I've got a glider with a possible UTI who is unable to retract his penis. I have been told that some people swear by putting preperation H on it to help reduce inflamation so it can retract. Any thoughts?[color:#000000][/color]

Yes I have a glider that is just getting over a UTI and you can use Preperation H with cortizone. Make sure you get to the vet and get meds for the glider first. As a supplement to the meds you can rub it on the area. Make sure you keep a e-collar on it so it does not ingest it. Elvis has been recovering for a month now. It will take about that long for the preperation H to work.

I never would have thought you could use that. The only time I had a problem with a UTI (glider did), I used KY and took him to a 24 hour vet hospital. He was cleared up within 10 days (sooner but had to finish meds). We also gave him diluted cranberry juice to drink. OFF TOPIC: Prep H also reduces fine lines and wrinkles!

Thanks guys. I've been to the vet, got med, in an e-collar, and doing the KY. He's just so miserable in the E-collar that I was loking for anything that might make this go faster.

I know that miserable look of a suggie in an e-collar all TOO WELL. Unfortunately, time for healing can't be accelerated...all you can do is keep him as comfortable as possible.
Did you make him a "hammock" to sleep in while he's in the E-collar? (Bourbon shared this with me while Micah had one) Two embroidery hoops (about 8" around, $1.50 each at Wal-Mart) and a 16" long piece of fleece secured by the hoops at either end make a WONDERFUL hammock! I secured the hammock to the top of the cage (2 stips per end) which kept it from rocking too badly.
I also spoiled Micah ROTTEN by hand-feeding him as many mealies as he had interest in eating. It was a bit challenging to clean up the remains between his e-collar & his neck, but a chopstick worked well for THAT.

Breaks my heart, that little face. He is getting plenty of his favorite treats, apple sauce, and tons of yogurt. I was feeding him yogurt yesterday and I couldn't help but think of Forest Gump. That scene where he in the hospital after being shot in the hiney (hopefully "hiney" is a G rated enough word)and he says "You know the best part of being shot in the buttocks? The ice cream." Cecil would say the same of e-collars and yogurt.

Well, today I noticed a little purple spot. I called the vet and she said to continue to put the KY on it. If it's just a little spot, that's OK. And just to be extra diligent about keeping it lubed up. But if the whole thing turns black or purple, he definantly needs to come in immediately.Nothing to do but hope the time passes quickly. He isn't as frantically trying to get the ecollar off. And he's learning how to get around in it. It's gone from being terribly sad to kind of cute to watch him try to scamper about. He kind of lifts up on his hind legs and hops. He can scale the entire cage in a single hop. I got more mealies today and he must have eaten 15 of them. That's fine with me. I'm just glad he's eating so well. It's still really hard though. I get a knot in my stomach when I think about having to go home and see him look at me again with that little "Why are you doing this to me?" face. And I get a knot in my stomach if I'm away for more than a few hours.

Erin, If you need me to sit with him while you work, just let me know. I know the feeling of seeing them in the collars too well. Please let me know if you need anything. Angie
