Hello all! I’m brand new and wanting to be sure that I choose the best potential companion. Correct me if I’m wrong but it seems females are better in that area usually. And I plan to only get 1-at least for the time being unless the poor thing got depressed or something. What age is best? I would assume younger is better as long as they weren’t ripped away from mom too soon, but I’m much better versed in carnivores and could be entirely wrong. Also where is a good place to acquire a baby? I would assume pet stores are not ideal. There are advertising breeders near me in Virginia but I know very little about them- for all I know they could be the best or as bad to gliders as Marshal Farms is to ferrets and that’s saying a heck of a lot. I only work 4.5 hours a day and planned to do lots of bonding pouch/tent time as well as the best possible diet (I feed organic homemade raw meat diets to my carnivores-I have an 8 year old Pomchi who has been on everything from ubiquinol to glucosamine/chondroitin and krill oil and even anti aging protocols since she was 8 weeks old if that gives you an idea) so I’m going to do my part. But how do I choose the absolute best baby for me? My father just died and at 27 I was far from ready and really need the love and affection I hope to reap. I would even be getting home from work every night at 9 to play and have no issues with mealworms/ etc bc I also keep pet turtles. Thanks in advance:)

I haven't noticed much difference of affection based off of sex. The most bonded ones I have are 2 males and 1 female. In colony 2 I have 2 males that show the most interest in me and don't
run away with a treat they stay to get petted. I think it is mostly based off of how much time and effort you put into them, and there personality, not there sex. but others may have different experiences.
I would really suggest getting 2, its really no harder then having 1, food costs are minimal. And having that other glider curled up in a pouch providing warmth to each other is hard to replace
every night, keep in mind, I don't believe much in depression or something, I have had single gliders and they have been fine until I put them in a colony. but they are colony animals cause they
like the company and grooming and love and warmth of others and its only impact on you would be potential increased vet costs if they get ill. that imo anyway.

I agree with everything said above, especially the fact that both sexes are capable of giving you affection if the bonding process is done in their time.

I am so very sorry for your loss. With both my parents gone now, I know how very hard it is to say good bye when you are no ready.

Seeing posts here from people who bring gliders home when the glider/s have a job (emotional support) only to be disappointed, is also very hard. Most gliders do not bond instantly to their human and take some time to get used to their new home (sights, sounds, smells). Some do bond more quickly than others, but some take some time and patience. More than some had ever thought they would.

Your patience will be rewarded, however, just know it may take some time before you have that cuddly little furball you are hoping for.

Welcome to Glider CENTRAL!

I agree with what everyone has said so far.

I have also found that when they have a buddy they learn from each other, so if one is fearless and comes to you early on the other one might come to you sooner than if it was a single glider.

My condolences on losing your father. It isn't easy to loose your parents.

I recently got two gliders from thepetglider.com and I'm very happy with them. I ended up with 2 girls who are 12 weeks old. I've had them for about 2 weeks and we've just recently started doing tent time, but they acclimated very quickly to my entire family.
