Hello everyone!
My name is Gabby and I am new to this forum.
So I have a question for everyone I have a 6 sugar gliders. They started out as 4 but I wasn't aware when I rescued them that the males were not neutered one male was the son of 1 of the females(was already weaned off the mom) and the other female was pregnant and just had the 2 babies not too long ago they are starting to wean off the mother now. So my questions are that I called the vet and the vet said that there is a high mortality rate when neutering them. I do not want to have any more babies and I don't not want imbreeding that being said the vet said I was better off separating them so I'm wondering 1 how I should go about that, 2) if that is just bad advice, and 3 will that cause problems since they are colony animals.

I have 2 extra large 6 foot cages, 3 males, 3 females.
I dont know if my vet just didnt want to do it or this is a true fact.
The next closest vet is 2 hours away.

Thank you in advance!

:welcomegc: So glad to have you here.

I would say that is bad advice. Neutering is not high risk IF you have a confident vet doing the procedure. It is a relatively easy surgery and done correctly will cause little to no problems for the glider.

If the vet you are talking about is the one two hours away, I would strongly suggest you ask him/her to consult with a vet who had successfully done neuters.

Please tell us exactly where you are located so we can point you to our vet databse.

Yorkville vet in Illinois will neuter for about 50.00 per glider. I would get all the boys neutered and keep them all together.

Oh, Welcome to GliderCENTRAL!

Hi! And wave :welcomegc:

You have been given some great advice!

I would ask the vet what procedure they use when neutering. I would recommend not to shave the area too. it could cause overgrooming. You see, gliders will groom what may "feel" different.

Feather, do you know this vet?

I haven't met the vet in Yorkville, yet. He does come recommended by a friend.

It is only recommended that males get neutered. When it comes to females there is significantly more danger.
