DISCLOSURE it's not great news, so if you're already a bit blue, please don't read.... These times are hard enough right now... Sorry I haven't been keeping up on Dot, but it's been a hard road with a lot of decisions to make. Dot's last dose of antibiotics was 4 weeks ago. Dot's lump or mass began to grow rapidly as soon as a week after her last dose of antibiotics. And she started losing weight. She lost 8 grams within a week and a half of her last antibiotic dose. She was very active, playing as normal. Appetite starting to drop. 2 weeks ago, she dropped another 10 grams mass growing to double the size (and was more round and had the feel and size of an English walnut) of her last antibiotic dose. Energy level dropped, but still insisted on climbing around in the big cage - bit more carefully, as her lump has settled between her pouch and left hip. It caused her to walk and place her left leg out further to get around the mass. I tried to make getting around easy for her by lowering hammocks, fixing more bridges across the cage, but little miss stubborn insisted to take her normal routes by climbing up, hanging by the ceiling and climbing down the other side ( she's still trying to hide her illness) Last week when I checked on her, she was breathing heavily and was severely dehydrated. I fed her mealies and gave her doses of honey water which she took greedily until I thought she would drown. She instantly perked up and insisted to go back to the cage. She actually went by herself, and wouldn't settle back in her pouch until it was hung up where it belonged and cage door closed. She's stopped eating staple and only eats a few pieces of corn, honey water (we keep a fresh dish in there every day changed every 12 hours). Mealies, pine nuts, a few bites of fresh apple (I keep in her pouch during the day) and she wanted a piece of bread crust. I weighed her Sunday and she had lost another 4 grams. Monday we took her to the vet and their scale said she lost another 6 grams... She went from 152 grams 4 weeks ago to 126gr. The vet estimated the mass to weigh 30 of those precious grams... vet said to watch her and if see seems uncomfortable, give her a half dose of her pain meds. Yesterday she had started licking the mass next to her pouch so we started her back on pain meds. Perked her up briefly. But she's very tired. So in the last 24 hours, she's down to only white soft shell mealies ( recently shed their skin) honey water and fresh water in the silo, a bite of 1 piece of corn, apple tucked in with her, her pain meds and a crumb of bread that she just holds... It's only a matter of time... Prayers that she passes peacefully... On a side note, Stewie has been helping Dot. He gets her up every night, grooms her, encourages her to eat and drink. He pushes her out of the pouch and onto the shelf just an inch below the pouch... If it weren't for his encouraging her, she may have already passed... I think she appreciates all he does for her...

I know this is tough and I pray she passes peacefully so you don't have to make the decision.

This just breaks my heart for Dot and for you/hubby also for Stewie. She is such a little fighter, and I'm sure she doesn't want to leave her family here.
You've done everything humanly possible for her. Letting her know she is loved now as you are doing is what she needs. She will let you know when she needs the extra love to make the final journey.
All my thoughts and prayers are with you all

So this story ends with helping Dot over the rainbow here: http://www.glidercentral.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/1422848/dot-has-passed#Post1422848We chose not to get a necropsy. We had many hard chooses to make, and for us and Dot, we feel we did what was best. Having exploratory surgery may have been an option at one point to have the lump removed, but that comes with a lot of risk and recovery time and being in a cage alone while healing. You see, she never really wanted a human touch, she only tolerated us, and only for short periods. She would rather be alone or the alpha of her colony. We learned to love her anyway. Thank you for all of your support through this difficult time. It was very comforting

Your description of Dot never really wanting a human touch and only tolerating you for short periods struck a chord. Judah was exactly the same way for me so it really hit me when he jumped to me and clung on what ended up being his last night. There is something oddly bonding with the irascible ones, isn't there?

Yes there is... She kinda forced us to love her just as she was. She loved to here her name and we always approached her with "Hello beautiful". From her cage, she would sit on a hammock close to us. We would talk hum or sing to her and she loved it. But stick your finger up to the bars where she was and off she would go if it didn't have a treat attached. She was careful and polite when taking treats too. Almost a contradiction to her personality.
