Sorry if I misspelled that. My 8 month old boy was recently found to have an infection in one of those sacs that produce milky white lubrication. His antibiotics is almost gone and he was neutered last thursday. He has been in an e-collar due to the neuter and the infection caused him to self mutilate so I have to clean him every night. Tonight I noticed a small bump on his cloaca like a pimple that milky white stuff comes out of. Is this normal? Do you think it's just the infection coming out of his body? His infection should be coming out. Just wondering if this was normal, and I'll call my vet if it is not.

I would see the vet ASAP. These little ones can fool you when they are sick. I really would suggest you see him tomorrow. This is not normal

hey girl.. you still got his collar on??? when is your next vet visit with your vet? call him in the morning and talk to him about it.. try to describe better what it is you are seeing? is it a pimple like? or is it 1/2 pea sized and looks like a small ball? (possible anal glan") he hasn't been able to get to himself has he? i am assuming since his collar has been on that whatever it is is manifesting on it's own??? please i need these answers..

He has is collar on and it does look like a pimple. We don't have another vet visit set up, and we are in Ohio until Wednesday. I just looked and I can't see it now.

Edit: I checked out Neo's bottom, which isn't as swollen now, and only when I pushed down and started looking around did the white stuff come out, which is how it used to be before he got sick when we took him to the vet. I am still waiting to call the vet since it's only six am, but I thinnk it's normal. I also read that in salamanders the male has a pimple like thing that you can only see when the cloaca is protruding...I do know that Neo is not a salamander.

the pimple thing you see is the hole from which the anal glans express it's needed ???products???

their anal glans are at the 3:00 and 9:00 position on either side of the cloaca .. they are multi-chambered, they have multi purposes, they not only act as a lubricant for the feces, but that is also where their scent/s gland is as well. that is what they produce and emit the skunk smell as well as the musky marking odors from. what I am unsure about is if one of those chambers also deals with another hormone of some sort..

because of the multi-chambers my vet was very leary of expressing them, for fear of damaging the chambers, what is still in the virtually unknown stages is since they are much like a ferrets scent gland, if they can be removed safely the risk of the gliders life is not worth, the chance of trying it. Also not sure if there is an infection in them if they can be treated. there is still so many uncertainities.. the more we learn, the more we find we do not know.

hah. Thanks again. That would make sense especially considering that he sprayed me when I was messing with it. I probably made it worse by doing so, but he's been out of the collar for a while tonight leaning and only makes that noise for a split second. Tomorrow he gets two cagemates so maybe he'll be all better soon.

I did read your first post only day before yesterday, but with Chronos hadn't had time to reply. Chronos had infected anal glands, and the infection (his cultured as klebsiella pneumonia) was green colored.

The glands CAN be expressed, but it has to be done extremely gently so as not to damage or rupture them. We were about to give the go ahead for our vet to take them out, when he developed another problem leading to his death yesterday afternoon.

What our vet wanted us to do pre surgery was to let the infection swell the glands to a degree, so she could determine that tissue from everything else. She seemed confident she could remove them without causing to much damage to the cloacal muscles. I think she's done it before but I'm not certain. My ER vet has attempted it, but didn't have good outcomes with too much damage to the cloaca despite his best efforts and will not attempt it again.

If the infection can't be kept gone by antibiotics, and keeps recurring, eventually the only choice is to remove them, because antibiotics too often for too long will ultimately destroy the liver. Abscesses are notoriously hard to treat because they have to heal from the inside out, and need to be actively draining to do that.

My vet is always happy to consult with another, and was the exotics vet at a zoo here for a number of years. Under the vet links it's Dr. Harris at Wasatch Exotic.

I'm attaching a picture of the green infection that came out of Chronos' glands.
And here's the link for part of Chronos' history with the glands-we'd thought it was a recurring UTI for nearly a year:
