vhenke11, just as a matter of information, there's a TON of posts and stickys on here about the RIGHT way to introduce gliders. I know I read hours worth of information regarding intros when I brought Gizmo home, because like you, I was told that he did NOT get along with other gliders at all (they had him in a cage by himself away from the other gliders because they said he kept attacking other gliders). So I was in the same boat as you.

A proper introduction process takes at least 30 days for quarantine (with 2 vet visits, one at the beginning and one at the end to determine health) and may even take much longer than 30 days if the gliders need more time to warm up to eachother. Pouch swaps are needed, cage swaps are needed, and then intros need to be done in a neutral area such as a bathtub or a tent free of any glider scent.

To me, it doesn't sound like the woman you got your glider from did that long intro process, which isn't your fault at all. However, it does leave the door open to say that your glider may very well love another companion if intros were done the proper way.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you think we're a pain?

We're NOT trying to pick on you, nit pick the situation, etc. We are all simply here for the good of the glider. This involves, but is not limited to, trying to help others out. That as what we are trying to do here.

I myself am trying to help you figure out the possible errors in past introductions and prevent those same errors from occurring from here on out.

Also, it is always recommended that, regardless of who you get your gliders from and when they last saw a vet, that as soon as YOU get your glider YOU take them to the vet.

Did you know that just because your glider is parasite free doesn't mean s/he will be parasite free 6 months from now!? Gliders can EASILY acquire a parasite from (but not limited to) improperly washed fruits/veggies, undercooked eggs/meats, something on YOUR hands after YOU touched an item in their cage, etc.

This is why you will so often hear others say to bring your gliders in for wellness checks every 6 months to 1 year.

Just like you, gliders need check ups. wink

IF you plan on a male, we all here would suggest to insure he be neutered before you intro. smile

Thanks Megs smile....and I agree, if you don't want baby joeys OR you have no known lineage on the male, you'd need to get him neutered before doing the intro process! smile

You're welcome Jess. smile

vhenke11, PLEASE NEVER take what anybody here says as picking on you. We all are here to help, not be mean. smile
I guess you mean you are medicated for anxiety? I understand. I suffer anxiety and am not medicated at the moment but am working on some sort of help. Anxiety is definitely a terrible thing, so I sympathize with you.

If at all possible, I would suggest getting your glider vet checked immediately (within the next week or so) because it really is important not only for your gliders health, but also the health of yourself and any others who live in or visit your home. smile

I second that, never take anything we say as picking on you, we're all just out for "the good of the glider." If you read the last post I wrote above, you and I actually have something in common with gliders who didn't take kindly to other gliders at this point....

vhenke11, here is a list of vets in FL. I'm a small rescue home. When I get gliders in, almost all of them are sick and not sociable at all. They've come from home where the previous owner knew nothing about their care, just like the glider you got. I've been told how mean, evil and bad, some of these gliders are. Poor things just never got the proper attention.

Myself, I love the whole bonding process. Learning their normal behavior, earning their trust. It's just amazing to me to see the baby steps of progress.

Just as gliders can learn to bond (intro) with us, I believe most can learn to bond with other gliders. It takes time but it's so rewarding to open one pouch and see two suggies snuggling together, who had been alone before.

Gliders are extremely territorial, as are most (if not all) animals. They go by scent, before sight or hearing. The first step to introducing gliders, isn't putting them into a cage and crossing fingers. Because they're so territorial, they will fight, to the death, to protect their property. But if they get used to another gliders' scent, slowly and over time, they start to accept it as an acceptable, normal part of their lives. Switching blankies and pouches, gets each others scents on the gliders, so they eventually think the other glider is part of their colony. Even IF that colony is two gliders. smile

If you'd be interested, we can help you with intros, when you get another glider. There are a lot of little tricks that can be done.

Thank you for listening to us and understanding we just want to help. I promise, no picking is allowed on GC! smile

If you can't afford the office call right now, you can take in fresh pooh and have it tested. That's not very expensive at all. My vet does a SNAP test and it's just $20. Even if your suggie does have parasites, the medicine to treat it isn't expensive either.

Awwwwww! What a cutie! She LOOKS spoiled! LOL!

You bring up a very good point that I don't think has been specifically mentioned before! Yes, if our gliders have parasites, especially giardia, they CAN infect us humans and yes, we would have to be treated! Giardia is especially dangerous! I'm glad I suggested taking her pooh in. Even a non-glider vet can do a SNAP fecal. What diet do you feed? (Can't remember if you said or not) If you feed HPW, be sure to tell your vet that she gets bee pollen because it can be mistaken for a parasite.

You know, if anything, it'll give you peace of mind and boy, that goes a long ways when being a suggie slave! I spent a whole bunch of money on just two gliders late last year, because I wanted certain tests done. They were expensive, dollar wise, but the peace of mind they brought me, was priceless!

Peace of mind certainly does go a long way.

Not only that. But just because YOU 'clearly' don't have giardia doesn't me your glider doesn't. Beyond that, gliders are UBER good at hiding ANY illnesses until they're knocking on death's door.

I agree, if it's Giardia you're concerend about, the fecal would be a good idea...alot of gliders show NO signs of being sick at all until it's too late...I'm glad you're going to get your baby tested....I wish you the very best and please keep us updated about your little one!

P.S. very very cute picture, she looks great!
