Ok my joeys are 6 week OOP and I have started looking for signs that Mom and Dad are weening the joeys and they are coming out of the pouch at night and playing when mom and dad do but I havnt seen any evidence that they are eating solids yet. They are however peeing and pooping on their own (on my couch too smile ) Does this just mean I might have to keep them with mom and dad a bit longer we were waiting until 8 weeks OOP to seperate them but we will wait until needed . Is there anything I can do to encourage this?

I'm no expert and haven't been to this stage in joey development yet but it's my understanding from reading posts that at 6-weeks is about when they will begin to ween and you should be putting extra food out for them but it'll start out as just taste testing. It may not be very obvious that they have started eating the solids even if they have tried a little. I also think that sometimes, some joeys may take a littler longer than others.

Like I said in the beginning this is just my understanding. I'm sure someone will be a long to give you more info to help you with this.

I would just let nature take its coarse in this situation. They'll start eating more on their own as they get closer to 8 weeks. If you are unsure if mom is done nursing by then it never hurts to keep them with her an extra week or two. In fact alot of breeders do keep them until 9 or 10 weeks. You can keep them with their parents until they are 16 weeks. thumb

Quite often, at 6 weeks oop, I don't see any evidence that the joeys are eating on their own yet except for the fact that the food is all gone in the morning (I give double-portions from normal, i.e. 4 Tbsp. of everything instead of just 2 Tbsp.) Every once in a while, I will actually "catch" one of them out of the pouch and in the glider kitchen and this will confirm that they are in the weaning process - but that doesn't happen often. By the time they are 8 weeks oop though, you should notice them out of the pouch and running around the cage on their own, even when not eating, when the parents are awake. If not, then keep them a couple of extra weeks just to be on the safe side.

I have joeys that are eight weeks oop, and when they try to nurse, mom pushes them away. Mom knows when it's time for the babies to "grow up", and some just take a little more time that others smile

Ok well everyone has been eating solids for at least a week now tails are getting very bushy and we will be 8 weeks OOP on SAT.. There has been a lot of crabbing in the pouch lately and Mia seems to be pushing off the joeys especially her girl. So I know this is part of the weening process just dont know which one. Is she pushing the babies off from nursing full out? Or is Mia getting a bit girlish towards her daughter. I have been told that Mom's can sometimes attack their daughters around this time I am planning to seperate on SAT as long as everyone is still eating well but I check on those babies a lot through the day because we are working on bonding and it has been over a week since I caught them nursing plus Mia isnt singing to her babies anymore. Lol sorry long post.. any thoughts ,, comments.. smile

I've never had any of my mothers attack their daughters shakehead I don't know who told you that, but it's news to me dunno In all likelihood, the mother was letting the daughter know that she's old enough to go find her own food now roflmao Just normal weaning process and nothing to be worried about smile
