Ok, I saw this and was just curious if anyone else had seen a glider that looked like this. They are calling them "pug nose" sugar gliders. I had seen some variations in the gliders originating from different areas. This was the first one I had seen like this and it peaked my curiosity. I am always looking to learn more.

Yes, they come along every now and then but I don't believe it is a trait that can be bred for or that it should be.

I think it would be dangerous to breed for, as there are so many vets that are just now getting experienced with gliders. In dogs, the short-nosed species are more prone to respiratory problems and such, it just sounds risky to me. I wouldn't want to introduce a breed of gliders that are that much harder to diagnose and treat, or purosefully create a line of any animal that is prone to illness.

i think it is adorable. the nose doesnt look like it would cause any kind of breathing problems, but a vet would decide that.
where did you see that? is a breeder selling them? i would like to check further.

It looks too weird for my tastes, like the glider has hydrocephalus or something. I'll take my "regular" gliders, thankyouverymuch!

this is so ironic, i just go two little guys back in july and august and one guy (Pooky) looks like a spitting image of that!! we jokingly call him "special" or pug! because has a pug nose! He makes a sneeze noise alot but vet says he is fine he just has a pug nose.

He is totally cute! I thought it was just our little guy.

hey now he isn't weird hehehe..he just rides the short bus.

I think there can be "special" in all animals. My sister has a bull mastiff dog that is "special". She is pug nosed, deaf, and has the face like a Downs Syndrome human child. They say she rides the short bus too. I agree, I wouldn't breed that into a line. It could def cause medical issues later. All dogs with pug noses that I've heard about have issues smelling and breathing.

i will have to take some pictures of Pooky and post them here. smile His little pug nose is definitely cute. But I agree whole heartedly I wouldn't breed that into gliders at all. His sneezes bother me but they don't seem to bother him or his vet as of yet.

I really think that is why he isn't bonded to me yet. I have had him for 6 months and Nermal for 8 months. Nermal is definitely more bonded to me. Pooky is friendly does not crab but prefers to play by himself. I always told my husband i think it is because he does not smell me like Nermal can, i think that hinders and continues to hinder our bonding process.

but the little guys is still so darn cute

that little guy is precious BUT.... like everyones said, we have to be soooo careful not to breed for things like that. with ANY creature, not just gliders...

There is someone here in Kentucky who has this one and has a baby for sale. The baby doesn't look like the mom. I had just never seen anything like it. I sent them an email last night asking questions about it but haven't received a response yet. I am always looking to learn more on the things that go good with breeding AND the things that go wrong.
I would love to see a picture of Pooky.
I saw a different type of glider (not a sugar glider) that had a face like this. I will have to look and see what it was.

Just to clarify -
I am not looking to use one of these for breeding. It just peaked my curiosity when I saw the picture.

I believe Peggy/srlb has/had a precious little pug nose glider. For the life of me I cannot remember his name (think it was a male).

Pooky is adorable. The pug nose does give him such character. It is cute. Thanx for the pic.

Just so you know, Dasher didnt have any problems with his breathing either.
I wonder if something like this is genetic, or a problem with development in the pouch?

I am wondering the same thing. I wanted to do some research on it but had a death in the family this week. Maybe I will get to check it out next week and see what I find.

Sheila had a little pug-nosed joey. However, he didn't survive. frown He passed away shortly after he was sold(if I remember correctly).

Here's the pics of him that she has on her site: http://www.toandfrogliders.com/FileHiera...oura/Simeon.htm

I think what you're seeing is a genetic abnormality, similar to a cleft pallet.

i would NOT buy one or breed... really if this became main stream you could have babies sufficate at birth or later on.

Dogs, like the french bulldog, when they start having breathing problems have to get an extensive, painful, and expensive surgery. If sugar gliders started to develope this there would be no surgery, just a slow death. I would not risk breeding this little guys just to get this look.

Ive seen a dog sufficate at my vet office becuase of the smoshed face... i dont want sugar gliders have that happen...

But if it happens, its recessive and it happens! Best of luck to any little cute guy like this and hope for no bad respirtory problems in the future!

The smooshed face reminds me of a chipmunk. ._.

I can't say I find it an attractive feature for a glider, seeing as I'm quite fond of my pointy nosed babies... but he is cute. Still reminds me of a chipmunk though. lol
