and right-side up!

kitsune, if your gliders teeth were as worn down as you say, it was not from hard food. Quite frequently vets will trim gliders teeth. I have actually heard of breeders trimming glider teeth so that when they bite their new owners, it won't hurt. I don't know if you've ever feed a glider hard food, but they do not bite it/chew it with their front teeth. The bite it with the molars on the side of their mouth. Not once have I seen a glider use it's incisors to bite into a hard food and I have feed happy glider to my gliders when I travel for the last 2 years at least...

No! Their teeth do not continue to grow. This floating/cutting of gliders teeth has been a problem in the past with veterinarians here in the USA. I was very very upset after hearing this a few years ago, so I contacted a friend in Australia, Rosemary J.Booth (Kirk's Current Veterinary Therapy XIII) - who was extremely upset learning of this USA veterinary practice & stated that if anyone was to perform this practice of floating/cutting sugar gliders teeth in Australia, they would be visiting jail & or serving time in prison - I can not relate how upset she was! Rosemary Booth has since addressed this issue in newer Zoological & veterinarian publications. I would advise your veterinarian to talk with other USA sources more knowledgeable in sugar glider's dental issues asap!

Banditsmommy, Please do not think anyone is attacking you. I understand the confusion because there is so much conflicting information on the web and unfortunately, that is where many vets get their information too. It is so sad to me that vets will continue a certain practice even after learning that their way is not the best. (such as neutering and not leaving the sack) Unfortunately, Gliders are still a fairly new "pet" for the US and the vets that treat gliders are often misinformed from the beginning or have not bothered to keep up on current knowledge. This is in no way your fault. We all learn and we all try to share what we learn with others. The important thing is we continue to share our experiences, both good and bad, so we can continue our education about these amazing little ones. If anyone has a bad experience with any vet listed in GC vet links, Please share that experience with one of the mods so we can make the informed decision about whether or not to leave that vet's name on the list. Just because a vet is listed, it does not mean there is a GC endorsement for that vet, one way or the other. Everyone should research the vet for themselves to determine if that vet is right for the care of their animal.
620-704-9109 Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.
