Im sure this question has been asked here before, but I cant find a current post on it... Anywayz, Im curious how often will the female come into season.. My little girl Sachi is 8mos OOP and she has been jumping on our little boy Watague Alot!! He is nuetered so he cant do anything about it.. But I am considering taking Sachi to breed with my cousins male glider.. Is that a good idea in its self??? what could happen if Sachi mates with another male glider that she does not live with, and would Watague possibly not like the babies??

Female gliders come into utero approximately every 28-30 days. This last for about 2-3 days on average. Gliders bond to their mates, they aren't like dogs and cats where you can stud them out. It would be potentially traumatic to your female or your cousins male if you were to stud him out like that. One or the other could become bonded to their mate and when separated they will become depressed and may even die.

Man..I dont want that to happen!! That was not really my intentions either... Its just Sachi and Watague are my first gliders.. and when I got them I had him nuetered because I was not prepared for babies and did not think I would want any- also I heard that un-neuetered males had strong oders and I wanted to avoid the stink..
Now after reading and seeing little joey pics on this site and learning more about gliders- it has me thinking that I may want lil joeys someday...

Joeys are a lot of work and tend to bring as much heart break as they do joy. Most first time moms loose at least one of their joeys (if they have more than one). Then there's always the risk of rejection, joeys being cannibalized, and the list could go on and on. I wouldn't recommend allowing your gliders to breed just because you want to have cute little babies. Think about the future. Do you have time to care for a joey if the mother rejects them? Do you have the room/time/money for another glider? If you don't plan on keeping the joey, are you willing to get all the proper licenses required to sell that joey? Is there somebody out there to sell your joey to? Over population starting to be a problem with sugar gliders. Every dad I see more and more gliders for sale. If you decide to breed, please weigh all of the possible consequences first...

Thanks for the advice, I sure will take all those things in consideration.. Soo as it stands- Sachi will never get to mate and have babies... Will this have an adverse effect on her in any way or can she live along happy life never getting that?? It seems pretty important to her- I mean she is always getting on Watague- looks like she is trying to do it.

Actually, it's probably better for her is she doesn't have babies. Mammals that don't have babies usually live longer, healthier lives. Child birth and care is very hard on any animals body and it's actually in the animals best interest to not reproduce.

Your gliders are cute!!!

Typically when gliders mate, the males will be on the females back holding on with hands, legs and mouth.

She will be fine not having babies. Your neutered male can still mate with her he just may not have the desire to do so because of the neutering. He can still mate though he just can't have any joeys. I think she will get frustrated for a couple days a month, but then the rest of the time she will be very happy. Loaning her out to another glider like that could have some very serious repercussions like the ones mentinoed above. Also once she is back with her typical mate he will know they aren't his joeys and he could very well kill them. This has happened in certain cases. There have been cases where the opposite has happened, but one never knows which way i twill go for sure. Hope this helps a little. I think everyone has given you some really good information.

Well Im glad to hear Watague can still go thru the motions if he wants too.. He may jus need to mature alittle more and sachi may have to show him how - lol... but Im glad to knw they will be fine with out it..
If I decide to get another pair of gliders I may get a pair to mate and have a joey or two - then fix him.. I will make sure I have time, space, and money before I take on that much responsibility with more gliders...

I'm glad to hear that you're putting some thought into breeding. It's a big responsibility with any animal... Gliders even more than most because of all the legalities involved...
