Well, Dr Kaiser called me tonight to give me the results of Rena's C&S culture on her abscess. According to the lab results, there is NO bacteria present. She has what is called a "Sterile Abscess". This is an abscess caused by not by bacteria but rather by a non-living irritant. For example, one can be caused from drugs which have been injected. It is considered sterile because there is no infection involved. According to the site I looked at, a sterile abscess is more likely to turn into hard solid lumps as they scar rather than remaining pockets of pus.
Dr Kaiser is consulting with other vets to see if anyone has an idea of what could have caused this to happen to my sweet baby girl.

Well, that would explain why the antibiotics aren't producing results, wouldn't it? You might want to ask him to look into a corticosteroid to reduce inflammation...not sure if it would help with the fluid, though. Let us know when he finds out anything, and if he has any theories on where that much fluid is coming from. The drainage tube is still an idea to keep it from building up in there, and keep it draining. Scar tissue or no, at least you don't have to worry about bacteria invading the eye or brain as things stand,, unless it were to get in through the open wounds, and I know you're keeping those clean and sterile, so that's a bright point in all this. hug2

Thanks Jen, I'll be sure to talk to him about that. When he called, I was 1/2 asleep so it made it difficult to think of things to ask at the time.
In the meantime, Rena's face is looking better. The swelling seems to be staying down, tho her little eye is still closed. I'd like to see it opening a bit more.

Her little eye has continued to stay @ 1/2 way open. So far there has been no more swelling (knock on wood) and Ms Rena is getting a tad upset with Mom pulling her out & messing with her face. I have a feeling that she doesn't have full sight in her eye, but can see some out of it & it startles her when I approach her on that side.

I thougth I'd update everyone on my little Carina. Last week I took her into the vet along with Seamore. He had a recheck scheduled for his teeth & I snuck my baby girl in. Anyway, the abscess has remained down and the incisions have completely healed. Her fur is even starting to grow back so she doesn't look as pathetic. However Carina's eye has still not opened any further. It's staying at about 1/2 way opened. I talke to Dr Kaiser about this & he examined her eye & said that she may never get full control of it back. There may have been damage done to her muscles/nerves from either the swelling or from the incisions he made to relieve it. At this point we are not sure. All we really know is that her eye is droopy & her third eyelid is visable in the front corner & won't retract. I've talked with Linda about it & we are going to try magnet therapy with her to see if it will do anything to help open her eye up some more.
Rena has also moved back into the reptarium with her boys & I've modified it with additional shelving & ramps to assist her in getting around. It was hard enough for her to maneuver from leval to leval over the PVC pipe frame with only 3 legs but now that she has limited vision in addition I felt that she needed a little bit of help getting around. In time she will adjust to it more, but in the meantime I don't want her falling.

I'm glad to hear she's doing better Chris hug2

Willow has the one eye we have issues with - she has limited vision in it and sometimes the third eyelid is visible. The veterinary ophthalmologist has looked at it several times, and we've come to the conclusion that the 3rd eyelid is visible when her eye is dry (because she can't fully blink) - so she's on a gel form of eye drops, one drop once a day. the gel is easier to get in her eye and also seems to form a longer lasting protection from dryness than drops did.

Thanks Becki, I'll ask my vet about eye drops for her to see if he thinks it would help.

Glad to hear Carina is doing better! I hope her eye gets better. Does it seem to irritate her? It sounds like those drops could help, I hope so! hug2
