*sigh* Last night I went to bed......got a wake up call at 2am from Joey. The hissing was horrible. I got up so fast. He was walking around really slow and I looked at the cover he was on and saw a track of blood. Picked him up and saw his penis hanging out and some kind of sack. It looked like his bladder.....I'm not sure. It was really big and bloody. Woke my dad up and he said we will have to wait til morning. I told him no it can't wait we need to go now. So I called the usual number and got a couple of emergency numbers. I called them could bearly talk to my dad did the talking. They said that they look at gliders but don't know much about them. Same with the others. We had not choice. Any way. Doc looked at him and said that he his penis had prolapsed and his rectal had prolapsed. Doc said surgery is complicated and usually they don't make it. I agreed to have him euthanized. I did not hasitate to say so but I did have a hard time talking. They used gas. I took him home and burried him. I am so sore all over and I hurt. He did not deserver to suffer. He's soul is free now. It made me feel alittle bit better to have him put down cause I knew he'd stop suffering. I may never get another sugar glider again. Hurts so bad. Right now I can only whisper. If I don't my throat gets real tight and closes up when I'm all upset like this. Pray for my little buddy. please

I so feel at fault here. I should have been insistenet that you put the e-collar on, but I thought he wasn't chewing anymore once you had him treated. I totally misunderstood the post or I wasn't thinking straight. I should have known better than that when I read the post. I am so sorry for your loss and this definately taught me a good lesson. Any sign of mutilation and I am going to insist on an e-collar even if it seems they aren't chewing anymore. I am so sorry to have let you down.

The vet said that he might have pulled something out from the inside. One of the asistants didn't know what the long thing was, which was his penis. I'm glad that we all can learn something. I refuse to quit my research for I have only gotten started. Here is a list of deaths of mine.
Ginger---she was a baby and had a mysterious death with not signs. The whole litter was infected with what ever was going on, so I was told. She lived with me from november 31 2000 to december 8th 2000. Every moment charished
Rocket---Died of possible poisoning, that's my theory anyway. He had climbed under an electic heater which was not plugged in. I had no idea it was leaking and never really knew those things had oil in it. died on January 4th 2002. Had him for 1 year and 4 months. I think I got him on sept 9th 2001. Not sure.
Joey---Euthanized for no hope of recovery from sm. Unknown causes of pain. Maybe it also had something to do with his leg problem. Unknown bloody organ hung out most likely enlarged from irritation or some kind of unknown infection. from January 4th 2002 to June 5th 2004 at 2:55am

Note: Just like you said always have an e-collar on once seen a sign of sm even if it all seems to be better. Keep sg away from any kind of heater even if it's not on or plugged in. At least check very closely for anything that may harm your sg when being near the heater. As for the first sg I had...I have nothing to say cause it only gets me confused. I still ponder about what could have happened.

I've calmed down alot and I do feel better that I put him down and out of his suffering. I will power clean his cage and throw out any toys that concern me. The rest of the stuff will be cleaned and ready for the next possible arrival if I'm up for it. The next one will have to be female. The day I get her I will....I stress this greatly....I will get the BML even if I have no money for it. Right now I have to grab a few things and take it to cash converters to pay off the 75 dollars my dad spent. He doesn't want me to but I feel I have to since that was the money for the bills.

[:"purple"]oh, hun. i am so sorry to hear about your baby. at least his suffering is over, and he and all the others are waiting for you at the rainbow bridge. i read in a separate posting that you use only warm water to wipe out your cage. i think if i was in your situation, i would start using vinegar as well, as i have read that vinegar prevents infections (infections can cause sm.) i do NOT mean to blame you, so please do not misunderstand my intentions. i am just trying to help save you from this kind of pain again. also, females are less apt to sm, and they have a better survival rate when they do. maybe that will help you decide whether to get another sg. again, i am so sorry for your loss. What about baking soda? Does that kill anything that might be on the cage? I know you are not blaming me. Like several owners we only have so much knowledge of things about gliders. Many things that you guys are telling me I'm learning from it. It will help me with my decision. Thank you for your kindness. I am so tired. I haven't slept all that good for a week now.

[:"purple"]i do not know about baking soda, but i am pretty sure it won't kill germs. alot of people use a weak bleach solution and then rinse the cage well afterward. if you go to www.gliderhealth.com and click on "self-mutilation", they have more info. what happened to you is one of my biggest fears with sgs. it is one of the few things which makes me consider not getting a sg at all. it is good that you are learning all you can. that is what i am trying to do, and i will not be getting my sgs for years! i am glad you were not offended by my previous post. i know you must be going thru h--- right now. i am so sorry. [/]

Baking soda won't kill bacteria, but your right the bleach solution will. If you want to use that cage again I would wash it down with hot water, antibacterial soap, and a little bleach and then rinse it really well. This will take care of any bacteria and make the cage totally safe for another glider. What type of cage was it if you don't mind me asking? If it is made of galvanized wire you will want to get a new cage as those can cause UTI's which can lead to SM. SM is rare, but growing more common every day which is scary. I should have recognized all the signs in this case and for some reason I was not thinking properly and didn't tell the owner to take the precautions that should have been taken. Next time I see a case of even a swollen area I am going to recommend an e-collar. I worry about this with my gliders too. There is only so many things that you can do thinking you are preventing it, but there are reasons that they SM that we aren't even aware of. We know some things that cause it,but not all things. I do know that it happens with males that are alone and not neutered quite often. Not sure if that is a link, but it's just something I have noticed. I hope this doesn't stop you from bringing another suggie into your life, because they can bring so much joy as you well know. We can't always prevent their deaths, but we can make their life while they are alive a great one. Please don't let this stop you. I know it is hard and you will possibly need some time, but in the future you may want another one and I don't want this to change your mind on that. You are a good owner and could give a suggie an awesome glider parent and that's all they need.

I didn't cry yesterday and I'm so trying not to right now. Today I went to church and they were talking about love and hate and about the things that tear our very lives apart. I began thinking about my baby. Right now its 7pm and I was forced to wake up. I wanted to go to bed when I got home. I feel so weak and tired. My body is numb. I don't want to really do anything. I don't want to eat. That's not a good sign. I'm so about to cry I don't know how much longer i can hold back. I'll try to wait till everyone is asleep if I can stand it. Too late....I can't hold back. I have his baby tooth brush in my hand at times and it's becoming more often. I keep rubbing the brisles with my thumb. I gonna go. I can't take it.

[:"purple"]oh, you poor thing! i have found that if i just let it out and cry, i feel better. also, if you can get some sleep, it may help you feel less depressed. i get depressed alot, too. just take comfort in the fact that your babies are no longer suffering, and they knew that you loved them! i know it is bad right now, but in time you will start to feel like living again. It's always natural to grieve with the loss of a loved one, but please, try not to be too hard on yourself. Well, I don't mean hard on yourself...because you're really not, I just can't put it in any other words that comes close to what I'm implying. TRY and eat...small snacks, anything! Sleep regularly when possible and find things that bring a smile to your face. I don't think your glider would want for you to be like this.

It'll only get worse if you don't grasp the situation now. I'm hoping for you to feel better and keeping you in my thoughts. My heart goes out to you.

Take care.

Thank you so much. I just got home from the lundry mat. I couldn't help but to cry when I was there. I took his hair brush with me and a little izone picture. I realized that I didn't answer someones question. I have a cage that is stainless steal with some kind of black coating on it. I don't know what you call it. My dad says it might be a pvc cage. What are the new cages that may irritate them into sm?

[:"purple"]the cages which can cause sm are made of galvanized metal. i think zinc is also bad. did you go to www.gliderhealth.com and click on "self-mutilation"? they have loads of info about what causes it, how to prevent it, e-collars, etc. hope this helps. Oh my that will be a very big help with my research. I appreciate that greatly. I'm already trying to think of some names for the future arrival or arrivals. I seriously don't want to give up hope on raising gliders.

A few years ago, I bought my first pet. I paid $120 for the coolest "space station" setup on the market (Habitrail brand!) and bought myself a dwarf hamster. I bought her tubes, a bathroom "landing", and glow in the dark everything!

Six months later she died after I found her laying in her bedding not moving much. The vet pumped her with sucrose and put her in a heat pack, but she passed on a few minutes after we tried getting her help. I believe she may have had some sort of injury from a friend dropping her the day before. I clearly told my friend to be careful and she wigged out as soon as she held Izzie. (Now, no one will really hold my glider until I fully trust them. I take NO chances.) As tiny as she was, I loved her with all of my might. I buried her in my back yard and that is where she remains today. All I have left, memory-wise, is an iZone picture I keep of her on my dresser drawer knob...and one that I punched a hole in and hung on my keychain. At times, the iZone peels back a bit, but it's nothing a little Scotch tape can't handle. She's with me everywhere I go, as my keys are always with me. Think about doing something similar to what I did. Keep him close, but only do things for comfort. Don't do anything that will cause more heartbreak. Like I said, he's looking down on you probably trying to figure out how to get you to dry your little eyes. Do your best to help him, don't let him feel helpless! We're all here for you, stay strong.

iZone cameras came out a bit ago and they take tiny little Polaroid-type pictures. When I say tiny, I mean...slightly bigger than the Font Color box. And, that means ONLY the box with the colors, not including the Instant UBB Codes. Catch my drift?

Izone pictures are small as or a little bit bigger than the pictures you see under our names. I hate those pictures...wish I had a better camera. Too small to really look at. One had my sg Rocket in it. He was sitting in front of a small piano that use to belong to my grandmother. It's a music box thing. I have two of them I think. Rocket was one of my babies in the past that was most likey poisioned. Any way I'm starting to ramble...sorry.

This will be that last I reply to this topic. I had recieved a card in the mail from the ER. It says
Dear Michelle
May it help in some small way to know that our thoughts are with you. With Deepest Sympathy
We are so aorry for your loss of Joey. Your friends at Tiderwater Veterinary Hospital.

Now I'm crying. I will never forget my baby...never. Even if I get another baby. All I need right now is time and a friend or friends to help me. You guys have done just that. Thank you so much for all of your help and teaching me new things about sg. I'm forever greatful.

I am really sorry for your loss, and How I can't be there to help you through this I would like to offer you this, and My word is as good as writing it in OAK. Whether it be Lucky & Sweetie's or Lilo and Stitchs first set of babies. I would like to set you up with another Sugar Glider baby. I will even drive halfway, and provide a small travel cage. So keep in touch on the forum and with me. When they have babies and they are ready to go to a new home, I would like to give you a baby suger glider. I know it doesn't help with your loss.

You are so sweet. I would really like that. My dad told me that we may go and look at some babies tonight. I don't know if we are getting one. They are 180.00 here and about 580.00 for a pair that is pregnant with cage and what ever is in it. Hope I don't cry when looking at some babies.

yeah I know I said that was my last reply but I couldn't leave you hanging there.

Please consider waiting on getting another glider, though. Wait until you are able to provide the diet and vet care that the new glider will also require. I know you'll do the right thing.

I do have a vet for sg. I have looked up the ones that I'm able to get to incase of an emergency. I've picked the best one out of them all. The Doctor had sg for 7 years and she has 9 of them. I'm gonna do a quick interview with her through e-mail. Something I should have done at first. Thing is there are no late night ERs for sg out here that even know enough. They may know something about rodents but not these guys. What I'm gonna do is get some material for an e-collar and get the BML straight. Ok now I did go to look at some suggies, but unfortunately they didn't have any cause they were sold out. They will be getting a shipment in tomorrow and will not sit them out until 2 days after shipment to make sure they are in good health. Most likely they are. I'm gonna make me a chart and take it with me for things to check. I will give an exam on the gliders before I can decide. I'm just gonna look but I think my dad will get one cause he did ask for a female when we were at the pet store. My room is very empty right now and I will accept that. Til then I will get things straightened out and will make charts to check off everyday.

I am really sorry to hear about your baby. I lost two of them so far and I haven't ever gotten over it. Eddie died a long time ago.... and it still bothers me. And now we lost Lady the other day. I still cry about Eddie... -*Huggles*- I wish you luck on your new baby.
