My little guy is 2 weeks (oop). I've been spending time with him for 5-10 minutes every day since his eyes opened. Yesterday he seemed cold while I was holding him, so I got him warm, put him in the nest, and as usual, Mommy and Daddy licked him and ate their treats, went back into the nest, so I assumed all was well. Today, I went to give them their cricket-treat, and baby was nowhere to be found. After panicking and searching, he was in behind a bare part of the nestbox away from Mommy and Daddy. So I reached in and touched him, he was cold and making loud wheezing sounds, as if he was attempting to 'crab' at me, also, big hissing sounds. I took him out, put him near my skin (cleavage, as I've learned from this site), and warmed him up. He's now in a box with a soft bed with a heating pad underneath. The temperature is appr. 90 F... is that the right temp? Also, I mixed up some Puppy Esbilac with some liquid Pedialite, (1 part Esb: 3 parts Ped). As advised in Barron's Sugar Glider Handbook. He very eagerly consumed 1 full eyedropper without stopping. (1cc) I tried to see if he'd want more, but he fought the food away and wouldn't let go of my hand. (I think he loves me!)... PLEASE, if anyone has any advice, I'd appreciate it!!!! Thank you GC!!!!!!!

I'm not an expert, but it sounds like he may be sick. If so, you stand a high risk of him being cannabalized. I'd say seperate him from his parents ASAP. Also, if he's sick, then he needs an ER vet tonight. I'll look up a link to joey nutrition info, but I bet he will need more than just food. Good luck to you!

Hi Paula, I'm not expert, but I think 90 degrees seems too hot for me. I would say 80 would be fine, but let someone who knows more about babies come around and answer your question. Does he seem content?

Bourbon knows tons more about gliders than I, so definitely listen to what she said! I was just going off of what I've read, I've not even gotten my first one yet.

If the parents arn't showing agression, I would put him back and check on him frequently. If you continue to find him alone and cold, then you may consider pulling him. They are not able to regulate thier own heat and thats the danger here. You can also feed the baby BML which is what we use for our rejected joeys, be sure to follow with plain water. We have had wonderful sucess saving very young joeys. It sounds like he was out of pouch around the time as my K.C. who was rejected Christmas Day. I will keep your little one in my thoughts. If you need more info, please let me know thru PM's and I will give you my contact number. Angie

Thanx guys... Baby does have a bite mark on his face, and Tasha (mom) has been pushing him off of her when he gets on. I've never actually seen him on her back. She's been pushing him away since last week, and ignoring him. Baby tries to follow her, but can't keep up (of course). Baby is eating really well, and totally perked up! Baby is oop 2 wks, so I'm assuming the temperature should be a bit lower than the mom's temperature. It's down to 84, and he's happily grooming himself in there and seems comfy. He's got lots of room to move around in the 10 gal. aquarium. Anyone think of a name for him??? By the way, what is BML???

Paula, Glad to hear that he's perking up now that you've fed him! BML is Bourbon's Modified Leadbeater's diet. What diet do you have your gliders on? Here's a link to GC's Diet Page where you can view several different diets for gliders. These diets are ones that people researched and optimized to meet glider's needs. If you aren't on one yet, you might want to take a look and see if you think that one of these might be better for your suggies. But, especially with the joey, if the mom really is rejecting him then you'll need to feed him. I'm sure someone else will be more knowledgeable about this, but I've seen a lot of people recommend feeding them the BML diet without the eggshell and I think the wheat germ. But I think they need some other type of supplement, also. I'll see about looking it up here in a few minutes and I'll post it if no one else has. (Again, I'm just repeating what I have read, I have no real experience, yet) You said earlier that you saw 2 bite marks near his mouth. How bad are they? Are they open sores?

The joey should be pulled and hand raised. If the mother has already bitten it she will either kill it or allow it to die. The mother needs to be taken in to see a vet and checked for a yeast infection of the pouch. This could be the problem or it could be that she is not producing enough milk to feed the joey. If it is her first joey it is not uncommon for the mothers to reject them due to lack of experience and immaturity on the mothers part. Also if the mother has not been on a proper diet and receiving the proper suppliments they are subject to rejecting the joeys. Charlie H

Paula told me last night that the mom was (3 or 4?) years old, although this is her first baby. Is the fact that it's her first baby likely to be the cause still, or is it more likely to be a health or nutrition issue at this point?

Don't forget to make the baby go potty!!!!! Take a warm wet q tip and gently rub the baby's bottom with it. Do this after every feeding and make sure that he goes. Good luck.
