(Sorry! This is kinda long... but it simply can't be shortened. You understand right?) When I was 8 years old, I saw my first suagr glider on TV. I was fascinated and my little heart just melted. I begged and begged my parents to let me have one, but they were relatively new to the states and were too expensive. (now I realize I was too young also!) So fast forward 10 years later to April 2004, and you'll see me finishing my senior year. I still had not forgotten the ache in my heart for these critters, so since I was living on my own, I launched a search for a glider of my own. For weeks, I scoured the internet, but with no luck. Finally, through 2 message boards, I found a woman in a town close to mine with a baby glider. Thus, Loki came into my life. The first time we met was the first time I ever had seen a glider in person. And there was a bond. He immediately crawled down my shirt and there he stayed. We brought him home and hooked him up with a really nifty setup of two cages connected by a tube, a wodent wheel, numerous toys, and of course, tons of mealworms! He settled in so perfectly... it was obviously meant to be. Now Loki loved everyone. He saw them as great playmates, but I was Loki's "tree". He would "talk" to me from his pouch with tiny hisses and chirps and all but leap to me when his cage was opened. I was always covered in Loki kisses (and scratch marks!) everyday for two months. Oh, and did I meantion he was my personal mannicurist? He loved to push back my cuticles with his teeth. Anyway, one night my boyfriend and I had him out and things were going great. We were discussing Loki's future with us and how wonderful he was. When we finally went to bed, I put him away, making sure everything was really secure, with a kiss on his little bald spot. And then the next morning, when I woke, I remembered a dream I had had of Loki getting out of his cage. It scared me a little, so I went to check on him, but the top of his cage was on the floor. I reached in and prayed to feel him in his pouch, but he wasn't there. My boyfriend was on the phone with his father and he noticed what I had found. He couldn't help me look tho because of his dad. As I started down the hallway, I had this awful pit in my stomach. Something was wrong. I turned into the bathroom and all I saw was his tail in the toilet. I completely lost it I guess because the next thing I knew, I was on the couch bawling hysterically. My precious Loki was gone. And the one thing I was so terrified of was what took him. I guess my room mates came in after we went to sleep and they took Loki out to play... and they didn't make sure everything was secure. Nor did they put the toilet lid down like I had reminded them to do so often. Because of my friends irresponsibility and lack of respect, I lost my best friend. For a week, I was unconsolable. I cried all the time, hardly ate, and barely slept. I had only had him for two months, but he was so precious, so important to me. That was a month ago and I am crying as I write this. Please, set boundries if you have room mates... and always, ALWAYS keep the lid on the toilet down. The pain you feel when you find your fuzzbutt like that is so deep and never ending. Loki was a blessing to me... even if I only had him for a short while. I'll never forget my Loki.

~In loving memory of Loki. I miss you more than you'll ever know.~

That is terrible. I would have had to beat someone's a** if that happened to me. It actually did happen to me with my flying squirrel. I always let him have the run of his room at night, and I always told my friends to not leave the door open. Well wouldn't you know one of my friends left the door open and only God knows what happened to my little guy. I had cats, but he hated them, and he was VERY fast, so I'd doubt they got him. The guy that did it moved shortly after the incident, so I didn't get to woop him, but I would if I ever saw him again. The only thing that would save me from beating them to a bloody pulp is if they bought me another glider/flyer and apologized about 1000 times. Of course it doesn't really replace the one you had, but it helps.

Thank you so much everyone. It honestly does make me feel better to know that there are people who can truly understand how I feel and how awful it is to lose a glider. You are all truly wonderful. And just so you are all aware, I am moving out of my apartment next week. This means that my roommates will be left with nothing because all the furniture, the tv, everything is mine. Pathetic I know, but it makes me feel kinda better!

OMG...that is the saddest thing I ever read. I am so sorry for your loss; I'd be inconsolable if anything happened to my gliders...I can't even imagine your pain.
I will light a candle for your peace.

Taylynn,

Loki, Annie and Katey are partying together at Rainbow Bridge right now. Your roommates should be introduced to a new level of karma. May your broken heart find healing and peace soon.

ah, the spoiled gliders on the Bridge... Nope, haven't thought of a name yet. I think I might have to meet her first. Loki is a norse god of mischief, and when I first met my little boy, he was everywhere! Hence "Loki"... but my girl is another story. I'm so anxious I can hardly stand it. Hipbchik, thank you. and major brownie points for the ladder idea. That is absolutely fantasic. Will definitely get one for my new home, even though it is just my b/f and I.

Taylynn, I don't have any gliders yet so I don't know the love that they can bring yet. But I just lost a very loved hamster, Meeko, in a sickness that came and took her away in 2 days. Wet tail (the runs) and a bad cold, both VERY deadly to hamsters! Good luck with your new baby!!! Congrats!

"The fruit of the Spirit is love and joy." Galatians 5:22

With the loss of little Loki's love and the joy he brought you, a little part of you was lost too, but he still sends his love from the rainbow bridge , and your new addition will help replenish what you've lost.

My condolences.

I'm so sorry for your loss . In the end your roomates will get what they deserve (hopefully bitten by an animal) Sorry that was mean. My Loki sends his love your way. I'd let you borrow him except Freya would have a fit . Congrats on your new baby.

[:"magenta"] to make the toilet safer for your new little girl, i would suggest a glider toilet ladder. just do a search on "potty safety" in the housing/accessories forum, or contact bmxgirl (she conceived the idea.) hope this helps. I'm sorry to hear about your loss. That is a very sad story. Sending lots of in your direction. And thank you for sharing this story with us, however hard it may have been. I'm so sorry for your loss!!! What a tragic story! I know your new little girl will never replace Loki, but I hope she will bring you as much joy as he did. I also hope that you can forgive your roommate in time and somehow still be friends. But that may be too much to ask of anyone. Good luck with your little girl!

I am so soo sorry for you loss. But sadly I know how you feel. I have felt that same numb terror, twice. I guess thats the price we pay for letting animals into our lives, we just cant help but love them. The first time I felt that numbness was a week after I got my first suggie Zeke. Zeke was only 5 wks old when I got him so I had to keep him in an aquarium with a heating pad underneath. The aquarium was sitting on my dresser. Well stupid, stupid, stupid me, forgot to make sure my bedroom door was shut all the way (it was a tricky one) and when I came home from grocery shopping I walked into my room to find peices of glass everywhere. One of my cats had gotton into the room and knocked the aquarium (a 10 gal one) off my dresser. I immediatly assumed he must have been killed by a peice of glass. I was so terrified to find him that way that I called my friend and made her come and look for him. Lukily she found him in the closet hanging on one of my sweaters.

And recently I lost one of my girl gliders when she was electrocuted in the fuse box. Let me explain.... my husband was messing with the water heater so he went to the fuse box (which is in the suggie room) and turned the power off, well he forgot to close the box and a curious suggie stuck her little hand in the back and grabbed a live wire. I walked into the room and saw her hanging by her paw. I have never been so mad at my husband in all the time I've known him.
I would also like to say that I am so very sorry for your loss. Good luck with your new baby!
ps Sorry so loooong!

Oh sweetheart...I am so sorry for your loss. You will be in my prayers that your heart will mend quickly.
Thank goodness for the precious memories she has left behind for you & I hope that you will get some comfort in knowing that she is waiting for you over the rainbow bridge & that will be the best day ever.
