just curious...i know gliders are illegal in california, massachusetts, georgia, and i think alaska and hawaii. other places require permits. i was talking to a woman i went to school with and telling her about my gliders. she said her aunt had some in florida but moved to massachusetts so she had to give them away. i'm in NM and they aren't illiegal here, but i wonder if i ever had to move to a state where they are illegal...what would i do. i don't think i could give them up. short of having trouble finding a local vet, how would anyone get caught? this is totaly out of curiousity...i am not moving...we just bought a house here in albuquerque...i really just wanted to know. so many times i see people writing about having to move and then having to give them up. i think if it were me, i would have to keep them and live on the border of a state where i could get a good vet. i don't know. i just love them too much. but if it is really common for people to get caught and then they get taken away, i'd rather find someone to love them myself. anybody know what i mean?

I don't know about other states, but I know California has laws that allow vet care for illegal animals with out the vet being obligated to turn the owner in. Also, once again in relation to California, since it is the only state I know about, the ferret legalization sites often have information about how to transport an illegal animal into the state. It seems that in California people are willing to go against the law a lot, so I would guess that is why there is so much information about owning illegal pets there. Now I'm interested in knowing what goes on in other states. I believe people generally get caught if someone turns them in. Having never owned an illegal pet I don't actually know for sure, but that seems to be what sites warn against. I agree that I would try to sneak them in, if I was in that situation.

I used to live in California and all I know is that you need to have a pardon or a permit for wildlife rehap.

Pennsylvania requires a permit before purchase...but they wont give any new permits out, so they are pretty much illegal.

NJ requires a pemit after you buy them that is only $10 and covers many animals, no inspections. all it does is give the state your $10.

There are many risks you take by keeping an illegal animal. The biggest is vet care. While it may be true that vet offices in california are not "obligated" to turn in an illegal pet, that might not mean they will not, or a member of their staff will. vet care can be impossible to find and if you go calling around advertising your need for a vet for an illegal pet then you run the risk of getting caught. These laws are in place to protect the native wildlife, and to prevent communicable disease being passed from species to species. An animal that has an immunity to a disease can pass it onto an animal without an immunity, even though the carrier might not show any signs of illness. You should obey the laws and not break them because you want to own an illegal pet. If you are forced to move into an illegal state then you give up your animals, or ask some one to hold them until you can legally own them were you live. Another way people get caught is by posting that they are breaking the laws by owning illegal animals on boards like this. I would advise anyone that is considering purchasing an animal to check their state and local laws. A person who knowingly possess an illegal animal should not own that animal. Remember illegal animals are often euthanized.

People get caught on boards like this because certain people think it is their obligation to turn people in.

some people get caught on boards like this because they are idiots giving their location...not to mention using a great site to further the black market pet trade. but anyway

[:"#CC6699"]Yeah, the only way a member of this board would get caught with gliders in an illegal state is if they have made it know that they live in an illegal state... that makes sense right? [/]

I know of people on these boards who are just waiting for the opportunity to pass information on people dealing in the black-market pet trade to the authorities. If you do not have a license, or are dealing in an illegal state, then think twice about advertising here. Officials of all kinds frequent boards like these, make bids on animals in illegal states, only to confiscate them, and/or arrest the owners. It is not a simple political statement you are making by keeping a pet illegally, do not try to justify it in any way. There is just no excuse that is worth the risk of having an animal euthanized because of for whatever reason the owner chose not to obey the law.

that's kind of what i figured. i think it's horrible for breeders to knowingly sell these wonderful babies to states where they are illegal...and even more terrible to advertise it. i don't think they should do it, but by advertising it, they run a high risk of those babies being taken and put down. poor innocent things. i just hate it when a few ruin it for everyone! thank goodness they are legal here in NM. i just love my little babies. i am so protective of them. i discourage most people from getting them because i know they don't know what they need. oops...starting to get off topic...

the other day i took my little critter to the vet here in phx. they were telling me now that california has a new and improved governor that many of the animals that are illegal now will not be for long. i dont know what animals are included with this or if its even true. just passing along what i was told from a vet. i would love to know because i may be moving back to cali soon.

I have heard that ferrets and suggies may be legal soon in Cali, but it is just a rumor. Apparently, Arnold is pro ferret, so that may be a good thing for potential Cali owners. By the way, I could NEVER give up my gliders if I moved to a state where they are illegal. They are part of the family and I would take every precaution to make sure they were never confiscated. Guess I wouldn't move there.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has said he would sign a bill to legalize ferrets in California if the bill comes across his desk. However, I didn't see any mention about sugar gliders.
