Hi all!!
Was able to get rid of the ants finally (fingers crossed) and wrapped the cage in some plastic to try to protect the walls. It didn't make it all the wY around but I cut some off the bottom and hung it overlapping so hopefully that does the trick.
That being said, I'm on to the next problem. It's been a few months with my cage. I've washed the inside toys, did the wheel and wooden pieces today, and wash the pouches/fabric stuff as it starts to smell. My issue is more the whole cage seems to smell! I wash and wipe the trays down every day for food scraps, but there are so many on the bars too! And I try to get them all but I worry that's causing some of the almost sweet smell I'm getting? I just don't want to attract more bugs. I'm in a second floor apartment so the "hose it down" trick isn't really easy. I can do it if I need to but any ideas on cleaning/catching it all?! I think I probably got a too big cage for my 2 girls but I wanted to give them a ton of space so maybe I screwed myself there....?

I've been cleaning nonstop since all my animals are throwing fits lately and I'm at my wits end so I'm sorry if this all sounds crazy!!!

My cage is on second floor as well, I cannot get it out and hose it down. I use vinegar/ water solution I mix in a spray bottle. I spray a sponge, a 2 sided kind I get from Dollar Tree I believe, that comes in a two-pack. These sponges last a while and the soft side is very squishy, it goes between the bars some. But every few months I use my hand held steamer as well.

I might have to look into a steamer. Is it like the ones used on clothes?! I have vinegar and water mixed up and I have a sponge I've been scrubbing with. I'll see maybe I can scoop them out for a bit and I'll just have to go bar by bar lol. Such a pain but now that I know about them and their habits I'm trying to keep up with them. They've gotten so big and food gets all over more now.

They grow up so fast *sniff tear**

I got a glider kitchen and it's reduced the Critter Love getting splashed all over the cage and helped a bit with the fruit and veggies all over the litter pan. I spot clean it every morning and take out any fruits or veggies that get thrown in it but a decent amount stay in the glider kitchen.

The sponge I use has a very soft spongy on one side and a scrubby texture on the other. I use the scrubby side when needed, but most of the time the soft side does the job. It's squishy enough that when pressed to the cage it sinks between the bars to a point. Now, I usually only wipe down the inside this way regularly every 1 to 2 weeks, it's usually several weeks that goes between wiping the outside as well and usually that's when I'm going to steam clean.

The steamer I use is Scunni hand held that I purchased years ago when I had lizards and I used this for cleaning their enclosures. I don't know that it's for clothing, with the attachments that came with it, I believe it's more for cleaning.

I always take my gliders out on cage cleaning day. I'll leave them in for touch-up/spot cleaning during the week, but for cleaning the cage they are taken out. I place them (in sleeping pouch) into a canvas carrier, but a bonding pouch probably would work as well if that's more convenient for you.

I still wish I could get the cage out for a good scrub and hosing once or twice a year, but so far I've never had a living arrangement where that was easily possible with out dismantling the cage.

I use fabric shower curtains that I snag at thrift stores to keep the food fights enclosed! :D

I've hung partvof a shower curtain around it!!! And I scrubbed everything with vinegar water. It's my better. I still need another shower curtain as the cage was too big for the one, but it's so much easier to keep the food contained. A fabric one is a great option!!!! That way I can throw it in the wash. Maybe I'll try a fleece blanket around, although I don't want to add to the heat.

Which cage do you have? I had a Lrg. Sturdy, same size as Congo and a twin flat bed sheet worked great on it. I use cotton parcel (I think that's what it's called). I attach it with plastic clips, lengthwise, the print side facing inside the cage, then fold it back on the exposed side so it looks good from that side and looking in. Very easy to wash & dry, and not too hot.

Yes! Thank you, that's the right word. I typed it and it didn't look quite right, I was too tired to look it up, lol.

So while the shower curtain has worked well, I think a sheet might be even better, it'll fit around quick and easy and I can wash it instead of trying to get the plastic clean.
I keep smelling an almost sweet smell when I get close to the cage. I believe the smell is yrine but I honestly don't know. I try it wipe down the trays with vinegar water and that helps for a bit. I think I might try to take the wooden stick thing I have in there and see if maybe that will help the smell? I also try to scrub the wheel but I worry about ripping the mesh. Maybe that can be cleaned in a better way? I don't want to submerge it cause of the bearings and such.

I take my wheel out sometimes and soak it in the kitchen sink with enough suds and water to just soak the mesh with wheel face down. Then rinse. I wipe down back and dry. If you have the sandpaper nail trimmers, they will have to be removed before soak. It is probably your smell.

Alan,

You can put those shower curtains in the washing machine.

Just so you know.

You sure can. You can also add a bath towel to the load to help get it clean. Might consider purchasing the ones from Dollar Tree or similar for $1. That way you don't feel like you have lost much when they tear. You will find they last longer than you think.

Just don't put the shower curtain in the dryer. It will come out looking all :nanana:
