Someone special told me I should post a story about what happened 16 days ago here. I probably wont get many replies, I don’t care, as long as someone somewhere learns from it, and maybe it will save the life of a gliders somewhere, that’s all that matters.

Last month I decided I was going to re-do the entire glider room, it was a spur-of-the-moment decision, and I often act on those. I went to the store with one of my boyfriend’s friends he had made last time he came up to visit, and we picked out some colors.

When we went back to my house, I started mixing up the paint from all of the different gallons, into one large bucket, so it would be easier to just plop the paint net thing in that my neighbor had loaned me, and start painting away. After paining half of the room, I got tired so decided to go up and post on a glider board for a while, then I got side tracked and started spending money at Sandie’s “Calle Jean” store, and by the time I looked at the clock it was already 1 o’clock in the morning, so I went back down stairs, spent some time with the furs and made them dinner, and picked up the paint stuff…but because I am constantly in the habit of doing things half-heartedly (I.e. I’m lazy) I decided to just put some paper towels around the bucket, since paint in buckets don’t dry fast at all, so that’s exactly what I did. Went back up stairs, went to bed.

The next morning I woke up, went to the lumber store to buy some more fun stuff for the glider room, I came back early afternoon, went back downstairs and to my surprise one of the covers had blown off of the bucket of paint. “How odd,” I thought. I peeked in the bucket, and saw a lump, completely covered with paint. It was bloated the size of a kitten. At that point I was thinking either it was a glider that got out, or the pain had a little. I was breathtaking and shaking, and I called my father from work and had him come home to help out. He got a stick, put it in the paint container, and lifted out the corpse. He said “Look” and I looked over and there was the glider--literally the size of a kitten, it’s eyes were still open, or atleast it looked that way through the paint, paint was so thickly covered over the lump of lifeless glider, I could only bare to look for a minute, turned around and cried and cried and cried. He put the sweet heart in a white bag, and took it outside. When I caught my breath I went in to the room, and saw a cage of 4 gliders was open! The glider was either Marilyn, Zoe, Ruby, or Max. I couldn’t stand to go back in the bag to find out which one it was.

I called Esty and she really helped me through the whole shock process. I honestly didn’t know what to do. For an advocate of caring for gliders so, and protecting them, I sure didn’t do a good job myself. I had killed one of my gliders!! I stayed up that night until 4 a.m. catching the 3 gliders that were somewhere in my house. First I saw Ruby with her little joey in the pouch trace across the room, I lured her to me with a break stick from papa john’s. That’s the only thing I could find around me and I had to catch her quick. I got her, put her in her cage, and found Marilyn next. Marilyn came right to me. So the possibilities of the corpse was in the hands of either Zoe or Max, Max was Ruby’s husband. I found Zoe, and put her back into the cage. It was Max.

Max was such a big, happy glider. He and Ruby came from a pet store as rescues to me from Alabama. These gliders have been through a lot in there little lives. Now all I can say is why? Why did this have to happen? How could this happen to my gliders? To me? I guess I never thought something like this could happen to me.

After we lost Max, Ruby started to become anti social with both people and gliders. She would not let any other glider around her, her ears were always down, she started over grooming her forehead.
I just didn’t have time right now for a severaly depressed Sugar glider. No matter how hard I tried she would not come around, so I left her alone, and she stopped eating. She had eaten her baby as well.

I honestly don’t know how some rescuers do it. I ended up having to adopt out all of my gliders, to wonderful homes, so I could spend time with her. Working a part time management shift at Hollister now, and having 2 internet businesses, I could not give all of my gliders more than 2 hours time together every night, clean them every week, wipe down cages daily, feed, chop up fresh foods, and make BML NIGHTLY (That’s how many gliders I had) The good news is these gliders aren’t in a rescue home anymore. They are in houses with large cages, knowledgeable homes, the colony went to a home in South Dakota with a glider room bigger than mine!

Now I have Ruby, just Ruby. Josh calls her Saria, says she is a little hero girl from Zelda. So actually she has two names. I have spent around $200 on pouches from glider Daydreams, and more to come…and over $150 in toys from Callejean. Now that I have less gliders I can finally afford to buy fresh, clean things again. I have learned so much in this. I have learned to completely glider proof my house just INCASE a glider happens to get out, always leave the toilet lid down, always, always look ahead in the future, to what might happen. And I can spend one on one time now with my little baby, Saria-Ruby. She is coming along now great, she’s momma’s little baby, and she knows it. She has stopped over grooming, her fur is starting to grow back a little now, her ears are up, and her eyes are bright.

I don’t like rescuing, it’s a lot harder than people think it can be. I don’t want to have a rescue home, as I am doing this all by myself. I cannot do this alone, at this point. I will take in gliders, but re home them, Gliders need more than just 2 hours-strictly, sometimes less a night, to be bonded with a human they love, and neglection is a form of abuse, I have always believed this. This is why I hate to see breeders that sell “hand tame” joeys that happen to bite, crab, and lunge. This is why I hate to see breeders in general with TONS of breeding pairs…I don’t see how they can spend that much time with them if I couldn’t with the 25+ some rescues I had, and kept having.

I know I can’t dwell on what I could have done to prevent it, I can now only dwell on what I can do to prevent it. I’m going to stop worrying about other people, and how they do things, and just stay in my own corner, with my own glider, and help people who have questions…and pound into there heads that when you own gliders, things in everyone’s life will need to change…safety is the number one thing on my list, followed by a good diet, and lots of attention.

I hope no one has to go through what I did in the past month with any of there gliders, and if anyone has ever had a glider drowned in the toilet, or a similar accident…I feel your pain.

Max, we miss you.

I am so very sorry! I know how wonderful you are to your gliders (and to anyone else's for that matter) and accidents happen to the best of us. Think about it, that paint and all those supplies were for them! You are a wonderful glider mommy and you really know your stuff. Sometimes, things just...happen. I'm terribly sorry you have to go through this and I wish there was something I could say to bring you some comfort. I'm so sorry.

Awww, hun I know how you feel more than you might realize. I had a very similar experience earlier this year... I had a brother/sister pair of rescues earlier this year. I found a home for the little girl, so I separated her from her brother so they could get used to being apart. I kept their cages right next to each other, doted on both of them, and tried my best to keep them happy. Unfortunately, the stress of being separated from his sister was too much for Little Boy. After about a week of being separated I found him dead in his cage. His little arm was reaching through the cage bars in one last ditch effort to get back to his sister... A few months later I took in another pair of rescues, Smegal and Shmi. They were in awful shape. Shmi was over-grooming her head, plucking fur on her tail, and the tiniest thing you've ever seen, only 52 grams at her heaviest. When I got her she barely weighed 40 grams, and was oh so angry. I had her for about when she suddenly died of bloat. I took her body to the vet for a necropsy and a cause was never found, my vet things that it was just caused by years of poor care... Just 9 short days after Shmi died 1 of my first joeys died. Yoshi was 5 days OOP when he died on Valentines Day...
It was just too much for me. I gave away 2 of my pairs of gliders and Smegal (to my bf @ the time). The only gliders I kept were Brodey (my first glider), Honey (his mate), Daisy (their surviving joey), and Samantha (who now lives with Smegal). It hurt so much to loose those gliders, but when I heard about another glider in need I couldn't ignore it... I now have several gliders again and I just placed a pair of males that I rescued

I think it is important that you shared this story.

Paint should not be used or stored in a room with gliders present. I think it is important to stress that not only is the actual paint a problem, but the fumes as well. A human can easily get sick from paint fumes, so I glider is many, many, many more times likely to suffer ill effects from inhaling paint fumes. If painting a room where sugar gliders are, or will be housed, the gliders should be removed completely before ANY painting takes place and should not be returned until the paint is completely dry and the room aired out.

Rest in peace sweet little Max, and have fun running and jumping and gliding and playing with the other gliders at the Rainbow Bridge.

That is tough! My sympathies go out to you. This example may prove helpful to others in that they will check and double check their cages as summer quickly approaches. So the death of your glider may not be in vain.

I'm glad you shared your story, because it is a good thing to remember and warn people about. I know it's not easy to do. I hope Ruby recovers -- she's been through a lot in her short life. I also hope you'll consider a mate for her after some grieving time. Once gliders have had mates, they often don't do well without one -- at least that's been my experience. Though you've downsized, chances are that two won't be much more effort than one.

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Thanks so much for sharing your story as that couldn't have been an easy thing to do. It gives us all a lot to think about and take into consideration to make sure nothing like that happens with our gliders as well. I can relate wtih downsizing the number of gliders you have as well as we had to do the same thing due to my health getting worse and not being able to give them all we thought they deserved. They are now in good homes that don't have a lot of gliders where they will be loved and taken care of. We loved them very much and it killed me to say goodbye, but I knew they could give them more attention then I was able to at this time in my life. We only had 9 pair, but that is still a lot of gliders. We are down to 7 gliders and three of those are retired females that we just love to death. They are older and deserve to be spoiled rotten for the remainder of their years with us. I sure hope your current glider is doing well and continues to do well. I agree with Lucy on getting her a mate, but I thought I read that you were getting her a WFB as a mate? That will be good. My thoughts are with you during this hard time.

Abra, it was very brave of you to share this story. For what it's worth, I'm proud of you.

I know we've had our differences, but I know as well as anyone how much you love your gliders. Take comfort in knowing that Max knew he was loved.

I wish you well.

Stitch mom & Gliderdad79 ~
Thank you for the kind words, that really do mean a lot. I will send your heartfelt love to my sweety pie “Saria” Ruby.

Awesome~omg I’m glad to hear I’m not alone. We seem to go through the same things, girl. I can always relate to you, I’m so glad I signed up at your board. That made me cry, especially when he was found dead on his last ditch effort to get his sister back. I bet that was a horrible feeling. L I know we cant help but to think there was something we could have done differently--and there was, but the best thing to do, like you say, is just learn from the experiences and show others what happened, and hope it doesn’t happen again.

Hey Katie,
You bring up EXCELLENT points.
I just want to confirm that the paint was not actually in the same room, but the door was open, and that’s how they got to it. But a lot of people still don’t know that even after painting gliders can still die from it--[censored], humans can and gliders are a lot smaller than them.
Your glider room looks great BTW.

Lucy,
I have paid Priscilla a large deposit for a new glider--he will be coming tome in 8 more weeks *excited* he’s a special lil boy and I know he will do wonderful with rubster. BTW I signed your death database as I feel it is important that any glider owner who has lost a loved one to do.

Danielle,
Thanks!! Priscilla said that WFB are probably the best option for her at this time because they have such a laid back disposition, however I have to wait another 8 weeks to get him--he’s a doll tho! He’s very light colored, im so excited that he will probably do good with Ruby…I just want what’s best for her, since they will be a pair now--no more gliders, just a pair, maybe trio if something happens and I had to take in another glider.
I know exactly how you feel, it is hard letting go of gliders in order to downsize, but knowing they are going to good homes + having less cages to clean, food to prepare, etc…it’s SO Much easier and you can spend time/share less toys with your gliders. All in all it’s better for the gliders and yourself. Gotta take care of yourself too!!

Hey Natalie,
Even though we have had our differences I still do respect you and your love of sugar gliders, it means a lot that you posted to this thread as it shows you really do care about gliders, and don’t hold grudges when gliders are involved; something I am still learning on how to do.
Thank you for posting to this thread, again, and congrats on your new baby boy!

Thank you for clarifying that...as it did not seem that way in your first post. I hope that you find comfort in knowing that he is in a much better place now and that time will ease your pain.

I just happen to stumble across this thread this evening. This forum is such a heartbreaker. However, accidents do happen and thus when posted here in this forum...they may save the life of another glider.

I remember Max and Ruby....they were a pair of rescues that got stuck here in the Kansas City area a few months back. I only took care of them for the night but I do remember what cuties they both were.

May time heal your heart as well as little Ruby's. Max will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.
