How long can frozen fruits be kept in the freezer before it has to be thrown out? Ex: cut and diced melon. What other fruits can be frozen up and kept?

Mine seems to be fine as long as I keep it covered. A month maybe.
Just make sure to keep it wrapped up tight.

I also freeze grapes and then cut them in half when frozen solid. It's easy with a sharp knife.
I also use blueberries that are already frozen in the bag at the store. They LOVE them!!!
I think that just about any fruit can be frozen. Just watch the watermelon. After you cut it in chunks for freezing, make sure to keep the pieces seperated while freezing up. They're so watery that when they freeze they really stick together in one big chunk. I do it on a plate and then when it's frozen I add it to the rest of the bowl of frozen fruits.

I hope this helped.

You can freeze pretty much all their fruits and veggies and they should stay good for a long time if you keep them in a freezer zip lock bag

I use peaches, apples, pears, grapes, cantelopue, papaya, and blueberries.

I washed the fruit first. Then cut up into small pieces and wash again. Then I dry with a papertowles (keeps ice from freezing on the fruit) and freeze on a flat surface (I use cookie sheets) without touching other pieces of fruit. One frozen, I pop off the cookie sheet and then store in freezer baggies. I usually only cut enough fruit to last me about a month and the fruit stays fresh the whole time.

I chop my fresh fruit into little pieces the gliders can hold in their hands to munch on. I put the chopped fruit into a Tupperware container, and it lasts about a month for my three babies. I strain out the juice; otherwise it's just a giant ice cube with fruit inside. I do have to take a knife or ice pick and chisel the fruit apart. It usually ends up in little tablespoon-sized chunks.

Yeah, that's pretty much how mine ends up. But I'm going to start freezing it using a baking tray first and then transferring it into a tupperware or a ziplock bag. Now the only issue I have is with the frozen vegetables. There are some packs that have disclaimers saying Do Not Eat Raw. I'm going to steam it in the microwave before offering it to the glider.

I'm not sure why you couldn't eat them raw (especially the carrots). Steaming and cooking depletes some of the nutrients, unfortunately (it ends up in the liquid that's discarded). I noticed in another thread you mentioned cutting them up and freezing them. If you can't find a frozen mix that you don't have to cook a bit, that might be the way to go. I buy an organic frozen mix of peas, carrots, corn, and green beans. They eat them frozen as well as thawed. I just dish out the portion in their bowl each night.

I have no idea why it can't be eaten raw. I'm going to try to look for organic frozen veggies. I'm only able to head off to the supermarket this weekend so for now I'm still going to have to use the frozen veggies. I'd rather steam them (although I am aware that it depletes the nutrition) than risk giving frozen veggies that have disclaimers saying "Do Not Eat Raw" to my glider And yup, yup if I can't find the organic veggies I am planning to cut and freeze my own vegetables

My glider isn't too fond of veggies though -- how do you get them to start taking a liking to it? He won't eat it on his own in a separate compartment on his dish tray neither will he eat it when it's been mixed with his BML.

Cheers --

You may have already said, and I missed it....but what veggies are you feeding?

Mine get the frozen mix of green beans, carrots, peas, and corn.

I haven't met a glider yet that didn't love corn. Mine like carrots the least but gobble up the green beans and peas too. I never give any other veggies. The get the mix each night.

Also, if the gliders are young, it may take them a while to develop a like for veggies.

Wow. I buy small fruit cups from the food store but it dosn't last long before I have to buy another one. So if I just dice it up and put it in a Zip Lock bag and freeze it I can just fed thoes frozen pieces? That sounds Ten times better

I personally wouldn't buy the pre-cut fruits from the grocery store. I've worked in a produce department, and while I was clean, the cleanliness standards aren't as good as in my my kitchen. I like to know that I am the one washing (double and triple washing) and cutting up the fruit.

Hey I just wanted to pass this info along, I use it and it works great!

I found that when freezing on trays, it becomes a hassle to anyone who want to get into the freezer, I don't know how many times fruit ended up splattered on my kitchen floor! so I figured out that if you freeze the friut in the Ice Cube trays that you make your BML in it works wonders! I just fill up the hole with fruit and freeze, then all I have to do is toss a perfectly proportioned fruit or veggie chunk in thier bowl! No knifes, sawing, hacking, crying, needed!

krispifsu --> The same veggies you're giving your glider. : ) Only the frozen pack I bought has a disclaimer that says "Do Not Eat Raw". It's the Tesco UK brand. So I'm like : /

Going to try to look for another brand or the organic frozen veggies which I really hope I can find.

IzzysMom --> With regards to stuffing the fruits into the ice cube trays, I'm going to try that! sounds superb! Thanks for sharing the idea.

Don't know how it's done in the UK, but in the States I believe the veggies are blanched before freezing. If Tesco has a toll-free number, why don't you call them to see if they blanch them and why they have that disclaimer on them?

am I the only one that buys the frozen dole mixed fruit? It comes in a large ziplock bag, you can get it at walmart. It has strawberries, grapes, honeydew, pineapple and peaches.

I just bought that today! I was looking for frozen fruit to add to the apples and canteloupe I have now. As I was picking up each separate bag that was about 16oz, it was really adding up. I saw this 4lb bag of Dole mixed fruit and it was only $6.44. So, I decided that was the way to go. I don't really like using fresh because I tend to forget stuff in the fruit drawers and then I have a big mess to clean up. This seemed like a really good way to get variety!

I've never seen the Dole fruit before... maybe tomorrow I'll walk the extra mile to SuperFresh and see if they have it. I tend to prefer frozen fruit to fresh because it spoils faster than they can eat it, and I feel bad if I eat too much of the fruit I bought for them, heh!

I tried the Dole frozen fruit mix. Three snubbed noses. They didn't like any of it. That's the stuff I tried chopping, and later blending, and they still wouldn't eat it.

I've found the bags of frozen fruits in the "frozen desserts" area of some grocery stores - near Cool Whip. Also, if there's an ethnic frozen food section, I've found frozen mango and papaya there - even my chinchilla likes these fruits.

I haven't tried freezing apples. I would think they'd get mushy when defrosted. I just cut and eat and share slivers as a snack to my babies.

I cut up apples and freeze them all the time. They are not mushy when they unthaw, that I have ever seen. It really saves time to cut and freeze them in advance .

Watermelon gets really mushy when its defrosted. I no longer freeze watermelon up. I just give him the fresh ones 2-3 times a week.

Regarding getting the little critters started on veggies: When I got Samson and Sheba, they were eating baby food sweet potatoes...but they made a big mess with them. I also wound up throwing out a portion of jars of baby food, because I wanted to give them variety. Now when I open a jar or any fruit or meat babyfood, I freeze the remainer in condiment cups. Once it is frozen, I transfer it to a zip lock baggie.

I have found that if you buy a small sweet potato, and slice them off little hunks just like an apple, they love it raw! The potato will seal over on the cut edge, and I just slice that away the next time...they eat a couple of slices daily.

As for frozen grapes, I slice them in half before I freeze them to avoid trying to slice them when they are hard. (and slippery!)You can also slice bananas and freeze them but be sure to make it in small hunks, they usually will only eat a little at a time.
