Your best bet is to write letters to your congressmen and women.

Find out which congressman helped to make gliders legal in Georgia, maybe he would right a letter of recommendation to the congress in PA to help out.

I do know for a fact that there are a lot of illegal sugar gliders living in PA. This information was given to me by a veterinarian that used to practice in PA.

Good Luck

Oh my god...this was the only thing I had to look forward to! >=(

You're right, my best bet it to write to the guy who helped them be legal in Georgia..

Write him a letter telling him your situation and where you live and ask him to write a letter to them, have him send you a copy of it.

Then you send a copy of that letter with ever letter you write. Just keep plugging along.

Good Luck,

Hi Jack!

Sugar Gliders are also illegal here in Fairfax County VA. They are legal just about everywhere else in VA but Fairfax and Prince William Counties. Guess where I live!!? I am just as frustrated and upset as you. I started a petition at change.org to have them removed from the Illegal Exotics list. Already have 300+ signatures, and I just put it up there on the 5th. I have also written a letter to the governor. I am also writing a letter to the Senator who helped changed the GA law.

I agree! Don't understand, suppose some say that they're exotic and should be left in the wild.. but I love them in my home <3

I recently found that out as well, but Pocket Pets is allowed to sell them in Fairfax County when the pet-expos come here, so I don't get it! I'm originally from Fairfax County and so I'm glad I waited until I moved to get my trio!

As long as your license is valid, you can sell in nearly any county. And it IS legal to sell them in Fairfax County, they allow it (Prince William, too), with proper documentation. Most places, however, will require the company to have some sort of signage that reads they are illegal in "xxxx" County.

Glad to hear you moved before you got your gliders...I think this is SO important. It's hurts me to think about those that are in the illegal places and what could happen. I currently have rescues FROM those illegal counties, they were confiscated by authorities because they were turned in. One day, your gliders are fine. Next day, you find out that someone who either doesn't like you or someone who happened to see you with them turned you in and their world is turned upside down. JMO, but it's very unfair and selfish to risk that happening to them.

I haven't been to the pet expo this past year, but from my recollection, they didn't have any prominent signs about not being able to own them in Fairfax or Prince William counties and certainly weren't saying it verbally. What a dumb law to allow them to sell in the county, but not at least require proof of NOT living in the county to purchase them. The pet expo travels around so most of the people attending were from Fairfax County!

Call the Animal Warden in PA. Ask them to tell you the code for the law. They'll give it to you.

I have spoken to this lady:
Melissa Jo Knepper, MBA

Legislative Director to Senator Richard Alloway II

187 Main Capitol Building

PO Box 203033

Harrisburg, PA 17120-3033

Direct Line: (717) 772-2929

Fax: (717) 772-2753

Cellular Phone: (717) 377-1821

Email: mknepper@pasen.gov

House bill 1398 passed the house on 1/24 to change the definition of exotic which is what is primarily causing the problem. We now have to wait for it to pass the Senate then be signed by the governor.

If I travel down the road 45 min to 1 1/2 hrs. in soooooo many directions I hit at least 3 states where they are legal. SO GOD BETTER HELP OUR ECOSYSTEM because gliders do not know where state lines are and migration happens! Which is their resoning behind this dumb and really stupid law. I am so very passionate about this subject because there is not a single solitary reason why gliders should be prohibited ANYWHERE! When I spoke to the lady I referenced above I pointed out to her how the reasoning she tried feeding me was so incredibly flawed. Not native to PA - ok well we have opossums all over the highways in PA last I checked and Cockatoos (also from Austrailia) are perfectly legal to own. THEY DO NOT MAKE SENSE!!!!

Yep, I work in Hanover, PA and live in Hampstead, MD. Funny how my 20 minute commute to work puts me in a place where my suggies are illegal.

But, alas, Fennec foxes are illegal in MD and not some other states :tant2:

Same here, I live in Bordentown, NJ but work in Morrisville, PA. I was thinking about moving to PA because the cost of living is a little cheaper, but since sugs aren't allowed it was a no-no. Anyone know if we've made any progress on this?

etrnalsunshine, We have till the end of the year for HB1398 to pass the Senate before the bill dies. They need to get it scheduled from what I understood when talking to Ms. Knepper. I posted her info above in hopes that people will call in support.

I just found this article and wanted to share:
http://www.humanesociety.org/news/press_releases/2012/01/the_hsus_applauds_1262012.html

Good news for gliders in PA!!! Not so good news for other exotics.

I did call the game commission, they told me you can no longer purchase a permit to own them so if you didn't have one already you can't get one now.

No sorry I wasn't insinuating that the article meant that they are now legal. I was happy that the Humane Society is supporting HB 1398 because once that passes the Senate and gets signed by the governor then they will be legal. We need big time support and a Humane Society thumbs up certainly can't hurt the cause ya know. The Zanesville, OH incident also raised some eyebrows in many states so in my opinion as far as gliders go it is all going to boil down to the defintion of "exotic" as contained within the verbage of the law as it is written. So I wonder if this even has the potential to change laws in other areas...honestly I can't help but think that lawmakers are more concerned with animals that could actually hurt someone (not gliders) but because of the term "exotic" they are currently getting lumped in that category.

There was a huge article about how they were legal in PA now... but I am still searching for it... and I can;t find it, according to wildlife f & g, they are illegal however a court case has been won in this state ruling they are. Interesting huh?

Alright gotcha. HB 1398 does say that "The term [exotic] shall not be construed to include any member of the class... Petauridae (gliders and striped possums)" here, so they are directly specified as not illegal. When do we find out if this bill passed?

Edit: This link says final passage was on January 24th, 2012, and in the link above it states that it should take effect in 60 days. So does that mean that as of March 24, 2012 Sugar Gliders are legal in PA?

Here is what they sent me "direct quote"

It is illegal to import or possess sugar gliders in Pennsylvania. However, there is legislation in the General Assembly that would legalize them. Please see the link to this House Bill 1398: amended
