The laws are always changing, it seems like, and I can hardly keep track! I know for sure they are illegal in Massachusetts.

Some states may be legal, but some towns may be illegal. Take St. Paul in Minnesota, I also think Mnpls was added to this list too. But I am not positive.

Some towns do not allow gliders unless you have a permit. In WI you can not have them in Janesville or Madison unless you have a permit and its hard to get one through them, well that is what I was told.

It is always changing and have no idea why..

I would call the county's police department and or state department to check on everything.

I want to say that no matter what they are illegal and can not go there, even without a permit. My little sister used to live in orange county with her BF. That also was two years ago so things may have changed.

Also if you are just visiting, then I do not see why they wouldnt let you take them.

Just call and check, Good luck with everything!

In California, gliders are illegal. Period. The state says so. Ferrets are also illegal. However. *Some* vets will treat ferrets, and I have to assume a glider as well. It is not something I would risk my gliders' lives on. If found, the state can confiscate and euthanize gliders, or any other illegal animals. Better to find a temporary sitter while you visit family.

That is true.

A few years ago, when living in the Arizona side of the CA\AZ border, I was contacted by a Fish and Game Officer from LA.

He said he had just taken in some gliders. These officers are so busy, that they are supposed to take them in to the vet to have them put to sleep. If they want to find a home for them out of state, they are to do it on their personal time.

He was looking to do that, but told me, most of the other officers just dropped them off at the vet when they took them in.

I sent him to a rescue I knew of and they helped him out.

Bottom line, if you care about the animals, do not bring them into the state of California. Period.

They are illegal in PA and Massachusetts as well. They used to be illegal in the state of Georgia, but you can now have them, only if you purchase them from a USDA breeder.

Some cities also have restrictions. They are illegal in all of Omaha. This is the area the local humane society covers and if you live in these areas, it will mean they are illegal there too. This comes right from the website:

"The Nebraska Humane Society is unique among animal shelters. Not only do we shelter homeless animals, we provide animal control services to several cities in the metropolitan area. Omaha, Bellevue, Gretna, Papillion, La Vista, Ralston, Springfield and unincorporated Sarpy County all contract with us to enforce city ordinances as they relate to animals. Our Animal Control Officers provide public safety services including cruelty/neglect investigations, animal rescue, rabies control and dangerous animal containment."

If you live in any of the areas mentioned, do not own sugar gliders or you will be in city violation. When I contacted them, they told me anything that is non-domesticated, or not native is considered illegal. Sugar gliders are not domesticated and not native to Omaha area.

Also, I know that within the city limits of Sedalia, MO, they are illegal. I believe parts of Utah are illegal for sugar gliders too. In some states, such as Washington, you need to have your vet obtain a permit to get them into the state. I had my vet do this last year when shipping some gliders into Seattle.

If unsure, check with your local Humane Society. They have the list of all the legal and illegal animals in your area.

USDA will only require you to have a license if you own 4 or more breeding females. If you do not breed, or only breed up to 3 females, than they will not issue you a license. However, your state my require a permit, so you really need to start there if you are not breeding.

There was a problem recently with a woman in CA who had inherited her dead sister's animals. Among them were sugar gliders. She had to get them out of the state before they were confinscated.

Do not even take your gliders there on vacation. They have all the power to relieve of them.

Some vets went to schools in other states where they are legal, or some may have worked in other states where they have treated them before. Although it is rare to find one who has experience with them, it isnt impossible. And they wont "report" you. Most care about the animals well being, and they arent breaking any laws treating the animal. Best advice is to just leave them at home. Boarder patrol is increasing on my end into cali, its not worth the risk of getting caught.

Some states, the penalties for vets treating illegal animals are more severe.

In Alaska, it is illegal for vets to treat sugar gliders.

My friend was involved in a rescue last year, to get a family of gliders out.

The woman had brought the gliders in from another state without checking the laws.

She also owned an large dog with a taste for small, furry animals.

She owned an intact male and female. The female had two joeys. One day, she got out of the cage, and before they could stop it, the dog pounced on her and killed her.

She knew then, she couldn't keep them with her dog, so we enlisted my friend to help get them out. They joeys were close enough to weaned, that they survived not having the mother anymore.

Problem was, she needed to get a health certificate to get them out with Delta. When she called the vets, they all refused to allow her to bring them in because they would loose their license for treating them.

When a vet fills out state health certificate, a part goes to the state. They would see this and the vet would be in serious violation. Several other vets were called, and it was the same story. No one would allow the gliders into their office.

So, even if the woman had kept the gliders, if they were sick NO ONE was going to treat them.

I believe, they eventually got them out on Continental, since they do not require a health certificate and they went to their forever home in Missouri. People who have them own a petting zoo and they are loved everyday by many who come to visit.

I am the person that Danielle is talking about .When this lady contacted me from Alaska it was almost impossible to do anything. We couldn't railroad due to they had to go over the Canada border. And than into the usa which means you have to have a vet check up. And than to have them shipped one airline requires the vet certificate so I actually called ten vets in Alaska and not a single vet would see them even to sign a vet certificate. Even tho this lady was trying to do what was right. The vets in some illegal states as mentioned do treat them but they are at risk if caught they can be fined for treating animals that are not allowed in that state. And some states they were legal and became illegal.

Having Faith and Hope that some day soon. That all the world will come to see that all of gods babies deserve love and affection.

Here you go. It's spelled out here by the State of California. Sugar gliders fall under Order Marsupialia (marsupials or pouched
mammals)
All species.---Illegal.
