I am about to get a glider and im doing all the research i can to know exactly what care they need, etc.
I was wondering, if you get a hand raised baby at about 8wks OOP...will it most likely still nip or bite? OR will it be better getting a baby, and easier to bond with, rather than rescu ing one?

In my opinion, it would depend on the circumstances of the rescued one...I'm sure there are lots of them out there that would be great. It would also depend on how the baby that is 8 wks OOP has been raised. The more they are handled the less chance of biting..but I haven't had one yet that couldn't be "calmed down". Good luck.

8 weeks oop is the absolute earliest a joey should be pulled from their parents, so you dont want to get one younger than that. They learn alot from there parents up till that time. During the bonding process you might take a nip or to but it will be worth it when you are fully bonded to your glider.

Thanks for the advice, the only reason i said 8wks OOP is because i was talking to a breeder in Denver and she said thats how old her girls were. So thanks again!

My first glider was about a year old when I got him and he is a doll. Dixie was just a little thing and was from a great breeder who spends lots of time with her joeys. They are both the sweetest things.
My little Dayla was born here and has been handled since day one oop and is by far my most sweet. Her twin brother was handled just as much but is a bit stand offish.
Maui and McKenna are two years old and I got them a couple of months ago and they came from a good home but it has taken me a while for them to really trust me (we are still bonding).
I think it all depends on the glider and their personality. Not all gliders will form that bond where their whole world revolves around their human but that isn't to say they won't bond. It is just some are more curious about all their surroundings and want to explore.
Some are just naturally more cuddly.

It depends... It will be easer for a first timer with sugar glider to get a joey, or you could rescue a joey like I am from AngieH. But sometimes you could get a older one and they could be just as sweet like Dancing said about her suggie. It juse depends on what you are looking for, and it also depends on the suggies personality. I don't know if that helped you any, but I tried.

Interesting question. Again, I think it is a matter of personality of the glider. I "hand-raised" a pair of twin joeys. They were male and female and I handled them both from day one out of the pouch. I spent the exact same amount of time snuggling, bonding, feeding and playing with them both. The male never crabs and is a snuggle bug. The female crabs, lunges and bites. As a breeder, I feel like I failed with her, but am not sure what I could have done differently. I have let the male go to his new home now that he is 9 weeks old and his new family LOVES him, but am keeping the female to continue working with her. I do not want to let a glider leave here in such a way. She needs more work. So it is not her age or her handling but her personality that you need to watch for.

I had an unfortunate circumstance (parents ate the previous joey) that made me unfcomfortable poking around and trying to handle this joey (their new girl) from day 1 OOP. She was nearly 6 weeks OOP before I even saw her, I decided to let mom and dad, and the joey, decide when it was time to come out in "public." I think it was the right choice. She is the sweetest little thing and started bonding with me from the first time I handled her back in December - the second time I held her she ran under my arm to hide when a noise scared her, rather than trying to run away or back to mom and dad in the cage.
Last night she took a nap in my sweatshirt pocket and when it was time to go back in the cage I scooped her up and she stayed curled up and didn't even want to go back in. A few weeks ago she was super crabby when she was woken up, but last night she just kind of looked at me like "do I have to mom? it was so nice and comfy in there!" lol.

So basically, like everyone said, it depends on circumstance and on the glider's personality.

Im getting scared now! I dont want to end up with a really crabby, mean glider. Im new and i would hate for that to happen. Not to say that I would get rid of him/her because of it, but it would definately be EASIER if I could get a cuddler. lol Thanks for the advice everyone!!

My baby's daddy is a crabber...he's never lunged at anyone, but he sure is grumpy when he gets woken up too early! (i.e. before 10pm!) He likes to nibble fingertips, but he's never bitten hard enough to break the skin, and in his own way he's just as much a sweetheart as mom and the baby. We "rescued" him (Heihachi) and his mate (Keiko) from a woman that "couldn't take care of them anymore" for whatever reason. It took a lot longer for Heihachi to trust us enough to let us pick him up. I think since you're getting a young glider it will be much easier for you to bond closely with him/her and you don't have nearly the same risk of inheriting glider "bagage" as we did when we got ours (they were 2 years old when we got them.)

Kryna, you're absolutely right. I think that when at all possible a new glider owner is best to start with a friendly, well socialized joey. The transition to glider ownership is complex and sometimes nerve-wracking enough without feeling like your joey hates you. For your first glider(s), try to find a situation where you can meet the joeys a few times before you bring them home, can meet with your breeder, ask questions, etc. I think you'll be much happier that way. Granted, that's an ideal situation and not everyone starts out that way... but if you can do it, GREAT!
