Chloe came to us several weeks ago with the help from several in the glider community. She had self mutilated and only had a stub of a tail with the bone protruding. But the worst part was that she had mutilated her cloaca area to the point we did not know if she could be saved. She could not have a BM by her self and had to be expressed each morning and night. The colon and uretha tube had been dislocated inside her. Blood was caked all over the lower part of her body and mixed with feces made her look even more hopeless.

We started working with her. Her flesh was so infirm that the vet could not even operate on her tail because it would not hold stitches. Even after we got her in condition so that she could be operated on the vets were afraid to attempt repairing her cloaca area. We consulted with and saw a total of six vets. Finally we came up with a plan and Monday finally had major surgery. The rest of the tail was removed and the rectum was repaired. The colon and uretha tube was re-connected.

Against our policy for the first time we allowed one of our gliders to stay at the clinic over night. Chloe seems to have survived the surgery with flying colors. We picked her up form the vet yesterday around 4 PM. She is still groggy but I think she is going to do ok.

She is in an e collar and will be on pain meds and antibiotics for a couple of weeks. I hope everything goes well from here. This operation will be a major break through for saving these little self mutilators.

I am attaching a picture of Chloe that was taken the day before the operation.

Omigosh, what a darling! How sad she had to go through all of that, the poor girl.

Best of luck, Chloe!

Chloe is a very special little girl that God entrusted to some very special people because He knew they would never give up on her, never. Thank you Mary and Charlie for the many hours of dedication you spent with this little girl as well as many others. The gliders in this world need you and those like you to save them from the many abuses and neglectful treatment they endure. We love you for all the good you do. Thanks too, to all the dedicated vets out there that go above and beyond to help our babies.

Super big hugs, get well wishes and lots of love to Chloe Holcombe!!

Help me…

Someone? Anyone? Please? I don’t understand what is going on…
I hurt and I don’t know why.
Is something I can’t see attacking me?
I fight back and it only hurts more.
This attacker is strong, relentless…
I must defeat him.

I can’t do it alone. I’m loosing the war.
I don’t want to die…
Please someone, anyone…HELP ME!

Can anyone hear me?

Who are you? Are you my attacker?
Are you who is hurting me?
Beware…I will fight back!
I’ll bite you too!
You will not win!

Who are these giant creatures holding me?
Their voices are so gentle…
So soothing…
Did they hear my cries?
Are they here to help me fight my attacker?
Can I trust them?

What is this thing you are putting on me?
Don’t you know that with this thing around my neck,
I can’t defend myself against my attacker?

Don’t make me eat that! It is poison!
It tastes like bad stuff, so bitter.

I’m so tired now…but my attacker seems to have stopped for a little while.
Is he gone?
Is he done attacking?
Did I kill him?
Will he be back?
So tired…

I feel so safe in these giant’s hands.
I can hear their heart beat.
Strong and steady…lulling me to sleep.

Yet more giants around me…
What are they doing to me?
It hurts but somehow I think they are trying to help.
Together are we going to slay my attacker?

The attacker is gone!
I still hurt but it is different now.
I am healing.
I am becoming stronger again!
The giants are still here but they are so gentle.
How will I ever tell them thank you?

The kindness they have shown me…
The wonderful food they have given to me…
The gifts they have given me…
Never asking for anything in return…
Except for me to be strong…
Except for me to not give up…

They killed my attacker!
They saved me!
They heard my cries!
They are my heros!

I hope the love I can show will be thanks enough.
Love,
Chloe

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

Wow, your dedication is amazing. My prayers are with Chloe. You must have been talking to vets all over the country! I know around here it is difficult to find even one that sees gliders.

Mary, Charlie...Once again Many Many thanks for the love you both have for these lil ones. The gliders that have past through your home and those that are still there, each receiving love and the best of care possible. Thank you for all that you both do.

Such a darling little girl. Any idea what started her chewing?

Can you attach a photo of what she looks like since the surgery?

Sending "Get Well Wishes" for a very speedy recovery.

And Mary and Charlie... you guys take care of yourselves too.

Chloe thanks everyone for their support. And thanks Dancing for the poem.

Chloe is feeling better this morning. She has gotten over being put to sleep. She is eating by herself and pooping without having to be stimulated. And it looks normal.

We have to keep her on pain meds and antibiotics for a couple of weeks. She hates taking medicine. She will constantly turn her head away from the syringe. Then after you finally do get it in her mouth we have to watch. She will spit it out if given the chance! If you think that is fun you should see her when I have to wash her bottom and apply silvadene.

We are not sure what started the mutilating but suspect that it was by improper handling. (Grabbing her by the tail). Just a guess.

Thanks for the update on Chloe, I can understand her aversion to the meds…lol… now if they thought the way I do… “Better living through chemicals” …lol… they would be lining up for those pain killers…lol… I am glad she is on the road to recovery…
