I hope this is where i'm supposed to post this. Sorry if it's not!

Bear has never been one to chew holes in his pouches, but now that the joey's are here he's been destroying them (the pouches, not the joeys lol!). The first one he chewed through came with him when i got him about a year ago; fleece on the inside and some sort of thick cotton fabric on the outside. He's had it almost a year with no issues but now that there are babies he's destroying it. The other one is just fleece. not super thick, but not the really thin stuff either. He's got a fairly large hole near the bottom but it has to hold them over until i can get another one made, hopefully tonight. Is it common for new dads to chew like this? Could he just be bored while babysitting the kids? i hope this doesn't last!!!

I'm going to throw this idea out there as to why I think your gliders are now putting holes in their pouches....

Since gliders are not domesticated animals, some do not know that the pouches ARE their complete nest. So when some have joey's, they are looking to "bury" their babies deeper in the "nest" to protect them. Not realizing that they are actually destroying their little home.

My suggestion to you would to try some blankies in their pouch and see how that works...or you may have to try nesting boxes or something all together different.

Thank you! I have some of the glider safe plastic grid that people are using for making PVC cages. Would that work as a nesting box if i made it a cube then put lots of fleece in it?

Yes, that would work fine.

I agree with Sherri. I have a breeding female who was a bit Pouch protective when I got her so i put her in a oe pouch. She worked thru her prob and i put her in a reg pouch. She then started to chew holes. I put her back in the oe which she does not chew but she was insecure in it. So i ended up putting her in a bucket pouch with tons of blankets. She now makes a nest and does not chew holes. She is due to oop her new joeys in a week so cross out fingers she does not start up again.

I have a few gliders who have decided to chew though their pouch's. I have found that if I add a lot more blankets they will not chew. It seems like they want to be good a buried in their pouch's.

That is not a traditional pouch where the glider is deep down inside the pouch. An OE pouch is one that is typically very shallow with short side where the glider can see out of the pouch when laying down inside of it. Think of a shallow bowl. There are many different styles and looks.

The concept is to "open the environment" up so the glider can see what is going on around them. Just please be aware that simply because a glider crabs in its regular pouch does NOT mean it is pouch protective, nor does it mean it needs intervention to this behavior.

Some gliders seem to like the OE pouches, but I have heard many that, as Melissa stated, are not comfortable in them.

I agree. I have a breeding pair that chewed threw their fleece pouch when they had joeys. The pouch had a fleece liner. They chewed through the first liner and they would peep out of the little hole. I think they were trying to dig deeper in the pouch and protect their joeys. I also added extra blankets. Because at first they would pull the top of the pouch down as if they were trying to cover up.

I have a pair that chewed holes in their pouches as fast as I put them in the cage. I talked it over with the amazing lady who makes me pouches and she put a dark denim on the inside, instead of fleece. They stopped chewing!

Thank you everyone! i made a nesting box, but they despise it...... so i gave them a piece of fleece to have in the pouch with them and that seems to have solved the problem completely smile
