I was wondering I have the mealies that you put in the regifator(SP??) and they come back to life. How long before I shouldnt feed them to them? They usually run out in 1-2weeks the 50ct ones.

If they are not black then they are fine. If they die and turn black just throw them out. What I do with mine is buy the 1000 count and freeze them. They last a really long time that way.

The company I deal with recommends leaving your mealworms in the fridge, but taking them out once a week for a period of 24 hours to allow molting. Apparently they are "better" (or healthier) if fed after molting. You can also gutload at about that time.
(oh, what odd things we learn through having gliders... LOL)

I don't feed any mealies that are dead. You can tell for sure they are dead if they have turned black -- but I also choose not to feed ones that are dried up and hard or too squishy.

Mealworms will last for several months when kept in the refrigerator, and as Elmer stated, you need to take them out once or twice a week, let them warm up, allowing them to eat and hydrate. I place a paper towel on top of the oatmeal bedding and just throw in some lettuce and leave them out for most of the day.

You're doing fine, and they should be fine to feed, like you said 5 minutes usually you can tell if they are wiggly. AND if they aren't wiggly but still the light brown/tan color, not moving..... they may be getting ready to molt, but still fine to feed.

cycy, When you say several months - how about 8 months? (Whoops - that's 9 months, I didn't count my fingers right!!!) I ordered 1M from Grubco last November and just ran out recently. Of course, I only have one glider and I don't give them to him every day, so maybe I set some kind of record for the longevity of mealworms kept in the frig. I kept them in oatmeal and did get them out about every 1 or 2 weeks, placed a damp paper towel or leaf of lettuce in their container and left them out for about 24 hours to eat/rehydrate before returning to the frig. It goes without saying that I did lose some that turned brown, but Stryder still had plenty of mealworms.

Do you have a special method on Freezing your mealies? I would be very interested in it. How long will they last before turning black?
