Dallas animal statutes state:

Domestic animals are accepted in Dallas, and that Domestic animal is defined:

(15) DOMESTIC ANIMAL means:
(A) livestock;
(B) a dog;
(C) a cat;
(D) a ferret;
(E) any bird, other than one in the Falconiforms or Strigiforms Order, that is commonly kept as a human's companion;
(F) any "pocket pet," such as a mouse, hamster, gerbil, guinea pig, or rabbit, that is commonly kept as a human's companion;
(G) any fish, such as a goldfish or tropical fish, that is commonly kept as a human's companion; and
(H) any non-venomous and non- constrictor reptile or amphibian that is commonly kept as a human's companion.

This is what is listed as Prohibited:

(28) PROHIBITED ANIMAL means:
(A) a "dangerous wild animal" as that term is defined in Section 822.101 of the Texas Health and Safety Code, as amended;
(B) a margay, badger, wolf, dingo, elephant, hippopotamus, rhinoceros, non-human primate (other than a spider monkey or capuchin), crocodile, alligator, caiman, gavial, venomous amphibian or reptile, racer, boa (other than a red-tail boa), water snake, python (other than a ball python), hawk, eagle, vulture, and owl; and
(C) any hybrid of an animal listed in Paragraph (A) or (B) of this subsection (other than a dog-wolf hybrid).

So.... not sure where you are getting that sugar gliders aren't legal in Dallas?

All I asked for was verification (and I can do that anywhere I'd like) and no one is debating! You're the only one that keeps saying that. It doesn't matter to me who posted it or where. It's something *I* want to know in order to update the article about legal places on the site that *I* contribute info to. Period. Hence the one sentence in my original post, "Can someone verify?". There are members there that don't come here and vice versa. This isn't the only place information can be provided. I don't normally post here so I didn't ask here. Frankly, I'm surprised no one was providing the proof in the first place and much as "accurate info" is being harped on.

A member on GG asked us privately so I am getting an answer for her on GG, where the question was asked. Nothing more. Nothing less. Obviously, there are multiple members that frequent multiple forums and there's no reason not to ask a question where people feel comfortable doing so. There's also no reason not to share the information. I'm not going to update the legal page on GG without having facts to back it up. It's nothing personal whatsoever. Please don't turn this into something it's not. Alden, thank you for finding that info.

I also haven't asked for proof on the other areas noted because I've either already known about it, have the documentation on it or no one has asked for our help in finding it. It really is that simple. My question was answered. Thank you.

Right. It was. And the question was asked where that information came from.

In the meantime, research by myself and others has found that there is NO indication gliders are illegal in Dallas, and, in fact, the statutes and codes from the City of Dallas indicate they are NOT illegal.

Some time back, a group wanted to plan a get together in Dallas. While working on getting things set up, they were told by city officials that gliders were illegal in Dallas City limits. They either had to relocate the get together outside city limits or cancel.

Now, this was a few years ago and thing may have changed. As gliders are becoming more popular, they (the city) may have decided they fit into the "pocket pet" catagory.

But since gliders are "exotic", they (the city) classifies or classified them as "dangerous prohibited" animals. And since they are still not on the "p o c k e t pets" list, the "city" can still deem them as illegal. It all depend on which city official you are talking to. Or in case of going to court, what judge you happen to get.

The documentation is here. I see nothing that specifically states gliders. However, there is a great deal specified, but in Dallas code, and in Texas code, about dangerous animals. Big cats, alligators, poisonous snakes, etc. Gliders don't seem to fall into that category!

The statute does not mention "exotic" at all. And they are pretty specific about dangerous being the animals that normal, sane people consider dangerous. Not random 6" marsupials!

For MA, I just called the MA Dept. of Animal Health and they said as long as they have a cage / pouch where they can't escape and a letter stating that your suggie(s) are healthy they can come in.

I would call them for more info though.

Massachusetts Department Of Agricultural Resources

All they need is a note from the vet dating 30 days stating they are in good health.

To make sure call the dept. at 617 626-1700

Are we aware of any other cities/counties where gliders are illegal? I am keeping track of the ones mentioned...

The STATE RESTRICTION info link in the locked thread at the beginning of this section needs to be updated. It still lists Georgia as illegal. I suspect other states have changed laws as well.

If the thread is to be kept at the top of the forum - the first place someone would look for information - it should lead to current information.

If it cannot be kept current, perhaps is should not be kept at the top of the forum. It leads new or potentially new owners to be given outdated information at a time when they might not know to search for more current threads.

Information in all of our stickies is meant as a guide. We always welcome updated information from our members and if any member would like to compile a current list of public links and information about State Regulations, we would be happy to edit the sticky. thumb

It is members and staff working together that make GliderCENTRAL such a wonderful resource for everyone. grin

I know this is an old posting but I have a question
The very first post states that PA is an illegal stat but the state restrictions link when clicked on and going to the PA Link it says LEGAL with some buying and selling restrictions.
I used to live in PA, I moved there with my gliders from NY. Found a vet and then heard from some other forum that they were illegal. The vet told me that you cannot buy or sell in the state of PA. But you CAN have them as pets.

So are they LEGAL as PETs
ILLEGAL as far as buy in the state and selling in the state???

you need to have a permit in PA and basically they really do not give out permits so yes they are illegal as a pet to own or buy or sell without a permit. wink

Kristy is correct, this is the state's way of getting around the issue. When asked directly, the state has told many people that they are legal, if you have a state permit to have them. When asked how to go about getting a permit, they say that they are not giving any permits out (they haven't for years). If it is not possible to get a permit to keep them legally, then they are illegal.

Even following the conversation of you have to have a permit to buy or sell. Well if no one has a permit to sell and no one has a permit to buy, then how did you get them as a pet...illegally (according to the state).

It's an unfortunate situation, but one that has been in place for quite a while now. frown

Its legal in the state of nj but you need a permit for them! and some towns won't allow them. but when you register for a permit they just tell you its up to you to find out if your allowed to have them in your town or not.

just NY's two cents here...while sugar gliders are legal in most of the state and Long Island, they are illegal in Manhattan and the surrounding 4 Boroughs of The Bronx, Staten Island, Queens and Brooklyn....collectively this is called New York City.....

Kansas-Legal (illegal in Lawrence KS. Also illegal in Edwardsville KS.)

The reason they are illegal in Lawrence is because it is a college town and there are so many "kids" there that will impulse buy animals and then try to sneak them into the dorms or worse, just set them "free" at the end of the school year. Most of the pet stores in Lawrence also have their birds (such as parrots) priced REALLY high to try to stop some of the impulse buys.

I know for a fact they are also illegal in Omaha NE. There were some gliders confisgated during a raid (dog mill/fighting) and taken to the Omaha humane shelter. I worked with them to get them OUT of Omaha as they are illegal within city limits. I was told by the shelter that if they were unable to relocate them far away from Omaha, they would be euthanized. Thankfully, they felt KS was more than far enough!

As far as I know, gliders are legal to own & sell in all of Michigan with no permit needed.

I found a website with some state and local information for owning exotics (not just gliders). I do not know how often they update their links but it had some good information.

It will not go through is there any other way to contact the state of maine to see how the other person in maine can get a permit, and how would i get one to ship there>?

Thanks

Sorry to bump up an old thread, but permits are not necessary for gliders in Maine. There is a lot of conflicting and outdated information floating around online, but sugar gliders are "unrestricted" in Maine, meaning you can own them without a permit. This is straight from Dept. of Fish & Game's mouth. smile

Agree with Hannah we have also recently contacted them to ask and found out you no longer need permits.
